Summary: Cooke's voyage brought to life by undramatic diary
Review: A fictionalized account of Cooke's discovery of New Zealand told through the diaries of a young boy who stows away onboard. The book brings the experience to life, but there isn't any particular dramatic build to the tale, and the diary form feels undramatic. Still, not bad.

Summary: A hidden stowaway on a vast ship
Review: A quick pace tale of a boy named Nicolas Young. Based on "Endeavor", a true ship sailed by james Cook, it shows life in a churning, tumbling mass of water. It shows the wonder and the horror of the sea, in its open freeness. The book is written through Nicolas Young's eyes, and portrays life out in the open sea.

Summary: More history than fiction!
Review: Having known only a few isolated facts about Captain James Cook and his expeditions, this book sent me running to the encyclopedia to learn more. It is indeed impressive to learn that Cook's crew was made up partially of gentlemen scholars who set out to further the world's knowledge not only of geography, but astronomy (observing the Venus pass before the sun), botany, zoology, medicine (being among the first to prevent an outbreak of scurvy) and cultural anthropology. The level of discipline and high standards of behavior demanded by Captain Cook were equally impressive. Told from the daily journal of an 11-year-old stowaway who has escaped an oppressive past, but through the skillful writing of Karen Hesse, the story is appealing to youngsters with an adventurous spirit. I would recommend this book to strong readers.

Summary: You can almost smell the salt air...
Review: Hesse makes history come alive in this fictionalized journal based on the voyages of Capt. Cook and his sail 'round the world. Whether readers are drawn by the natural history, the adventure, or the diary format, all will become quickly immersed in this richly detailed story about a stowaway on a fantastic voyage.

Summary: Stowaway
Review: I liked the book, which was based on a true story. Although it was a diary, it was written by an author and not someone who lived the story. I thought it was great how Karen wrote a true story from a children's point of view. I would definitely recommend this book.

Review: I really liked "Stowaway" by Karen Hesse. It was funny, sad, and informational all at the same time. The parts about the Gentlemen and their botanizing made me laugh out loud. I thought the book was put together really well, too. The endpaper was creative and interesting. This is a really great book and would interest fans of history as well as adventurous readers. It's great for both boys and girls.
