Rating: Summary: Fell for him the first time..... Review: ....but not this time. When she checks into the hotel and sees the picture by famed photog Robert Kincaid I suddenly needed a shower. Yuck.....
Rating: Summary: A great novel that fits my taste Review: ...afte I started to browse Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend, I felt I liked the characters in this novel very much and I finished reading this book within half month when I ride subways to work. It's a very touching romantic story. I expect to see Hollywood make it a movie someday and I wish it win Oscar!!!!!
Rating: Summary: I'm giving this a "2" because... Review: ...I already deemed Waller's first novel, "The Drudges of Madison County," the worst book in the solar system. What to say about this one? Well, the dialogue was, as expected, overwrought (is it just me, or would anyone else out there burst out laughing at some of the things Michael says to Jellie while they're knocking booties?). Michael's various shenanigans (taking off before finals, giving his students grades based only on the semester's work, pissing off the dean, making goo-goo eyes at the dean's wife...) would get him fired at my university, darn tootin'. While we're on the subject of universities, raise your hand if you found Pat Sanchez offensive. I mean, how many times am I going to have to read about a Spanish character who has "fought her way up from the barrio?" And why are they all named Sanchez? I don't know a single person with that last name and I live in Los Angeles! Then again, if you want well-drawn, unique characters; a stirring plot; and a subtle yet strong message, maybe you should try reading the label on your package of Kraft Singles. Not only is it a compelling read, but the contents are much more satisfying than this doggerel.
Rating: Summary: Sweet romance yet again Review: After falling in love with Bridges of Madison County and Puerta Vallarta Squeeze, I expected a great deal from Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend. And I certainly wasn't disappointed. Once again, Robert James Waller has woven a beautifully sweet tale of love and longing, a tale of following your heart and your dreams. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Waller's beautifully flowing prose captured my imagination as I traveled with Michael Tillman from the quaint Cedar Bend, Iowa to the lush and exotic India. Two thumbs way up!
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment! Review: Having read "Bridges", I would never imagine Waller would be a one-hit-wonder. I still hope it is not the case. I can only say "Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend" is a cup of lukewarm water. I was surprised and disappointed.
Rating: Summary: SILLY Review: How many short, silly novellas can one author turn out with wafer-thin plots and cliched characters that struggle not to fall into bed with each other, knowing all along that's exactly what they're going to do? This book was almost as bad as Bridges...but not quite. But then, not much could be.
Rating: Summary: don't read this book Review: i actually liked "the bridges of madison county"; so i anxiously checked-out this book. i was totally turned off and was not able to finish it. silly story and poorly written. this happened to me several years ago and i still remember the suffering. to put this experience into perspective, i always enjoy reading novels and don't remember walking away from any other books so upset.
Rating: Summary: It seemed to drag on and on and on Review: I finally got around to listening to this book on tape that I found at the local library. I had hoped since it was read by the author, I would get more of a feel for the characters. Instead, I was often bored, and wished he would just get to the point. I got sick of him constantly using both the first and last name together "Jellie Braden" or "Leonard Markum" "Michael Tillman" as if all names are one word instead of two. There were some good points to the story, and I don't mean to totally trash it. There are just so many other love stories that are better told.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful and very sensitive middle-age love story Review: I liked the book from the very beginning, reading it in one "shot". It is an excellent love story, very sensitive, with beautiful descriptions of the characters and events. The campus-life descriptions bring many memories, and the love scenarios are touching. The two parallel lives of Jellie Braden are beautifuly described, and Mikel is a real "character" (maybe like the author...?, definitely like his "budy"/"prototype" Robert Kincaid). I liked the flow of events, the jump between present and past, the description of life in a small campus-town, the life in India, and especially the love-related events. I liked the description of the "ever increasing" relationships between the two main souls - Jellie and Mikel, especially the "swans in the pool" scenario and the follow-up....where the "slow waltz" is becoming a real love. But, I felt that the author went "one bridge too far", with the end of the book. It could have as well been finished one chapter "earlier", after Jellie and Mikel were re-united in India. I enjoyed reading the book, and definitely rate it as one of the good ones I ever read.
Rating: Summary: Not Bridges, but OK Review: I love the down to earth style of the author. If you like it, you'll like Hemenway and Agori (Defenders of the Holy Grail) but it is not TRYING so hard to be intellectual. Does life have to be complicated? True emotions run deep. This book is worth it.
