Summary: Hopefully, this IS the last don
Review: Round up all the usual 'dis and 'dat mugs and attempt to beleive that Mafiosos are cool guys. A complete waste of money. Is this a puff piece for the Mob? Isn't everyone just a wee bit bored with a bunch of lugs with baseball bats, fascist political sympathies and bad clothing? Personally, I hope this is the last of the dons I;ll be seeing for quite some time. This ranks up there with "Nixon-the autobiography" and pictures of my dog. Utterly forgettable

Summary: Excellent book!!!
Review: Written in the same manner that The Godfather was written. I couldn't put the book down. It grabed from the first page to the last. I can't wait to see the movie on TV. Nelson Varga

Summary: food for thought about the mafia today.
Review: Although some of the character names were (unintentionally?) funny, for the most part, the book read well. I think that there is no doubt that the mafia has gone legit, which is the underlying theme of this book. If we wonder about some of the actions of Corperate America, this book may well explain them. Also, at one point, the Don discusses the running of several State Lotteries in a way which is frighteningly authentic. There is so much money in crime, especially drugs, one has to wonder where it all goes

Summary: It's OK
Review: I agree with some of the other reviews--The Last Don is not The Godfather! I am only 2/3 of the way through but it's one of those books I can put down for a few days and not have to run home to straight after work. Don't mistaken my review, it's not a bad book, just that it's not what I had expected--something close enough to The Godfather

Summary: Guilty Pleasure
Review: God help me, but I can't stop reading this book eventhough I know it is mediocre at best. It is a lot of fun, but nothing to be proud of. The names are a great source of unintentional humor, though! "Athena Aquitaine"?? Come on, Mario

Summary: Great book!
Review: Puzo's "The Last Don" is as good as the "The Godfather". "Family" planning takes on a whole new meaning when it concerns the modern Mafia. I even learned the answer to why the state lotteries stretch payoffs over 20 years. (It's so the state can keep the principle while paying out only the interest)

Summary: NOT THE GODFATHER.
Review: A great insight into the modern mob. A good book, a little too detailed and slow in parts. It did not have all the blood and guts that i was expecting, nor did i find myself overly attached to any of the characters. Mario Puzo has tremendous insight and knowledge into Las Vegas, the movie industry and the mob. This book is slated to be a mini-series on cbs in may. my prediction, one of the most successful and highest rated of all time.

Summary: Lives of the mafia can not be better described than here!
Review: "The Last Don" comes from an author who writes as honestly and truthly about the soul of the mafia better than anyone. The story line keeps you reading so that you can find out what is in store for the two cousins future. The secrets behind the families elders also helps to bring the book to a tense climax and at every moment you wonder how thoughtful and rational "The Don" will be in his decision making. The book makes you realize the importance of patience and the downfalls that can occur when there is a lack of it!!

Summary: Major disappointment
Review: Having loved the Godfather, I have continued to read each book written by Mario Puzo and I have continued to be disappointed. The pre-publication hype for The Last Don, saying that Puzo was getting back to what he knows best, again made me hopeful. However, the new book can't hold a candle to the Godfather. I guess Mario only had one book in him. Still, I probably be in line when the movie opens

Summary: Puzo hits ocean bottom
Review: Puzo's new book is definitely not the masterpiece that The Godfather is. His characters are interesting, although I find the parts regarding showbusiness to be very boring. Whatever happened to the silent ferocity of the Mafia that Puzo wrote about in his 1969 classic? The book lacks the "quotability" of The Godfather, which gave us lines such as, "Revenge is a dish best served when cold." To give justice to his efforts, I still think it's good. But this book will definitely be making pirouettes at the sandy bottom
