Summary: Wonderful!
Review: This is the second book in the Sally Lockhart series. I thoroughly enjoyed The Ruby in the Smoke and I though it was good for my daughter to read about a strong heroine. I am all for "girl power" and Sally seemed to be an intelligent young woman. In this book, however, I changed my opinion of it's appropriatness for children. Sally and Fred finally know that they love each other and go discreetly to her bedroom. Next thing we know, she is pregnant. I realize that this happens in real life and in the story, it was very subtle and far from any sort of smut, but I just don't think that it is appropriate reading material for young girls. Can't some things wait? If the story needed to be written this way, it should not have been published and marketed to children.

Summary: A Brilliant Second Novel for the Sally Lockhart Trilogy!
Review: This is the second book in the Sally Lockhart Trilogy and totally wonderful.
The story follows Sally some years later after The Ruby in the Smoke, now a financial consultant with her own company.
One of Sally's clients come to her one day, losing a large sum of money that her brother left her, due to the collapse of a company she invested in. Sally, of course, is totally outraged, and sets out to investigate the cause of this collapse and get her client back the money.
Following this, a complicated plot of twists and turns come up, involving a very troubled "magician," Mackinnon, who is being followed around by men, attempting to murder him after he witnessed a murder through his psychic powers, the powerful man, Mr. Bellman, who is suspected by Sally to have made the company collapse and is attempting to kill Mackinnon, with more new characters including Lady Mary, Nellie Bly, Isabel Meredith, Lord Wyneth, and old characters including Fred and Jim - all twisted into this mystery and the new invention of a Steam Gun.
This book is a two thumbs up thriller and totally heart-wrenching (I'm not saying anything, but I was practically crying at the end). It was tragic and excellent. I loved it!

Summary: Seeing the beginnings of a formula
Review: Though Sally, Fred, Jim, etc. are older, the background remains the same. Pullman uses the same devices as in his previous Lockhart mystery including the use of a set of identical twins. The villians are more sinister and the sacrifices are larger. Hopefully the last book will prove to be more sophisticated than this particular episode.

Summary: A thrill!
Review: Wow was this book good. The shadow in the North is a thrilling mystery novel about two cases and the link between them. In this story Sally has matured into a woman and owns her own buisness as a financial consultant. When a lady comes to her after losing 3 thousand pounds Sally is shocked. The stock she told her to invest in was very safe and profitable. Meanwhile Fredric and Jim get involved in another case. After Jim saves the life of a Scottish medium he realizes that there is more to his story than fake physic visions. But when these two seemingly different cases intertwine with one another the three charecters may discovered that they're involved in something much more complicated than they expected.

In my opinion this book had the certain something that the first one lacked (not that that book was bad or anything). It's fast paced and exciting. I nearly creid when you-know-what happened! If your a fan of the Sally Lockheart Trilogy I reccomend you read this. I'll be sure to read the last one.
