Summary: SMELL as metaphor for the SELF
Review: Perfume was a beautifully written book about an unusual man with an extraordinary sense of smell...but that wasn't all. Suskind gives some insight into the nature of humanity through scent. Are we born with a self or do we make it as we go along in life? Does Grenouille seek to find mere scents, or does he look for something more important? This is definitely a book for readers who seek the underlying meaning of the text, and hope to find different perspectives on the deeper meaning of life itself! Don't just read this book, engross yourself in it and read between the lines. If you do this, I promise you, this book will have all the profundity of Nieztche, or Hume.

Summary: Your olfactory sense will definitely get a jolt out of this!
Review: Just read the first few pages and you'll know what I mean. Although it isn't as scary as it could've been, it was disturbing in most parts. However, I was more fascinated by Suskind's ability to describe the different kinds of odor in this novel based mostly on the main character's sense of smell. I felt as though I was there - "smelling all the smells".

Somewhere I read that it was Kurt Cobain's favorite novel and the inspiration for the lyrics to "Scentless Apprentice" (In Utero). I can see why.

Summary: Fascinating and Superb!!!!
Review: If you only read one book every 15 years, make this one it... I have given this book to many people and I just love it. Weird, intense, unique, different, a classic.

Summary: Too much explanations
Review: I have to admit I loved the book and the style it used. The idea of a scent as a basis of human popularity and influence was extremely fresh and unexpected. However, the compelling desire of the author's to explain to us every twist of his thought and imagination came as a major distraction. Every ingenious turn of the plot was destroyed by the explanation following right after. Why would he venture for such an unusual approach to the subject if he did not trust the sense and the intellect of the audience? I felt almost insulted in that regard...

Summary: A HORROR BOOK WITHOUT THE HORROR
Review: Perfume was an okay book, i don't see what the fuss is about. sure suskind sets teh scene brilliantly and the characters you can relate to, but other than that, it wasn't a book i could get into. There seemed no point in going around trying to distinguish smells.

Summary: All sizzle, no steak.
Review: I expected more of this book. It is long on flowery prose and short on dramatic action. It is also more than a little implausible. This book was written for those who find Anne Rice too tough on the stomache.

Summary: intoxicating!
Review: When I first read this book, I couldn't stop. When I finished it, I was empty. I couldn't read anything else. But, then, I found out some of the references Suskind himself used for this book. Thanks to him, I discovered Master & Marguerita, from russian author Boulghakov. One should put warning on these books: addictive! Once you start them, forget about everything else. Don't expect to sleep untill there are over.

Summary: Creative examination of scents; but this is a one song band
Review: Most of the book is a brilliant insight into smell...an altogether ignored "sense" in most of literature. Because of this, you must give it stars for creativity, originality, and solid development of this (one) idea. However, something fundamental is missing...we fail to connect with the lead character...he is faceless. It ranks in my top 100, but certainly not my top 50. That being said, I enjoyed it.

Summary: It made me want to cut my nose off!!
Review: This book took me to a different time. I could not put it down . The way that Patrick suskind wrote this book made me feel so many different emotions for Jean Baptist. Absolutely one of my all time favourites.

Summary: Murder written by a philosopher
Review: Thanks to PATRICK Süskind, a german philosopher, I had the oportunity to read a different thriller, unique in its genre: a perfume maker in Paris XVIII century looking for the ultimate fragrance. HIGHLY recommendable!!!.
