Review: This is really the best book I have ever read..the way Suskind describes it is really really great!!!!

Summary: Thank you Suskind!
Review: I will forever be in debt to the college professor who put this text on the reading list. A book that makes you think is one truly worth reading. It's changed my perception of the world by adding another dimension to it; perhaps a more sensual dimension.

Summary: An ode to smell
Review: In this world of visual images, it is good to realize every once in a while that we, human beings, are more than just our looks. Unlike most reviewers, I found Grenouille a real hero. There are not many people in this world who can stick to what they want for a lifetime and finally get it. Once you have read the first two pages, you won't put it down till you've read the last. The olfactory description of 17th Century Paris is awesome, you can actually smell it (and get sick). My advice: Read Perfume and become smell-conscious.

Summary: Unforgettable
Review: Consuming book that doesn't completely strike you until weeks later. Our book discussion group was completely divided over it with one person saying it was the most vile thing she had ever read, others admiring its unusual, eye-opening approach and some quite moved by the stark and startling images presented.

Summary: A beautiful horror story
Review: A beautiful story of horror in an enthralling setting (17th century France). Very well written, very original, and shocking without the gore. Suskind's style is similar to Anne Rice in that he writes as if he has lived in the country AND in the period of the setting.

Many scenes show a blatant disregard for commercialism and would seem to push the book beyond the mass-market spectrum. The fact that the book has become a bestseller, beside this point, is an affirmation of Suskind's extraordinary talents as a writer. (Oh yea, If I read one more pun concerning how ex-smell-ent this book is I'm going to puke!!!!)

Summary: An olfactory journey that you wish never had to end.....
Review: Completely dynamic and complex, and truly original, complete with historical brilliance, edge-of-your-seat evolution of scene, and a protagonist (or antagonist in this case, because you want to like Grenouille, but you just can't bring yourself to do anything but hate him intensely) who has no interest in the world that exists outside of his own sense of smell. A brilliant and disturbing novel that takes you in every direction and spits you out at the end.

My favorite part, the cave scene. Just imagining the state of mind Grenouille must have been in caused me to close my eyes and just imagine a world with only scent and without light. The author could not have chosen a more perfect setting for this novel than France.

Summary: Perfume: the scent of a woman
Review: Perfume is intoxicating! Patrick Suskind has excelled once again and has written the masterpiece of his collection. Perfume is a hypnotic and extraordinary story, oozing with bizzare characters and behaviours. For readers who want to experience something different in literature, this book is for you. Suskind is a master of the mind, the master of written words, and the master of emotion. His descriptions elicit images that are difficult to forget. When this Perfume gets on your skin, it's a smell you will never forget. Not for the faint-hearted.
