Rating: Summary: Not a story of lust, a story of TRUE love Review: This was by far the best book I've read in quite some time. I read it in one day, and stayed up until 1:30 when I had read it all. I loved it, and I look forward to the day when I find a book as good as this.
Rating: Summary: Implausible and Gratingly ... Review: Though I must applaud Pratt's research and dedication to the historical details of the time in which he is writing, I simply cannot get over the lack of imagination in his tale. Though I describe myself as a romantic, this novel contained barely a whit of plausibility, and was insultingly sexist. The strong characters are the heroic men who seem to have been designed from a 1930's propaganda poster, while the good women sit at home and wait tearfully for their boys to return. This novel lacks complexity, and was predictable from start to finish. It tried so desperately to tweak the heart strings that its transparent efforts made the attempt all the more irritating. I was hardly compelled to "pull out the tissue box" as other reviewers claim, and instead needed to fight the urge to throw the book away in contempt. The dialogue is stilted and the characters are one-dimensional (no chracter suffers from a fault, a moment of cowardice, or even bad personal hygiene); the only saving grace is the author's attention to detail and genuine effort. But even that could not rescue this book from the levels of melodrama it achieved.
Rating: Summary: Interesting premise, very poorly written Review: Went to the trouble of reserving this book at the library. What a waste of time. The writer is clearly overly emotionally tied to the subject maerial. His maudlin writing badly needed an expert editor -- the story line rambled from page to page, there were discontinuities in the story, and none of the characters was compelling. The word Love is grossly overused, almost as if the writer thought that using it on each page was all it takes to engage the reader. I suspect that the writer had enough money to get this published independently or it might not have gotten published at all!
Rating: Summary: Two unequal love stories Review: While I enjoyed The Last Valentine and would recommend it, I felt the current-day love story of Neil Jr. and the reporter (see, I can't even remember her name!) pales greatly next to the amazing WWII story. An excellent example of why love lasted in those days and does not today!
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put this book down Review: While I prefer mysteries, I am a romantic at heart and the Last Valentine was a winner in my book. The story reminded me a lot of "Bridges of Madison County" in that it was written from a grown child's perspective for the most part and it was an old fashioned love story unlike the predictable garbage usually written today. I think it stood out even more now because of the war going on and the fact that many of us are sending our loved ones away as the main character in this book had to do. Read it on rainy day with a box of tissues and a cup of tea and you won't be disappointed.

Rating: Summary: For all Cynics and Hopeless Romantics: READ THIS BOOK!!! Review: You are reading the confessions of a reformed cynic. This book has a love story in it's purest form, without all the junk that sometimes clouds things. In it you see what true Love is, and it makes you hope. These are not the ramblings of some young love-sick girl, these are the words of someone who had lost faith in real, time-honored, make-it-through-at-any-cost love....this book restored that faith. A Thank you to Mr. Pratt for a novel that touched my heart.
