Summary: Strange, Strange and More Strange
Review: I must say that I am intrigued by the concept of this book. The book reminds me of several of the bizarre books I read in French lit class in school, and a bit of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, as the style and society outcast thing is similar. I would recommend the book for a rainy day, although I wasn't mesmerized, I was intrigued (and I did find myself noticing smells more). However, I can't understand why everyone else was raving so much about the book.

Summary: A nose is a nose is a nose?
Review: After reading this morbid yet absolutely fascinating book - nothing smelt the same. In fact everything smelt more and I'm sure I was smelling things I couldn't even smell!

Summary: Astounding
Review: Of the thousands of books I have read,,,,this "Perfume" is beyond them all. A Classic.

Summary: This book smells: absolutely unromantic.
Review: When I first read this book, on foot of a review by John Banville in the Irish Times, I loathed the essence of it - the nihilistic character Jean Baptise, the reduction of women to raw aromas, 18th French society masquerading as the epicentre of culture and manners. This book smells; utterly anti-romantic, I thought. But why do I keep on reading it, year in, year out? Why have I banned the use of perfume in the family home? Yet I still am reading "Perfume". It's an incredible work. DO READ IT!

Summary: The most extraordinary story ever told.
Review: Patrick Suskind writes beautifully; this is the best book ever written. Do yourself a favour, read it!

Summary: unique, but not enjoyable
Review: The sense of smell is a deserving subject. For a lighter and more clever take on it, try Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. Perfume plods along; much effort is wasted trying to garner sympathy for a completely flat character. As a female reader, I find it a bit annoying that the women who smell the best also happen to be incredibly beautiful.

Summary: Excellent, couldn't put it down.
Review: I read this book in English about 10 years ago and loved it. I read it again 2 years ago because I couldn't remember the storyline exactly and this time I read it in French. I loved and appreciated it even more the second time around.

Summary: Wonderfully disgusting - UNPUTDOWNABLE!
Review: A book that totally lives up to it`s reputation! This is an unusual story about a man who is surrounded by filth and disgust - but still he is capable of creating the most wonderful scents the world has ever smelled. It`s a story of contrasts - beauty meats murder in an amazing mix.

Patrick suskind`s writing is pure hedonism from start to finish - a book so mesmerising it is impossible to put down! What amazed me the most, is that "Perfume" is unlike any other book I have ever read: the environment, the main character, Jean Baptiste, and the plot - all very original. READ IT AND ENJOY

Summary: c'est formidable. It's a SCENTsational book
Review: I first picked up this book in french a few years ago, and have bought the english version and given out as gifts ever since. It pretty much captures the essence of what the author describes but I think the french version is more romantic because it fits the cheap "roman policier" genre and yet accomplishes the "philosophique" aspect. And after reading it, you've got to run out and buy the eau de cologne you used when you were a teenager, come home and douse yourself with it and all those sweet memories will come back to haunt you...

Summary: C'est moi Jean Baptiste...
Review: Wow! This book is amazing! It's brutal and tender at the same tame, it's fast but full of details that will amaze you. This is the best murderer I've ever read about! Jean Baptiste is superb!Suskind is the European Garcia Marquez!
