Summary: BLAH!
Review: Animal Husbandry may very well be one of the worst books I have ever read! I had to literally force myself to finish this book. The constant scientific theories were utterly BORING! I have read many of the books in this genre (Bridget Jones, Girls Guide, etc.) and I expected this one to be just as good. It was not even close. The characters are boring & there is not any great character development. The writing style was poor & makes me wonder how this book was even published. The ending was extremely unfulfilling & I could care less what happened to the "heroine" of the story. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK! It is a complete waste of time.

Summary: A Outstanding Novel
Review: I really loved reading Animal Husbandry every night. It was very funny and sad at times. Over all Zigman did good writing. Can't wait till her other novel comes out.

Summary: A REAL Guide to Men's Thoughts
Review: The old-cow-new-cow theory describes in detail what most women feel while in a downward spiraling relationship. This should be a book sex-ed teachers assign young girls so that they can learn that crying over failed relationships will really get you nothing. Entertaining and a true to life tale.

Summary: Yawner for the rest of us
Review: Unless you have recently been dumped, this book will take you nowhere. I kept hoping for some plot twist to lure me in, but I was left feeling flat and very disappointed. For those who have been dumped and perhaps lean towards the "psycho-ex" stereotype, you will probably love and identify with this story. If you decide to read it anyway, I suggest ripping out the end (you won't miss anything) and writing your own.

Summary: Metaphorical cow theory for the recently dumped!
Review: As someone who has endured more heartbreak than she cares to admit, I thought Animal Husbandry was a breath of fresh air. It couldn't have possibly been more accurate! Even though there was a little male bashing in this book, I still felt as though I could have been Jane Goodall.

People find various ways to cope with being dumped, Jane decided to research male behavior by way of zoology. With the Old-Cow-New-Cow theory, she had been able to use male animal behavior as a metaphor for male human behavior. But was it really a metaphor, or do men have the same exact instincts as male animals? I agree that the book generalized men at times, but it was still a fun and clever read. I recommend this book to recently dumped females.

Summary: Not everything you read has to be meaningful
Review: I actually liked the saga of Jane Goodall (not THAT one) more than that damn Bridget Jones' story. At least Jane was aware that she was pathetic and the quotations interspersed throughout made me feel like I was learning a little about science and philosophy. Even so, Jane, her friends, Joan and David (whose shoes I happen to adore)her roommate and especially the one who got away are all a real bore after a while. Roy is unlovable and perhaps Ms. Zigman is guilty of writing a novel based a little too closely on personal tragedy because she truly characterizes Roy as the worst kind of wimp. He is absolutely pathetic and Jane's long slump that follows their breakup renders her pathetic. However, the book is light reading (make that lite) and harmless. Getting upset about the sexual politics of this book is a little like hating Elmo's morals.

Summary: It Feels Like We've All Been Here Before........
Review: "Animal Husbandry" by Laura Zigman really misses the mark. It feels very familiar and it doesn't offer any new concept or view. It doesn't add anything new to this category of fiction. It takes easy and cheap shots at men and relationships. While, there are moments of fun and humor, it just doesn't string together with enough force. I am a fan of Laura Zigman's "Dating Big Bird" and was excited about this book. But, I was let down and disappointed with it's results. Not worth your time of money...spend that on "dating big bird."

Summary: Funny and true to life
Review: Now, I've never been dumped, but at the time, my best friend was going through the end of a hurtful relationship, one that she didn't want to let go. I gave her this book after I finished it to help her, and she found it so true and had a good time with it. I found "Animal Husbandry" to be funny and true to life, not by my own experiences, but from other people who've had their hearts broken. Jane has been broken up with by Ray, and she develops a theory called the "New Cow-Old Cow Theory". It's funny how she comes to terms with this theory and puts it to test by the typical "alpha male" Eddie. It is a very relatable book and very entertaining.

Summary: had a few bright spots, but disappointing overall
Review: Because I really liked the author's second book, Dating Big Bird, I decided to check out this one. I was quite disappointed. In contrast to Dating Big Bird, Animal Husbandry has less interesting, more one-dimensional characters, clunky dialogue, and a rather silly premise. I mean, I've been dumped too, and it was terrible, but the author provides us with so much information as to why it would have been a bad relationship anyway that you feel like shaking the main character and saying, "You should be GLAD you didn't end up with this loser!" I found it hard to sympathize much with the main character.

The writing was so-so; the dialogue had a few funny spots, but overall, I felt like I was reading one of those too-short essays that my students try to stretch out with lots of white space and large block quotations. It is not necessary to have a new title page for every 3-page long "chapterlet."

However, as I mentioned before, even if you were disappointed by this book, you may enjoy Dating Big Bird. I think the author's style has really improved with time.

Summary: unoriginal and mildly amusing
Review: One of those books you can read fast on a plane trip, skipping a page here and there, and not miss anything important. Equating human male sexual behavior to animal behavior is not a new idea and other writers have done it far better. Author has shaped her narrative through this gimmick and that's all the book has going for it, which isn't much. Can't believe it was a best seller (then again, I willingly plunked down my dollars like everyone else, so there you go.
