Rating: Summary: Hits the nail on the head about overeating Review: (I read the previous edition.) The information in this book is VERY VERY VERY VERY POWERFUL! Everyone who struggles with weight should read this book! This book is not another diet. It doesn't propose a solution that is that simplistic. This book provides a method for getting to and dealing with the ROOT of why many people overeat (I've known for years that I don't overeat because I'm hungry, but I never had tools to deal with why I do overeat). Besides the specific lessons and techniques, I found the examples from other peoples' experience were very helpful for me to actually recognize what is going on inside me. I think doing the work this book calls for will not only change my weight, but will also make an important improvement in my life. (I'd also suggest this book to anyone dealing with other compulsive/addictive problems.)
Rating: Summary: This program helps you to discover yourself. Review: After reading this book, I joined a Solution's group, and have taken it twice. This is much more than a weight loss program. Through doing the work that the author recommends, I have become much more in touch with myself, and have calmed down my emotionally driven eating episodes. This doesn't mean that I never indulge in emotional eating anymore, but I'm much more aware of what I'm doing, and I don't beat myself up for it as much. That, in itself, is a small miracle. I see shifts happening in my life as I use words, not weight, to express myself. This is a book that you have to work, not just read. I suggest buying the journals and joining a group if you can. This is a powerful program for those who choose to use it.
Rating: Summary: Not everyone is one size fits all Review: This book is a very 'one size fits all'. according to the writer, it *appears* she suggests that everyone with a weight issue has these 6 issues and that unless you fix these 6 issues in the way SHE states, you can not be cured. It blames your parents for their lack of 'insert what ever here'. Not everyone has these exact issues and writing a book that reads like a vcr manuel without no real guidance doesnt help I dont feel. I got nothing at all out of the book and was rather put off by her claiming to understand the root of all the problems with overweight people. I dont appreciate the blame being placed on parents. We, ourselves, are responsible for the most part. I dont like the 'know it all' approach. I didnt even get through the entire book before I took it back to the library. It was dull and boring with no real help of HOW to go about doing what she suggests.personal opinion only.
Rating: Summary: Compelling Solution Review: I first learned about this book when I saw the author on the last 90 seconds of a...show related to childhood obesity. Based on what I heard, I found and purchased this book through Amazon[.com]. I have read the book twice in the last month. It is a Compelling Solution for weight issues although, not a quick fix. The book offers a way to learn to nuture ourselves from the inside so we don't feel the need to provide external solutions such as food to nuture ourselves. I am now reading the authors newest book, The Pathway, and I am starting to use the skills day by day. I am hopeful to find a permanent solution (over time) to my weight issues that I have carried all my life. It's been my experience that good things do often require that I be willing to do daily diligence and then earn the rewards over time. Good things do come to those who wait (and take action while they are "waiting")!!! I highly recommend this book if you have weight issues and feel like you have tried everything but have not yet found a lasting solution. What do you have to lose?
Rating: Summary: Useful information, but skip the New Age lingo! Review: This book has very valuable information, and while I agree that one should stay in touch with their feelings, I dislike the wording used to describe it......"going inside yourself", "inner journey", "inner balance", too much New Age mumbo jumbo to just say to stay in touch with your feelings. I personally draw my strenth, guidance and wisdom from God through an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ, not by going "inside myself"....I do like the analogy of "popping the hood" to check in with those feelings, and the actual concept of "the method", but don't like the New Age flavor it's written in. I have still taken away useful information by distilling it down to its basic concepts and disregarding the phraseology used to describe it. I wish there were a Christian book written about these concepts. It would be great!
Rating: Summary: The Real Truth Review: Laurel is a revolutionary in her field. She is no con man like Dr. Phil. She knows the TRUTH about the obesity problem millions are facing today. I know this because she has changed my life through her book "The Solution" sice way back in '99. She knows that it will not help to put presure on yourself and keep saying that you "have to lose weight" , that just puts everyone in a dark and depressed state. Instead she shows you how to get in touch with your feelings instead of the can of beans in your kitchen cabinet. Read this book!! it may not be an 8 minute fix but if you put the time in, you will never be the same!
Rating: Summary: A really great book Review: I wouldn't characterize this book as a weight loss book. It's more of a "understanding your life book" and the weight loss just happens to be a great side effect. Instead of giving you diets that you will never stick to, it gives you support for the emotional issues that drive you to eat. There are exercises and examples that clearly get her point across. I really think that this time I'll lose all my weight and I will permanently keep it off.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Reading Review: It's amazing to me the "not so common sense" Laurel approaches weight loss. I started reading this book and have recommended it to anyone trying to lose weight....This book completely makes sense. ... I have about 70 more lbs. to get back to my weight when I was a size 7/8 and with this book and exercise, I am finding my way, slowly and surely!
Rating: Summary: A cure, not a quick fix Review: This book has changed my life. Laurel presents a program that if followed has the power to cure weight problems not just give a quick fix that will rebound to more weight gain. Using real life examples and specific questions you can ask yourself, Laurel guides you along the pathway to a weight solution with humor, insight, and compassion.
Rating: Summary: The Solution by Laurel Mellin Review: Had I gone to a bookstore and picked up this book, I would never have bought it. There is nothing in it that I have not already heard or read. I guess I am looking for an easy solution and there is none. At the age of 60, I should know there is no magic formula for losing weight. When you are as depressed as I am, reading this book just adds to the depression.
