Rating: Summary: Medical thriller Review: Like Robin Cook, Michael Palmer writes medical thrillers. For those who doesn't know what this is, Palmer does with doctors what Grisham does with lawyers. The problem is, in my opinion, hospitals and doctors lack the plot-oportunities that we can easily find in the legal profession. So, in the end, everything seems very improbable, and the reader gets a feeling something is missing. "Silent treatment" is about Dr. Korbet, a general practicioner (if I understood right, "gp"s are low in the "scale of doctors") whose wife is suddenly murdered during pre-op procedures. Korbet's life begins to go down the drain when he's accused of the murder and has no way to prove his innocence. On the other hand, a bunch of hot-shots of the medical-insurance industry are making reunions to, in a most unorthodox way, receive more money from their contributors. Obviously, the two plots are linked in some way or another. This is not "the ultimate thriller", but is a light enterteinment, and an easy reading. There are many flaws, the most obvious being the very shall development of characters. The "bad guy" had a very good premise, but went underdeveloped as well, unfortunately. If you are a Michael Palmer fan, read this one. If you're not, give it a try, if you have some time to spare. Grade 8.1/10
Rating: Summary: The best medical mystery ever written Review: Michael Palmer has really done it this time. Such excitement, thrill, suspense, and frightening reality, as he breaks open the mythof the managed care system in the United States! Every person in or considering the managed care plan, MUST read this book. Ellen Siepser, M.D.
Rating: Summary: Good solid potboiler Review: Michael Palmer's thriller 'Silent Treatment' didn't keep me up at night turning pages. The female characters were unconvincing as was the love interest between an alcoholic artist and the protagonist, Dr Harry Corbett. The name of the protagonist is unfortunately chosen for UK readers over the age, say, of 53. This is because for very many years there was on TV in England a popular children's comedian called Harry Corbett with his two glove puppets, Sooty and Sweep. But, I digress. The book was a pleasant read. I found myself wanting to keep track of it because there are always several books floating around the house, which is a good sign. It was competently written in boring old third person past tense. The author included enough frissons in the form of dangerous situations to keep the plot, which was straightforward enough, moving along at a decent pace. The book is 447 pages long, a good size; anywhere between 120K and 140K words, a typical airport-bookstall book. In real life I find the case of the UK doctor who murdered well over a hundred patients in real life far more horrifying than medical thrillers. In this particular plot, an evil 'inner circle' of medical practitioners conspire to murder several patients a week. The patients are of course, this being set in America, selected on the basis of the most costly to treat, go first.
Rating: Summary: Wow...what a ride! Review: My 3rd Michael Palmer selection and the best so far! Palmer is great at weaving together seemingly unrelated events. The ending is too much...I think it needs a movie screen, but I loved the rest of the book.
Rating: Summary: Initial opinion confirmed Review: My initial feelings were right...this is a damn good book. Highly recommended!!!
Rating: Summary: A REAL PAGE TURNER!!! Review: THIS HAS BEEN WITH PALMER'S PREVIOUS BOOK EXTREME MEASURES THE BEST MEDICAL THRILLER I HAVE READ IN A LONG TIME.THE PLOT IS GOOD AND IT BUILDS TO A CLIMAX WHICH YOU CAN'T PUT DOWN. THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY BELEIVABLE AND YOU REALLY GET INTO LIKE OR AS 'THE DOCTOR'S CASE DISLKE THEM.IF YOU LOVE MEDICAL/POLICE THRILLER THIS IS A MUST. THIS IS A SORT OF BOOK YOU HATE TO COMMENT IN ORDER THAT FUTURE READERS WONT HAVE ANY HINTS AND SPOIL ITS ENDING.IN CONCLUSION ,I HIGHLY SUGGEST THIS BOOK TO ALL AND PERSONALLY LOOK FORWARD TO READ HIS LATEST WHICH SHOULD NOT BE A LET DOWN. I SINCERELY HOPE IT IS MADE INTO A SUCCESSFUL MOVIE.HOWEVER,EXTREME MEASURES FILM VERSION OF THE BOOK HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BOOK AND YOU REALLY HATE IT WHEN A GOOD STORY IS TWISTED TO SUIT THE MOVIE DIRECTOR ETC!!!
Rating: Summary: The best suspense book written to this day!!! Review: This is a very good book. It is very hard not to turn the page once you get in to the book. This book is an allnighter, so be warned: if you plan on reading some of this book late you might want to drink some Jolt because you will not want to stop reading!! This is my favorite book because it keeps your interest and it has a good plot and suspense. When the book is over you want more. The ending is the only thing that could have been better in this book. It ends too fast!!! Michael Palmer has written some other good books but this is the best!!! I hope he or some other writer writes another book like this because these are the best kind of books!!!
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful and Intelligent Review: This is the first book I've read by Dr. Michael Palmer and I am very impressed. The characters seemed very real and complex. I especially liked the fact that Harry Corbett was both compassionate and complex. "The Doctor" scared me to death! The plot was fascinating and the writing was top notch. It was a real page turner. I can't wait to read the next book by Palmer. I highly recommend this book.
