Rating: Summary: Myth-shattering book Review: Exciting and remarkable are not too strong words for this truly intimate journey that shatters many of the myths commonly held about women, their bodies and their minds. Forget labels. Ms. Angier's study debunks predetermination by gender. Her investigation blends scientific, medical studies, history and art into an eloquent and inspiring work.Representing another look into female biology, Five Minutes to Orgasm Every Time You Make Love - For Women Only debunks many of the proffered myths of our society, specifically that women are slower than men to reach orgasm. Why not? As Ms. Angier reveals, the clitoris contains 8,000 nerve fibers, effectively doubling the pleasure of the penis. Both books help change the image that women are in any way "less than" men. Women are more adaptive, more sexual, and stronger than previously believed.
Rating: Summary: funny, thoughtful, and deeply felt Review: I loved the way Angier turned commonly held perceptions on their head, looked at them from odd angles, filled up the chapters with insight and wit. She was laugh-out-loud funny, and at the same time, her wisdom gave strength to her interpretations. This book also has one of the most elegantly beautiful, and beautifully designed, bookjackets I have ever seen.
Rating: Summary: Cloying, Annoying and Simple Minded Review: While the author does manage to work in some interesting analysis of evolutionary psychology, the bulk of this book is a mix of patronizing anatomy lesson with self serving speculation on all things female. And as the following passage makes clear, the writing is often just awful. "But, gals, there's no denying it: sometimes we stink, and we know it. Not like strawberry yogurt or a good Cabernet but like, alas, albacore. Or even skunk. How does this happen? If you haven't bathed for a week, I'll let you figure it out for yourself." This is the work of a Pulitzer winner?
Rating: Summary: Women is wonderfull book, that you won't want to put down Review: Women:An intimate Geography is a well-written book that argues against biological determinism and evolutionary psychology. In todays conservative age our society continues to focus on the differences between men and women, black and white, straight or homosexual. Evolutionary psychology is a outgrowth of the conservative movement and has more to do with old stereotypes and social darwinism than with good scientific research. Angier points this out in her book by showing how the research is often flawed. The use of questionaires and research that does not take into account the social context. Also the statistics in these studies are notoriously bad. As a psychologist I find that these studies often use poor logic. I think that all the evolutionary psychologist's should take a class in formal logic as well as the history and the philosophy of science. Angier argues very well about the sexism that is still present in our society and how researchers misuse science to hold on to old ideas. If you have not read the mismeasure of man by Stephan J. Gould then you should before reading this book. Then look at the arguments used by evolutionary psychologist and see that what Stephan J. Gould points out in his book is happening again today.
Rating: Summary: Spicy biology Review: A good book for those who are open to learn biological facts regarding women's body through real life stories and other spices.
Rating: Summary: Woman is Witty and Wonderful Review: With prose that flow like a mountain stream -- at times meandering, then rushing over the falls to settle in lucid pools of understanding -- Natalie Angier teaches us more about science and the nature of women than Darwin ever imagined. As a self-proclaimed "female chauvinist sow", the author takes us on a wild romp through the female body, debunking male-proffered myths as she goes and leaving us with greater respect, understanding and wonderment for everyting from eggs to estrogen. Angier knows her science, and she knows how to touch a reader's emotions, making us chuckle, empathize and sigh on cue as she draws on personal material, the lives of other women and sceientific research to make her point. The author gives us a fresh perspective on women that could go a long way to improving self-image among women and reducing misunderstanding among men. A must read for anyone who has anything to do with women (which pretty much includes all of us who have ever been born!)
Rating: Summary: This book helped me as a healer Review: This book is truly wonderful. As a best-selling author on the internal energy of the human body (Chi Gung: Chinese Healing, Energy, and Natural Magick), an International healer, and a Two-Spirit Shaman, I am always looking for more information about how our bodies work and what makes them unique. I have found that magical blend of information and humor in Natalie's wonderful book. For anyone interested in healing themselves and others, learning about women, or even changing their bodies like I have, this book is truly incredible and a lot of fun. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning a little more about the wonders and mysteries of being a woman.
Rating: Summary: Wow! What a great read! Review: A fantastic voyage through the female body and mind that transcends all the cliches about gender differences and subtly and inexorably leaves the reader enlightened about love and life itself. The prose is smooth as silk. Every page has something to revel in or to ponder. A very smart book!
Rating: Summary: Clinical and gushy Review: Poorly argued polemic tarted up as serious thought written in gushy, self concious, psuedo-poetic prose. Many of the descriptions, meant to be courageously bold, are simply embarassingly clinical.
