Rating: Summary: Report from Engine Co. 82 Review: The quintessential firefighting novel. Dennis Smith coveys the hardships and excitment of working the South Bronx for FDNY during "the war years" of the 1970's. The first and still the best of the firefighting genre.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: This book is absolutely amazing. I started reading it because I was down to the deadline on choosing a book for a school report and now I'm sure I had the best book in the class. Smith takes you into the depths of a huge fire where you can actually feel the heat and choke on the smoke and then the next moment makes you feel his frustration when he takes you to his tenth malicious false alarm of the night. I have a whole new respect for the firefighters in my community and thank God that I have them. Not untill I read this book did I fully understand exactly what firefighters do. I am totally and compleatly amazed!
Rating: Summary: Still remembered after first reading it in early 70's Review: This book was an inspiration to me and portrayed the sometimes harsh realties of urban fire fighting in the 1970's. Almost 20 years after reading it, I had my wife read it and she too thought highly of the book. I still have the original copy with the firefighter sitting on top of an engine by a deluge gun.

Rating: Summary: Essential Reading for all firefighters Review: This book was recommended to me by a fellow firefighter in my company, and it took me only one day to read. Each chapter just lures you deeper and deeper into Dennis Smith's world and what it was to be a firefighter at Engine Comapny 82. This book should be required reading for all firefighters and those who aspire to be one of America's Bravest. He tells it like it is, with no holding back. Brotherhood, bravery, anguish, and wicked humor awaits.

A must read for anyone who wants to know traditions and the way firefighting takes place in the city. Every firefighter should read and own this book.

Rating: Summary: An outstanding look at the career of firefighting Review: This book, when I first read it in the 70's as a kid, cemented my desire to be a firefighter. It went past the gleaming paint and chrome and really showed me the grit of the job; that it wasn't always the glorious one I had envisioned but more of a thankless one. Dennis Smith's vivid imagery makes you feel like you're in the battle right there with his company. It also shows the toll that firefighting takes on it's participants, the physical as well as the emotional scars the job leaves. Smith takes you through his personal life, discussing his humble childhood and the effect his career has on his adult life. All in all, a wonderful story that grabs you at the beginning and doesn't let go until the last page.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Book Review: This is a fantastic book that you get rapped up in. When I started to read this book I could not put it down, and never could. It shows what life is like being a firefighter, you fell like your there with the firefighters. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys firefighter books.
