Summary: Peter David's incredible writing style is borne out here!
Review: Peter David's four books of the with the new captain, Calhoun, are incredible. Having the four of them wrapped up in one book has to make for the best reading around!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: New faces, new personalities it's great to be aboard!
Review: Peter's choice of caracters is a good combination of interest stirred with anticipation. The new captain is his own man, but must now temper his actions because of Starfleet. How he faces confrontation is a blast. I am glad to be aboard with this new crew, thanks Peter David.

Summary: I must say it was a wonderful premise and an adequate story
Review: The ancient Thallonian Empire is no more, an entire sector of the galaxy collapses into disarray, chaos rules and unrest is rife. Dozens of planets formerly contained within the once great empire are faced with famine, planetary conflict, and worse. The Federation, recognising the tragic implications authorises Starfleet to assemble a new, hand-picked crew to help where it can and report what it finds in Sector 221-G the USS Excalibur captained by Xenexian Mackenzie Calhoun formerly M'k'n'zy of the Xenexian City district of Calhoun. The Crew includes Commander Shelby from the critically acclaimed ST NG double episode THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Doctor Selar from STNG episode THE SCHIZOID MAN and Ensign (now Lieutenant) Robin Lefler of ST NG episodes DARMOK and THE GAME. This mixture of crew from various episodes of ST NG episodes and from the fevered imaginings of author Peter David and his sundry ' Trek' novels are commendable but ill conceived. I'm. talking about a Brikar chief of security Zak Kebron a high density skinned species with traits and abilities more in keeping with a member of DC comics' THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES than starfleet's best and brightest. And what about a half woman half man Chief Engineer BURGOYNE 172 , a Hermat; echoes of a David Bowie seventies incarnation. Those two are ghastly creations. However I like Captain Calhoun he shows promise. A former rebel leader on his home planet Xenex (Purple eyed humanoid race) against the oppressive Danteri (humanoid, bronze skinned). A born warrior, a natural leader and a canny strategist. He's a risk taker like Kirk but he's other wise different from the other 'Trek' captains. Lt Mark McHenry, helmsman/ navigator is another original character I give the thumbs up to. A human mathematics genius with a photographic memory who's able to do navigational course calculations in his head faster than a computer. Lt Soleta; half Romulan, half Vulcan Science Officer is a Saavik clone down to having the professional recommendation of one Ambassador Spock. Si Cwan a displaced Thallonian prince turned ambassador to Sector 221-G (A red skinned humanoid race) also shows promise. Whilst I can appreciate the introduction of new races, (after all this is the creed of Star Trek). This saturation of new races and cultures bogs everything down and reduces the pace of the book. Danteri, Xenexians,Thallonians, Brikar and that's only half of them. I personally think that the introduction of new races ought to be limited to new encounters not as Federation members unless introduced as such in a genuine episode of Deep Space 9 or Voyager or the Trek movies. Another relative but trivial point: too many of the established Star Trek races have long since been neglected in favour of these quasi -federation species in books. And it'd be nice to see an Andorian Starfleet doctor, a Tellerite Chief Engineer. A Deltan Starfleet captain and a Bolian Security Chief in further 'Trek' media. Putting Klingons on the back-burner for a long while. Sorry folks can't say I really enjoyed STAR TREK : NEW FRONTIER but it was okay it gets a six out ten from me. That's only for bringing back Shelby, Lefler, Dr Selar and for the fresh 'new frontier' story-line. Originally a four parter, ( A definite con). there's just too many outlandish characters and situations: the great bird of the galaxy: a planet sized, phoenix type creature was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Read Diane Carey's Trek novels or William Shatner's Trek books;, flawed they may be but they at least know how to write proper 'Trek'. How about following cast for the movie version: CAPTAIN CALHOUN - ALEC BALDWIN. COMMANDER SHELBY - ELIZABETH DENNEHY. LT MARK McHENRY - MATT DAMON. DOCTOR SELAR - SUZIE PLAKSON. LT SOLETA - JOAN CHEN. LT ROBIN LEFLER - ASHLEY JUDD. LT ZAK KEBRON - SYLVESTER STALLONE. LT CMDR BURGOYNE 172 - LEONARDO DI CAPRIO. AMBASSADOR SI CWAN - BILLY ZANE.

Summary: This should be the basis of a new Trek TV series
Review: The combination of a Trekkie at work and me being a Peter David Hulk fan, was the reason I picked up this book and you don't even know how glad I was that I did. When I was reading this, I was either laughing out loud or anxious to read the next chapter. There are very few books out there that have me sitting at the end of my seat. I hope Rick Berman and his crew come to their senses and make this the new Star Trek series or atleast get Peter David to help write it.

Summary: A little unnecessary but enjoyable nevertheless.
Review: The new series written by Peter David features a whole new cast on a whole new ship in the same old time of the Next Gen and DS9. Although expertly written by admittedly the best Star Trek writer ever, one might feel that the creation of this new series is rather unnecessary. However, once DS9 goes off the air in America, the Star Trek people may want to look into the New Frontier for the creation of a new series. These books will serve as a two part premeire to the series.

Summary: ^-^ This is a very good book
Review: This book made me keep reading the books as they came out and i found it to be a very good series....especially later on! Its basically about the first four major events that happened to the U.S.S. Excaliber and her crew. I would recommend at least finishing it before making your choice on wether or not it is dumb. The very end of book for is the event that sets the rest of the books in motion!

Summary: this is a great book!
Review: this is an awesome book, about courage, skill, and brains. Captain Calhoun is an amazing character that makes you laugh, and makes your mouth drop in utter shock. Peter David did a wonderful job putting together a diverse crew, that always finds unique and shocking ways to solve problems. The thallonian space is a wonderful setting as well.

Summary: Star Trek New Frontier A New Ship, Crew & Mission
Review: This review is in reference to the turtleback, ISBN: 0671019783 and the four paperbacks.

Book One: House of Cards
Book Two: Into the Void
Book Three: The Two Front War
Book Four: Endgame

Peter David being one of the best Star Trek authors throughout its history is rewarded with his very own series. I can only imagine how honored he must've been to be able to create a whole new series. Tasked with this, he stepped up to the challenge and exceeded even his own high standards. One of the main things I love about the whole New Frontier series is that Peter David is allowed more freedom with what he can do in the New Frontier series as opposed to one of the other lines. The only question I have about the first four books of this series is why is the series started off with four small books, when this clearly could've been accomplished with two books or one large hardcover? Either way, who cares, they're all four of them absolutely fantastic!

Just like Star Trek The Next Generation's "Encounter at Farpoint," Deep Space Nine's "Emissary," Voyager's "Caretaker" and Enterprise's "Broken Bow," the four book set or the turtleback containing all four is Peter David's introduction to this great new series! "House of Cards" starts off with the introductions to several of the primary characters. It also includes some great cameo appearances as well. Captain Jean Luc Picard from the USS Stargazer inspiring M'k'n'zy of Calhoun (Mackenzie Calhoun) to join Starfleet. Lieutenant Soleta is introduced to the series through a chance meeting with Ambassador Spock, consequently saving her life. And finally, the ever dreary Admiral Jellico makes his first of many appearances. Commander Elizabeth Paula Shelby from STNG's "Best of Both Worlds" is given a first name, a nickname and a history with the new captain. Ensign Robin Lefler and Dr. Selar are brought over from STNG as well. Dr. Selar's introduction is extremely interesting.

New to the world of Star Trek we're introduced to: Captain Mackenzie Calhoun formerly M'k'n'zy of Calhoun from the planet Xenex. Captain Calhoun is certainly one of the best new characters added to the world of Star Trek. Zak Kebron, who is the USS Excalibur's Chief Security Officer. He is a Brikar, a race of beings who are basically built like large, moving landmasses. Lord and later, Ambassador Si Cwan, one of two remaining members of the ruling family of the Thallonian Empire, which has collapsed. Which is the cause for Starfleet sending the USS Excalibur into Sector 221-G. Commander Burgoyne 172, the Excalibur's Chief Engineer. Burgoyne is a Hermat, which is a species where each individual is pretty much made up of both sides of the battle of the sexes. An particularly interesting character to say the least. Lieutenant Mark McHenry, the Excalibur's primary helmsmen, an exceedingly intelligent and of course, eccentric human.

Mix all of these extremely interesting characters together with Peter David's well thought out villains and what we have here is an enormously great line of Star Trek novels. The only downside, they are more or less in episodic format and have a tendency to end with To be continued...., and they're not a regular line coming out with several per year. The upside, with one exception, they typically come out two or three books at a time. If you purchase the turtleback containing all four stories, it includes a Star Trek New Frontier Minipedia. Overall this is a great series that will make a fine addition to your Star Trek collection!
