Summary: No less than Black Voodoo
Review: I've read everything from funky to old fizz. Vurt lives and breathes in pure crystalline. My mind and my thought process was metamorphisized into a complete new twist of existence. If you haven't read Vurt, you haven't been reading. So get yourself a copy, put this life aside, and begin listening to the Gamecat.

Summary: ITS UPSIDEDOWN AND INSIDE OUT. DISTURBINGLY WONDERFUL.
Review: To start at the end is to start at the beginning. Complelling reading for all with a broad and vivid imagination. The lack of time reference is great. Is it Manchester now or in the future?

Scribble is the main character, The thing is an alien, there's a kid, a girlfriend, psycho selfish friend and the Game Cat. The character are simple in definition with a depth of personality the book never explains but shines through with neon clarity.

The concept - Mind altering drugs which take you to another world which is real with the sublime depth of knowledge living as a dream. The stash Riders are out to find a lost Sister. Friends, sacrifice, and a big snarling dog. To put it quite simply VURT! Read it or never feel the twist of mine and your reality.

Summary: The fantasy side of Cyberpunk
Review: After reading Vurt I fell in love with it to the point where I now only first editions of all of Noon's literature, Vurt being an autographed first. It is quite definitely a cyberpunk novel, but unlike most cyberpunk, it leans more on an element of fantasy than the traditional sf cyberpunk. Really good book, I would recommend to anyone who's into the sort of thing

Summary: A feather in your mouth:
Review: Vurt, by Jeff Noon is one of the most creative books that I have read in the sf&f world. It seems almost like a combo of A Clockwork Orange (the way Jeff Noon invents words, deriving them from words already in existance; also the all night Vurt-You-Want is analagous to the Korova Milkbar), Neuromancer (the general style of writing, cyberpunk theme), and Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland (the sort of mysticism that surrounds the plot, how a child is chasing down something that seems trivial to others, how he encounters a strage and almost magical world, paralelling to reality), and finally of Tekwar (the theme deals with the solicitation of drugs that don't exist in the non fiction world, and the battling that goes along with them). The plotline is very simple when you strip it of detail, which is part of why it becomes such an intriguinging, such a simple plotline bears such a complex plot. I think that Jeff Noon did a commendable job on his first book, and look ! forward to reading more books by him.

Summary: Totally unpure
Review: I picked up this book solely 'cause its cover was the shiniest on the shelf in the library. It'd been sitting there for 4 years, and I was the first to read that copy (and the last.. heheheh.. PAY for a book?). So I read it 3 times in the past 2 years. Yeah, it was worth all 5 stars. Now for the why part: Noon doesn't write -- it's more like song on the paper. It took me a few pages to get used to, but the rest just _flowed_, just as the plot did. This was FAR better than Automated Alice (also Noon), and it basically puts you right there.. kinda like a dream you remember, you know? Read the book ;>

Summary: We all out there...waiting for something to happen...
Review: So..out of the blue one day in '94 my friend was reading this book about feathers, incest and sex..raving about it to the hilt. Not wanting to miss on one of her recommendations, I borrowed it from her. The next day I bought my own copy. Vurt is totally feathered up living on the dubside, capturing the energy of the Manchester drug scene alongside neo-dystopian technophobia and technophilia. So if you want to drift in a world intrinsically differnt, inhabitied by hybrid lifeforms which are taken for granted, whilst at the same time recognisable with modern day Manchester, get this. Go on..it will be a good trip

Summary: Be careful, my Kitlings.
Review: I initially picked up this book for no reason other than that my birthday money was burning a hole in my pocket, and its cover was the brightest and most unusual on the shelves. Looking back, it may have been the best $20 I'd ever spent. Noon's writing is an incredible blend of slang and poetry, imagery and emotion whose complexity will intrigue you even as the sing-song simplicity of the language draws you in. Perhaps this book is better called "speculative fiction" than mere "sci-fi", for it carries well-developed characters and meaningful ideas. Be warned, however, that this book is not for the faint of heart (nor the weak of stomach). Noon's characters grapple with many strange and dark ideas. The end will leave you leave you thinking, and perhaps a bit confused--which is, of course, a wonderful excuse to pick up the book and read it again.

Summary: Science Fiction???
Review: I'll admit it right now, I'm not one for a "science fiction" book. When I first picked Vurt up, I groaned inwardly at the thought of a wasted $12.00. I grudgingly started reading the book, and was amazed to find that not only was I enjoying it, but I couldn't put it down. The lingo was a bit confusing at first, but it soon melded into an understandable language. It was a great book altogether. (Of course, I don't admit to it being science fiction!)

Summary: Don't die before you read this one!
Review: Noon has created a completely immersive world where realities, both virtual and actual, become merged, with the Vurt feathers as the doors between them. I particularly found interesting the feathers and the 'physics' of their operation. Noon's charactors are richly created and play very complimentary roles to each other. If you are a fan of the Gibson-style of fiction, you are sure to love this book. Additionally, Paul McGann's audio performance of this book is outstanding. Listen to it through headphones at night during a storm for a very powerful experience. You might even be tempted to bring a feather...

Summary: well worth reading
Review: i really wasnt sure how to 'rate' this book. normally when you read a book you have a definate feeling about whatever you just read. of course i had one. but it was confusing as hell.

the plot is excellent, and very very interesting. and like most books of this type, you have to know what you are getting into. it is obviously going to have 'objectionable' material. this isn't reading for your grandmother. in past times i have described this book as 'clockwork orange' on drugs.

i decieded i would give it the highest rating anyone could possible give. and i meant it. i was disturbed for a few days after reading this book. having an incestual relationship as a main plot element is quite unusual. and making it so graphic takes it that one step further. but it pushed the limits of what i was willing to accept.

the idea of what vurt is might be the coolest thing about this book.

if you like this sort of book, which you probably do if you are reading the reviews on this page, you should pick this book up. just dont give your sister/brother the eye after reading it. that still _isnt_ socially acceptable.
