Rating: Summary: Timeless Review: I read this series as a child. Now my daughter is reading it. A gentle, delightful, and timeless series. My only problem with it is that it a definitely sanitized picture of life on the lower East Side. The family seemed to be entirely too well-off considering that Papa worked as a junk dealer. (They ate well, dressed well, lived in a large, well-furnished flat, vacationed at the seashore, never seemed to worry about doctor bills when the kids got sick, and the kids got plenty of pocket money. (A penny a day went a long way back then!) In real life, a family in such circumsntances would have had to take in borders, send Mama and Ella to work in the factory, and struggle to just make ends meet. Still, if you can remember that it is 100% fiction, this book (and indeed, the whole series) make a great read.
Rating: Summary: BEST... Review: I have known these children forever, and though I agree with MOST of the article, that reviewer with the neice , I Thought, this book, the ...she talked about, it just is NOT ONE BIT THE SAME! I have known these girls forever, and now thatI havea review to write i willsay that although i rspect this person, it is wrong. It is abbout 5 girls, but if you're a boy, you'lllike Henny, and Ialso ask you to read the others. The other girls are, Ella the singer, Sarah the sweet, Charlotte, the storyteller, and Gertie the perfect little one, who have the most delicious treats and magic adventures. I am a Brooklyn jew, and understand it, anyone who doesn't will learn and love. I told you that the other ones are the more for boys, if the boy is younger, it is still perfect. if you'rea drawer or crafts personm, this and the others R4U! Other books r, Bridge to Terabithia, Tuck everlasting, the others, and Hundred Dresses. Don't stop, faithful readers! Heep this book 4-ever!
Rating: Summary: An amazing book! Review: The charecters are wonderful, the girls act like real children do! The book is such a wonderful story even though I'm not Jewish, I enjoyed learning about their holidays.
Rating: Summary: simple and magical Review: This book was first read to me when I was seven, I then read it again and again. This book is heartfelt and full of good family values. It is especially enjoyable for girls because of the many daughters and the little touch of romance! Raised catholic, I was facsinated with the jewish traditions described in this book. This is a simple book, with a realistic plot and endearing characters. The only down-side is it is a little outdated.
Rating: Summary: childhood favorite Review: I can't begin to tell you how happy I was to find this book while browsing in a childrens bookstore in Manhattan. The ALL OF A KIND FAMILY series was one of my childhood favorites and I would borrow it from the library again and again. It educated me in the customs of judaism which was very interesting to a hispanic, catholic girl growing up in the subarbs of Long Island in the late 70's. I was able to relate to the stories about an ethnic family who supported one another and helped each other out. Also the characters and stories were so lively and vivid. You got a true sense of what it was like to live at the turn of the century. I'm very pleased to see that has the entire series for sale. I hope that my children will enjoy the books as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: A 35 Year Favorite Review: I first read the All of A Kind Family book when I was in elementary school. I never had a copy of my own, so I checked it out as often as I could, and I never told any of my friends about the book so I could keep it all to myself!! Over the years I've thought about the stories and the books and how much I LOVED them and wanted to be part of their family, even though I came from a big family myself. I am going to buy these books for my son to read, because I think he would really enjoy them, too. And if not, at least I'll have them all to myself!!!
Rating: Summary: Never Judge A Book By It's Cover Review: When I first got this book, I didn't think it would be that great! The title sounded weird and the picture didn't grab my attention! Then I started to read it. I love this book! I think any girl would like this book! The story is about this family with five girls! They are all different ages, although they all play together. This book takes place in the early 1900's. When you first begin to read this book, you have to adjust your mind to that time period, because some things may seem different than life today like how they get a penny for allowance, and how they can buy a cup & saucer for 35 cents! Every chapter is a different adventure! I can't put the book down! I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Rating: Summary: All of a Kind Family Review: All of a Kind Family was one of the best books that I read in fourth grade. This delightful, heartwarming story takes place in old New York where the musty streets are always crowded, but are always filled with friendly people. The book is about a sweet family of seven, in which each person is different, though in a way, the same. The five children, (all sisters) names' are Gertie, who is a lovable four-year -old, Charlotte, Gertie's closest friend, and a quiet daydreamer, at six years of age, Sara, the polite, sweet little girl of eight years, Henny, the wild, secretive one of the bunch at ten years of age, and finally Ella, the thoughtless girl that all of her sisters look up to. In this interesting, tremendously descriptive book, each child overcomes a problem, and there are also many problems that they work out together. Every little girl in the family is sweet, kind, caring, and smart, but throughout the book, their attitudes twist and turn in different directions. Different events occur that can make the reader laugh, cry, and wonder. Each chapter has a new mishap waiting to happen, and the whole book, I think is aimed mainly at letting the reader know that as a family, you can accomplish anything, but when you're alone, achieving your goals is like trying to write without any lead in your pencil. This story, even though there is some parts that are sad, and some that are wonderful, is completely fabulous the whole way through. It's entertaining, interesting and it definitely always kept me reading. I love this book, because it's better than any other. It has everything that you could ever possibly ask for in a book. I would reccomend this great story to anyone who enjoys reading about small adventures, such as ones that could take place in your own backyard.
Rating: Summary: all-of-a-kind-review by kate (age 10) Review: The book All-of-a-kind-family is a book about five ordinary girls and how they lived. Now-a-days things don't cost one cent for candy or 10 cents for a bow-tie. But back then it did and that is the time that this wonderful storie began. This is a storie that could happen in real life to anyone! Reading All-of-a-kind family is a fun way to learn a little bit of history about what things were like back then while it also makes you feel as if you were there too...you can smell the sweet, fresh, hot patatoes in the supermarket...feel the joy of just looking at the rides in the fair...and even taste the delicious home made soup that their mama made for dinner! I hope you decide to read this fun filled book! thanks for reading...
Rating: Summary: Doorway to another world... Review: I read the All-Of-A-Kind Family books as a child, and have managed to hold on to two well worn books from the series. I plan to buy the entire series anew . I loved these books as a child, they opened up a door to the past for me; they helped me imagine what life might have been like when my grandmother grew up in the early part of the century in NY. These books were my basic education in Jewish customs and holidays, as i grew up a non-practicing jewish/italian brooklyn mutt. I loved the rather distinct personalities of all the children, and remember identifying heavily with Sarah. This series of books remains a wonderful read for any child, jewish or not. There is such a warmth to these books. I just re-read one and I still love it!
