Rating: Summary: Excellent Reading Review: Eric, I just finished Between Lovers yesterday and I have to say that it's the best novel that you have written since Friends and Lovers. That was the first book of yours that I read several years ago and I have been reading every book since. You are an excellent writer and The content of your writing is extraordinary!! I've enjoyed all of your books but I have to admit that Between Lovers and Friends and Lovers both made me break down crying. The story lines in both of these books had me totally engrossed in the characters and the things that happened to those characters. I could totally relate to the feeling of being so deeply in love with a woman to the point that you will accept just about anything from her. It can be unhealthy at times but in your heart you keep on hoping that things will change. Good luck in your future endeavors and I'm already looking forward to the next book!!
Rating: Summary: I want my money back Review: I have all of Eric's books in Hard Cover. I support my AA authors, because that's how I do things. My mind is open, my heart is open and I appreciate new ideas, new concepts and respect authors for traveling the road not taken. This book was terrible, though. I didn't go so far as to throw it across the room when I finished it, but if I had known then what I know now, I wouldn't have spent my [price] on a new pair of shoes. Liar's Game was bad enough, but when you think "he can't get any worse" here comes Between Lovers. I guess my issue revolves around my inability to identify with the characters. I didn't love to hate anyone - I just didn't like 'em. None of 'em. Not Rev. We Shall Overcome, not Mrs. Bible, not wishy washy Nicole, not combative Ayanna and not the weak and nameless main character. I didn't notice any character developement in this book at all. I also agree with the reader who called the book preachy and moralistic. If I want that, I'll pick up my Bible. As far as I'm concerned, EJD has two strikes. He needs to redeem himself with a quickness, or I'll end up with a few new pairs of shoes!
Rating: Summary: EJD HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: AFTER READING ALL OF EJD'S PREVIOUS BOOKS, IT WAS A GIVIN' THAT I WOULD ALSO PURCHASE THIS ONE. I HAVE LOVED HIS WRITING SINCE I FIRST READ "MILK IN MY COFFEE". WHICH HAD ME JONESIN' FOR MORE. AFTER READING ALL OF HIS BOOKS, I WAS ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THIS WOULD BE THE ONE TO DISAPPOINT...........BOY!!! WAS I WRONG. THERE'S PROBABLY A LITTLE SUMPIN'SUMPIN' THAT EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO IN THIS BOOK. WHETHER IT'S BEING DAMN NEAR OBSESSED WITH SOMEONE TO HAVING A STRAINED RELATIONSHIP WITH A PARENT, IT'S ALL THERE FOR THE READING. IF I WASN'T A TRUE FAN BEFORE (AND TRUST, I WAS), I AM NOW "FO SHO". THE ONLY QUESTION THIS BOOKS LEAVES YOU WITH (OR MAYBE JUST MINE), IS WHETHER THIS BOOK IS ABOUT EJD HIMSELF OR NOT??? I MEAN, WHAT'S UP WITH THE MAIN CHARACTERS NAME??????? DID I MISS SOMETHING OR WHAT. HE WAS REFERRED TO AS "I", "SWEETIE", "BOO", "THAT'S HIM", "IT'S YOU" ETC. BUT I DON'T REMEMBER EVER HAVING HEARD HIS NAME.............HELP A SISTA OUT!!!!! YES! I AM A NOISY LITTLE SOMTHIN'!
Rating: Summary: Missing Something.... Review: I was very disappointed with this book. The narrator was smart but yet so stupid. It was easy for him to see that Nicole had this love for Ayanna but he could not see that this was not a healthy relationship. Nicole needed counseling. She couldn't even accept the fact that she was gay. Everything the subject came up she blamed on Paris. And the scene with the mother... GIVE ME A BREAK and some reality. I didn't have a problem with the sex scene (I have seen and read worst), I did have a problem with the fact that Nicole had this power over two people and I can't see why. In my eyes, she was waek. She was so eager to explore this other side but she couldn't handle all that went with it. This book was poor and a waste of my time and money. I finished in a day and a half. I have to admit that I couldn't wait to get to the end. I hate to start a book and not finish it and I wanted to end this madness. Maybe in the next book, we will find the EJD that wrote "Cheaters".
Rating: Summary: KUDOS!!!!! Review: My boy has done it again!!!! As we black Baptist say down south Ohhhh Laaawwwd!!! But seriously, this book was wonderful and I thought "Liar's Game" was a page turner last year I can't believe this!! The characters were so clear and their feelings were so vivid. Nicole was a sweetheart she had a big heart and was torn between her two lovers, as most big-hearted people would be, but I knew which was way her wind was blowing (Ayanna). But she tried to hold on to what others wanted from her and expected and she needed the blessings of her mother so bad that she was willing to come back to our "mysterious author and main-character". I believe if she could have had them both she would have, but just like real life when you don't make a decision the forces that be (God, by way of others) will make them for you. And by page 312 I could not hardly finish for the tears in my eyes. So thank you EJD for evoking emotion in your readers once again. Peace and Blessings
Rating: Summary: Too Much Love! Review: This book started a little slow for me but by the time I was 3/4 th done, I asked myself three questions. Was the story good? Yes; Did the characters evoke feelings? YES; And did the characters show growth? Yes. This story was told by a nameless, sensitive man, who loved his woman, almost to a fault. Nicole stood at her wedding ceremony, trying to respond to the Minister's question. Finally, she asked her groom if she could speak with him in private; she explained that she was having second thoughts and needed some time. Reluctantly, he agreed and the wedding was called off. After the smoke clears, Nicole tells him she also loves someone else, but will he stay with her? He answers yes. She tells him the "someone else" is a woman but, will he stay with her? He answers yes. Several months later as he and Nicole lay in bed she tells him she wants him to meet Ayanna, will he? He answers maybe? After he meets Ayanna; yeah he said yes; Nicole asks him if he will share a bed with her and Ayanna? Ok, see the pattern and you know what his answer was, ummm hmmm. The problem is Nicole had rules, she was the only one who would share the both of them, no crossing the line between him and Ayanna. At one point I wondered if she could ask a question that he COULD refuse? However, when HE and Ayanna asks Nicole if they could all share the bed and make it a three way coupling, Nicole's answer was a resounding NO! Was she selfish or was she afraid? And will he stay? The families offered little support for the decisions they made and the life styles they chose to live. And that added to the drama as they all struggled to make decisions that would change the rest of their lives. Dickey has penned one of the most thought provoking, controversial stories I have read in a good while. It really stretched the imagination, but it was a story with a too real feel to it. You will hear this one reverberating off the wall for quite a while.
Rating: Summary: Not the Eric I'm used to Review: Well I must say that I am a EJD fan and while I loved "Friends and Lovers", and also "Sister Sister". I don't think this "Bewteen Lovers" is going to make it to the top of my EJD list of favorites. A lot of people are complaining about the sex scenes and they were my favorite part of the book. I didn't fancy the no name book writer to the point where I wanted him to get the girl because I found him to be very weak and a push over. Nicole not only wanted to have her cake and eat it too she also wanted the milk to wash it down with! She was a selfish person and the scene with her and her mom was so unrealistic I just wanted to slap all of the characters. All in all the book will get you through a boring day at work (like it did me), but if your expecting what you already know from EJD it just isn't there.....
Rating: Summary: Between Lovers Review: This is so different from his other books. For those who have not read anything from Eric Dickey, I'm sure this book will make you a fan. For all his old fans, this should keep you going till the next one drops. The subjuct matter has not been done before with modern African Americans. This has been such a big taboo with our people for years. Read it, sit back and enjoy. If this is the only book you have read by Eric, then you must also go out and get "Milk in my Coffee." I know alot of sistas read it, but the brothas seem to enjoy it a lil more. Peace !!!
Rating: Summary: Just Okay Review: I was so excited that EJD had a new book out. I have totally enjoyed his previous books. To keep it short, this was my least favorite of his books. The characters and the storyline were cool, it's just that I wasn't feeling the way he was wording things. I got kind of bored but I won't put EJD down, I'll be waiting for his next book.
Rating: Summary: Just o.k. - got better towards the end Review: Well, I HATED this book at first, then it kind of grew on me. I mean, I just wanted the whole sex thing to happen and be done with it. It seemed to drag on and on and on. This book was definitely not one of his best.
