Rating: Summary: Good Reading Review: I have read all of Mr.Dickey's books this is the only one I have just read. He has a masterful way of writing. It's almost as if your watching a good movie where the suspense just keeps building and when you get to the punchline you are not disappointed. Many of the reviews written for this book are not favorable. I thought the erotica in this book was well written why because it showed LOVE in these scenes. I did not get turned off and I am heterosexual. It's all about knowing and I mean knowing who you are anyway before I go off on a tangent my hat is off to you Mr.Dickey. YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN GO HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Not very believable. Review: I found myself frustrated while reading this book. It took me a little longer than usual to finish this book because I got tired of it. I don't konw whether or not it is unrealistic, but I had a hard time believing the strong feeling held by the characters. Therefore I thought that the things that they put themselves through was ridiculous. I've liked all of the other EJD books except this one.
Rating: Summary: GREAT Review: IT WAS GREAT TO READ AND I LOVED THE ENDING IT WASN'T A STUPID ENDING THAT'S WHAT I LOVED ABOUT IT. READ.
Rating: Summary: This could really happen... Review: Although some may feel that the storyline of Between Lovers is a little off the beaten path but I think it could really happen. I feel the problem that a lot of us may have is that Nicole is torn between a homosexual and heterosexual relationship and one of her lovers that putting up with her childish ways is a man. However, if we flip the script and had a guy that could not decide which woman he wanted to be with and two women were competing for his love we could totally believe the story. I really like the book and would recommmed it. I did realize early in the book that the main character did not have a name but thought in the end EJD would reveil it as a character from a previous book. I don't think we heard the last of this nameless man. I expect him to show up somewhere down the line in a future book because EJD does that sometimes. Remember Toyomi is from Cheaters.
Rating: Summary: This book would make a great movie! Review: This is the first book I've ready by Dickey and I picked it up because everyone talks about him so much. At first I was slightly turned off because he uses such detailed, artsy descriptive language and the story moves at a leisurely pace. I was waiting for the drama to just jump up and smack me in the face. But within a few chapters I was getting drawn in... in the end I was talking about the characters in this book like they were real people. The topic of this book is a bisexual/heterosexual love triangle and in the process of reading the book I went from thinking that the characters were all freaks to actually feeling some type of empathy for them. It was quite a strange feeling, but that's why I think it would make a great movie. It's so scandalous, but not fake. I could see something like this happening to real people, that's what made it so wonderful. I like Dickey's style. I'll definitely be picking up some of his other books. Just be ready for a book that really makes you think.
Rating: Summary: ok, but not his best Review: I've realized that the older i get i read books less because of plot and more because of the author. it's like i developed a small fan base of authors. Eric jerome dickey was definitely on mine when i read "cheaters" and "milk in my coffee", so i picked up "between lovers" without even reading the inside cover on the story. i just expected it to be good. as much as i hate to say this, dickey magic wriing quality didn't quite do it for me in this one. it was ok, but not the best example of his writing. The story is about a nameless protagonist who have been involved with Nicole for the past seven years. she broke off an engagement to figure out a certain part of herself- her latent desire for women, that is. so she moves up to oakland and becomes involved with the fierce and attractive Ayanna. The protagonist and Ayanna are involved with Nicole at the same time, hence compete fiercley for her love. Then a tragic event happens, speeches are made and the protagnoist moves on with his life. More or less, that's how the story goes, with a few plots. my main problems were with the characters. in dickey's other novels, the characters are examined and their personality shines. "between lovers" seemed to be motivated by the plot. for starters, i had a problem with that protagonist. from other clues in the book, i'm guessing that he's educated, cultured but when it comes to open mindedness he fails completely. For example, when he explains what he has over Ayanna he says, "Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve." That phrase i thought was completely off. If he was as educated as the book suggested, he wouldn't simply throw it in her face that she can't give Nicole a baby. Didn't the thought ever cross his mind that maybe Nicole didn't want a baby? Nor is he really religious. To me that sounded like something a person with skewed views would say. I didn't like that. The other charcter that I didn't get was Nicole. For one, I didn't understand why both were so valiant in competing for her affections. Her character is pretty shallow and doesn't have any real emergence as a person. Insteand, she sort of flows in between the Protagonist's love and Ayanna's sweetheart, like a possesssion. There aren't any big moments she has that make her stand as one person, instead the other half of the couple. And her attempt to carry on a relationship with both simultaneously seemed to an act of selfishness and control instead the emotional uncertainty that one would experience when loving two people. The reason why i think her request seemed so selfish was because her character was allowed no real development. The other part of the story that i had a problem with is that use of Ayanna. Out of all of the characters she was my favorite. She had drive and desire although her love for Nicole seemed to be more of an attempt for possession of an object than to have a partner. In a lot stories certain characteristics are changed to add spice to plot and to highlight a point. For example, Ibsen did it in "A Doll House" by letting Nora be that protagonist. It highlighted her problem more because she is not a majority in her society. I have a feeling that Dickey meant to use Ayanna in that way, because even in our day and age a homosexual romance is difficult to understand. He used an interesting method by including a woman to highlight the protagonist's confusion and loss, but he fell into a trap that most people do when they protray homosexuality from a mainstream perspective. Most of the interaction between the characters is sexually. I didn't see any emotional connection. I think it may make a lot of people in the LGBT community upset, because he used a stereotype as a reserve. The charactes seemed to move through the plot instead of breaking from it. There was still some of Dickey's trademark writing. The conversations between Ayanna and the protagonist is probably my favorite moment. This novel is a good example of "porn without the porn", so to speak. But the overall, i felt numb after reading this. it didn't do anything for me. i'll just accept it as a small glitch in Dickey's career. i still would recommend him as a good read- but not this book.
Rating: Summary: All Bisexuals Aren't Bad Review: Between Lovers is the story of an unnamed character who is madly in love with Nicole, the "love of his life" who just happens to be bisexual. He spends the story attempting to win Nicole's affections from her lover, a tough talking attorney who isn't taking no for an answer. I applaud Dickey for trying a plot that hasn't been done before in mainstream African-American fiction. However, the plot was, at times, a little unbelievable. I found it a bit annoying for a man to keep holding on to a woman who was so clearly selfish and unsure of whom she wanted. At one point, I was rooting for him to win Nicole's heart, and by the next few chapters, I was hoping he would just let her go. This novel also does not improve society's misunderstood perception of the bisexual lifestyle. People tend to think bis spend their days (and nights!) jumping between both sexes, but there are a great deal more who can settle down and commit to one person, no matter what the gender. But EJD's writing is, as always, superb and he always offers enough twists and turns to keep me hanging on to his every word. I did enjoy Between Lovers for its originality. Keep writing, EJD!
Rating: Summary: GO GRAB -----> "Between Lovers" Review: What happens when the one single person you most truly love and admire falls in love with someone else.. But still loves you? Would you compromise? BETWEEN LOVERS capitalizes on the fact that we as humans need to be satisfied in ways that sometimes one person can't always do. There are moments where we grow from certain experiences, and although many may see those changes as rebellious or sinful, we are, in fact, simply discovering ourselves. Just when you think that compromising in a twisted love triangle would do the trick, it doesn't. Or does it? Will family and/or society influence their bizarre behaviors on what step they'll take next? Or will it be another twisted ending, leaving you [asking] for more? Find out by reading "BETWEEN LOVERS." Trust me, its definitely a 10.
Rating: Summary: getting to the point Review: I think that it was a great book because the way the guy in the book had so much love for his wife. I do truely believe that Nicole was being somewhat selfish she wanted her cake and eat it to. The way Eric Jerome Dickey expressed every part of the book it was like watching a movie receiving every detail there was. It was a great book and I will read it again and again. Keep up the work!!
Rating: Summary: Pleasantly Surprised Review: I was sooo surprised with Dickey's poetic style. The story he was able to weave around these characters was laced with imagery, metaphors and wonderful descriptions. I had been reluctant to read his work before, but will definitely read another. He immediately pulled me into this story and took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as these three main characters tried to unravel their complicated relationships. Try him and you'll see for yourself.
