Summary: I'm sorry, WHERE was the action exactly....?
Review: I guess MY definition of action is a bit different than a few others...if you want action, read Clive Cussler or a James Patterson novel--now THAT is ACTION...however 'The Last Family' did NOT give me what I consider to be action, or even half-decent writing for that matter. I certainly had high hopes considering the praise this novel received on the back of the book and inside front cover...along with the reviews on amazon...however after spending more than 3-weeks and close to 350 pages reading 'The Last Family' I came up short (it normally takes me 2-weeks to read a novel that I normally consider to be slow). One of the main reasons I picked up this book was not just because of the reviews by other folks, but I also found the plot to be interesting and after reading it, I realized it HAD great possibilities, but when a great idea is put in the hands of someone who cannot give it the potential it deserves, the end result (in my opinion) is 'The Last Family'. I do not want anyone to believe that I hated this book, far from it, but I also felt that it just did not reach the level it SHOULD have. For the creative plot alone I would give it 4 stars, but for sheer excitement, a 3 is the best I can do.

Summary: Not a bad debut, Mr. Miller
Review: I liked this book because, even though it was a debut novel, it had that Summer Blockbuster feel to it. Lots of action, a damaged lead character, a particularly sick villian, and a genuinely GOOD storyline. To me, a good novel will keep me up late into the night, grabs my attention (as opposed to politely ASKING for it), and elicits an emotional reaction. Sort of like watching a good movie, I guess. This novel accomplished all three. A nice start Mr. Miller, when can we expect more?

Review: I picked this up after reading the reviews on the back (Larry King and People Magazine should have warned me) and after a great opening was sadly disappointed by ridiculous characters, stupid plotting and bad dialogue. About halfway through I started reading every second sentence, then every second paragraph. It was still too long. Would have been much better if Paul Masterson hadn't had the full force of the DEA/FBI/CIA and (what were they thinking) Tod Peoples behind him. Makes John Grisham look like John LeCarre.

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the John Ramsey Miller thriller, from the very first page. The characters were totally believable. You felt the pain of their loss and their helplessness against the cruel Martin Fletcher. Paul Masterson was a tragic but effective hero.

Review: If you are a fan of action thriller novels you likely will enjoy reading The Last Family. Relatively standard fare here - highly flawed hero leads an elite force to hunt down a super-villain before he can murder one last family. While being very readable, author John Ramsey Miller doesn't offer anything really original (character-wise or dialogue-wise) - nothing that you haven't read before. The plot had real possibilities but sort of falls apart as the supposed super-elusive villain gets caught in a relatively standard manner thus diluting the climatic suspense. Still, if you are looking for a good, quick read The Last Family wouldn't be a bad choice.

Summary: A good read if slightly flawed storytelling
Review: John Ramsey Miller has produced a fine first effort. The evil Martin Fletcher was a captivating character. The story was a page-turner, and except for some slightly flawed elements,the book is a fine example of this genre. Now, to the flaws. The main character, Paul Masterson, was brought out of a retirement funk (physically, mentally and emotionally) too quickly. More time could have been devoted to Paul's recuperation. Also, some of the peripheral characters were hard to believe (Tod Peoples). Finally, the security used to protect the "last family" was, at times, laughable. Ten ardent fans of any television crime series could have made better plans. Having said this, I feel as if I am being too hard on Mr. Miller. These flaws are minor and do not take too much away from a fine first effort.

Summary: Well... all right as a diversion.
Review: Let's say Stephen Hunter's next novel isn't due for a few months,
and you've outgrown Tom Clancy and Morrell's tired rehashing
has made you yearn for a little diversion. So pick this up and be diverted. You won't be really satisfied,
but you won't feel as if you've read this before until about
halfway through. I'd like to see something else by the author,
hopefully with this criticism stinging him whilst he writes.
