Summary: Enjoyable action adventure.
Review: A friend tipped me off to WEB Griffin and I started off with his "Men At War" series, but out of order. This being the kickoff to the series, it came up as my second read.

Therefore, it was most interesting to get the complete back-story on the principle fictional characters. It certainly puts a more proper perspective on chapter two ("Secret Warriorts").

I particularly enjoyed the mixing of actual events and real people from the WWII era with the fictional characters. It gives a greater feeling of reality and you feel part of the action.

The series revolves around the founding and early days of the OSS...and our quest to beat the Axis powers in the race to develop the Atomic Bomb. Here we experience the setup to covertly attain the uranium necessary to complete the task.

The primary fictional characters are remarkably portrayed in a way that would make Errol Flynn, John Wayne and Tyrone Power proud. The action and plot flow smoothly and the book is great fun.

The characters are truly well developed and you feel an intimacy with many of them. You want them to show up in the next book in the series. Mr. Griffin does a good job of getting you to care about the players and to cheer for them all the way.

I am thankful to my friend for this recommendation and plan to read plenty more WEB Griffin.

Summary: Another collection of cliche characters in a cliche story
Review: Another good, short read, Griffin novel. It has his usual collection of assorted characters doing something exciting in a strange place.

I have several problems with Mr. Griffins books. He writes stories that are interchangable; the plot and characters would work just as well in Boston for the Revolution, or on Mars for the overthrow. Even the cop stories, although everyone knows that Carlucci's real name is Rizzo.

The next several problems (complaints) I think speak more to the author's reasons for writing as a career choice. Mr Griffin pads his stories. If you stripped away all of the repetitive flashbacks and visual copies of outside forms he has produced at best a novella. In his more recent books, he reminds the reader of occurances from the beginning of the book, as well as several pages each on every pertinent detail from previous stories. And that leads to my final objection to the authors works; he frequently makes mistakes. People in book 1 of the Corps series who do not speak Japanese are fluent by book 3; Ernie Zimmerman can hardly get the .45 out of it's holster in book 1 and in book four, he was using it quite well. Well, in book one Lt Sessions took it from him to use. I now re-read his earlier books, to find new and better mistakes. The books are entertaining to read. If they were just a small bit less so, I'd drop this author from my must read list in a New York minute.

Summary: Weak and disappointing
Review: As a fan of W.E.B. Griffin, I found THE LAST HEROS to be disappointing. It is supposed to be about the Manhattan Project. In fact it isn't a novel, it is just the introductory chapter of a novel-a very long introduction, with an intriguing premise, but it really doesn't get beyond that. I found the "romance" to be a shallow distraction. Apparently, Mr. Griffin had an idea for a novel, which he planned to milk into a series. Replace "milk" with "water down". Sorry, no more from me. Instead I'll re-read the Brotherhood Series.

Summary: Great read, suspenseful, typical Griffin
Review: Formula WEB Griffin. Monied and unmonied in the service during the early days of WWII. Intrigue, amorous liaisons, fast paced, exciting. I loved it.

Summary: Good read, but . . .
Review: Griffin has been one of my favorite authors for over ten years, and I've read other books of the same genre. One thing to note about this particular series is that the books were all written over a decade ago (under a psuedonym), but the publisher is promoting the books as "new" now that Griffin is revealed as the author. Still, an enjoyable window into the formation of the OSS/CIA -- before it was corrupted in its mission in the Fifties.

Summary: There he goes again!
Review: Griffin recycles plots, renames the good guys and the bad guys, puts different weapons in their hands, keeps the slinky women in various stages of undress, re-treads the national leaders in a sly mode. And doggone it, he sells out again and again. I can't help myself, when I see a Griffin on the shelf, it automatically ends up in my 'must read' sack. Poor ol' Wild Bill Donovan must have been in about 3 zillion titles since his fruit salad days. FDR, an infinite number. Now Canidy and Bittner will be lionized in futures(although I get the feeling this is a tacky re-sale of previous works.) in about four or five books.

Summary: Pretty good Griffin - not the best
Review: I am a big fan and I thought I had read all that Mr. Griffin had written, until "Last Heros." I bought it from Amazon on the first day it was available and read it with interest. A fair and predictable work. My big complaint is that it was published as a new work. In doing some research, I discovered it had been published years ago and just dressed up as new. W.E.B., you should consider and new and more honest publisher. We are anxiously awaiting the next in the "Corps" series.
