Rating: Summary: All of a kind family Review: I am 10 years old and I really enjoyed this book because, it tells you what life was like for poor peeople at the turn of the last century. I think this book is better for girls than for boys as baby Charlie only comes in at the end. I think it could be better if Ella got into trouble like the rest of the girls. I am glad that a boy gets born at last because it makes a change from girls and it would probably make Gertie feel better to still be the youngest girl, though not the youngest over all. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to anyone over the age of seven. I would give this book 9/10.
Rating: Summary: wonderful-est Review: I read this book when I was a little girl--I had gotten it from an aunt along with a lot of other books. But it really stood out. I'm not Jewish, but I am Christian, and it gave me a great background into the roots of my faith. Little did I know that, twelve years later, I'd be working in a shul of my own! All of a Kind Family helped me do my job by giving me background into the HolyDays and traditions. It is a must read for every little girl!
Rating: Summary: This book made me want high-button shoes more than anything. Review: I have known about All of a Kind Family since I was in the second grade. I am Jewish and could relate to the characters in some of what they did, but it was still quite new to me. I remember asking my mother why the women had to sit in a separate place in the synagogue, why the doctor didn't just give the girls an antibiotic when they got sick, why, why, why. My grandfather (who would have been Gertie's age at the beginning of the book) explained a lot of it too. It is a great book to introduce children of all religions to a Jewish family from 1912. The book is very sweet. There are conflicts, but nothing too harsh. Therefore it is fine to read this book to young children. It is kind of "Walton"-ish, as other readers have said. What's wrong with that? The one thing I do not fully understand is that, over the course of the series, Ella doesn't get into trouble. Henny always does, and Sarah, Charlotte, Gertie and Charlie have their share, but Ella seems to be Miss Perfect. Perhaps that is how Sydney Taylor remembered her eldest sister. All in all, this is a wonderful book, for girls and boys alike (though boys may not be interested because Charlie comes along at the end). One reviewer mentioned what a large role food plays in their lives. How about an "All-of-a-Kind-Family Cookbook" (made health-conscious)?
Rating: Summary: Great historical children's series of books Review: Some of my favorite childhood memories are of going to my hometown library & I always checked out the 'All-Of-A-Kind Family' books. I loved & enjoyed the entire series! When I started working at my first bookstore, I finally bought the series for myself. I think it's a great series because it can be so different than a typical kids' life. I grew up in a Catholic family of six in a small, Midwestern town & where our relatives all lived out of state. This became such an interesting & different perspective of families & family life. The era was after the turn of the century New York City. The family was Jewish, poor & with five girls, but had a rich heritage & connection with the neighborhood & the extended relatives & friends all living nearby. It gives a great view of how life in a different era can seem very similar, but also so different from our current life. Each book is set up easily with each chapter devoted to a new problem or predicament concerning one of the girls. The five daughters throughout the series cover every age, so girls of all ages can & will identify with any of them at different times. All in all, a great series of books for girls, but boys might also enjoy these stories too!
Rating: Summary: All-of-a-Kind Family Series- my childhood favorite! Review: I was so thrilled to log onto Amazon and find 31 fabulous customer reviews of these books. I have a 18 month old son, and a friend of mine asked what books I plan to read to him. We spoke of Willy Wonka, and Little Women, and other books we both enjoyed as little girls. Then something flashed in my brain and I remembered these books. I remember they were written by a woman Sydney something, and about an NY immigrant Jewish family in the early part of the 20th Century...well, I just knew I'd find a enclave of lovers of this series here!I grew up in a fairly active cultural Jewish household in Milwaukee, WI but remember wanting so much to be more ritualistic and observant after reading these books. They really do depict a wonderful setting for Jewish practice, and what really astounds me are the reviews written here from non-Jewish readers, and how much the books impacted their understanding and appreciation for Jewish culture and rituals. I am so pleased to see that All-of-a-Kind Family is available to order here... I plan to order very soon. I do hope, however, that the sequels become available. These books are really a national treasure that have opened the world's eyes to what it means to assimilate into a new culture while trying to find a context to continue one's own culture and practices...a lesson still being learned today by so many immigrants who arrive in the U.S. each day.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite childhood books--a classic! Review: A warm, wonderful book that deserves a place on the children's classics shelf next to Little Women and Anne of Green Gables. When I was a child I used check out "All-of-a-Kind Family" and the sequels from the library over and over again. The books taught me things about the Jewish faith and culture that I probably would not have learned elsewhere. Not only are the details about Jewish customs interesting, but the stories, characters and early 20th century settings are fascinating. My favorite character was Henny, because she was always getting herself into messes.
Rating: Summary: Childhood Favorite Review: I just completed rereading the All of a Kind Family books this past week. They were initially read to me by my father before I was able to read, then I read them to myself once I was able to and now at 28 years old read them again and enjoyed them as much if not more! These are wonderful classics that are up there with Little Women and The Little House on the Prarie books I also love. No one is too old or young to enjoy All of a Kind Family! I just wish there were more than the 5 I have! I just logged on hoping to see that there was after finishing Ella of All of a Kind Family but it looks like that is the final book. Don't miss out, READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: great Review: I read every single one of these books over and over as a child, and I would have to put them up there with Alice in Wonderland as all-time classics!
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I am 11 years old and I really enjoyed this book. It showed me how life was in the past. I'd love it if the price of candy was what it was then. One penny for two bags! I think this was a very good chapter book for children to read. But I did have to ask my mother what some of the words meant.
Rating: Summary: One of the most wonderful books I have ever read. Review: I first read this as a child, growing up in the south in a pentacostal holiness church. This book was my very first introduction to the Jewish Faith, what it means and how it impacted day-to-day life. I found that this family was a very loving family who encouraged their girls (then baby boy) to learn and to grow up strong. I remember wanting to be Jewish so that I could be a member of their family. There was so much fun and love. Well, I have since learned about the "Jewish" stereotype. However, I was not suckered in by the error because my first experience with Jews came about through the All of A Kind Family books. I am convinced that I knew the truth about the Jewish people because of these books. I strongly recommend that these books be added to all reading lists, as they help to teach kindness, love, and tolerance for all people, just like they helped to teach to me.
