Rating: Summary: Dave Barry...History Teacher for the Nation Review: Dave Barry doesn't hit the nail on the head, or even the side of the barn, but I'll take his version of American History over what I learned in high school every day. "Simplifying" things for his readers by having all historic events occur on October 8 is just one of the many ways Dave skewers American history and the way it is taught to us. What makes Barry not just funny but relevant is the way he uses humor to bring home an important point. Much of the U.S. history that is taught in our schools is not based in actual facts, but myths and propaganda that gain recognition over time. Barry figures that if he is going to write history the wrong way, he should try to make it as funny as possible. I'm sure I'm not the only one here looking for an updated edition of Dave's "sort of" history of the United States.
Rating: Summary: Dave Barry Slept here, read it now! Review: Dave Barry gives such hallarious accunts into history as his wording of the Monroe Doctrine: "1.Other nations are notallowed to mess around with the internal affairs of nations in this hemisphere. 2.But we are. 3.Ha-ha-ha."
Rating: Summary: Very cute fluff. Review: Dave Barry has applied his wit to a simplified American history, and done it nicely. Students around the world will be gratified to know that they no longer have to memorize dates, because Barry has settled it so that everything happened on October 8th, even the 4th of July. It's funny, and you'll laugh and have a good time. It is not nearly so clever, however, as "1066 and All That."
Rating: Summary: D.B. has done it again! Review: Dave Barry has done it again! This book is top notch funny, from his continual use of the date October 8, or his parody of George Herbert Walker Armouire Vestibule Bush. A definite must-read to prepare for history class!
Rating: Summary: Not up to usual Barry standards Review: Dave Barry is a great humorist, and I've read about 8 of his books so far, but this one was by far the worst. Not terrible, just not as funny as the others I've read, which I would rate in the 8 - 1O range. If you've never read him, don't read this one first, you'll be doing yourself a disservice.
Rating: Summary: ironically funny Review: Dave Barry is funny...plain and simple. His take of the history oh America is quite an interesting one. First of all, he states that every big even in American history happened on October 8th, even the 4th of July! His clever wording, and placement of people in timeperiods in great. Dave "Barry" Barry is a "good writer" and this book is "funny." Buy it now! Or at least, wait til october 8th...
Rating: Summary: A great twist on the facts and faces of American History Review: Dave Barry Slept Here is the most hillarious interpretation of American History I have ever read. The simple way he distorts facts, and comically labels major figures from the past like King George III are great. Probably one of the most enjoyable books that I have ever read. For anyone who knows a lot about American History, this is the difinitive book to read. I do think that if you do not know that much about American History, you will still find the book amusing, but not nearly as humorous as I.
Rating: Summary: Barry at his best Review: Dave Barry Turns 40 seems to have been a bigger hit, especially with critics, but his take on American history has always been my favorite of his works. Only a basic course in U.S. history is needed to get most of the humor, though Dave strays as usual, tackling such tough questions as whether Unitas should have started Super Bowl III for the Colts? Downright hilarious.
Rating: Summary: Funniest book I've read Review: For sheer gut busting laughs, this is the funniest book I've read. You do need some knowledge of American history to appreciate a lot of the satire, but it's a riot on any level. "Science Made Stupid" (not by Dave Barry) comes in a close second.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Review: I found this book completely hilarious, and History is my least favorite subject. I borrowed it from a friend at school and finished it before dinner. I tried to read it out loud to my mom, but I didn't get very far because we were laughing so hard that I couldn't talk and she couldn't listen. (She finished it on her own.) Definitely worth reading.
