Rating: Summary: A romantic masterpiece Review: I enjoyed the book. I finished "An Ocean Apart" in 48 hours. It was a different twist in a romance novel for a man to be a victim of lifes foibles. I liked David being a hero -- superman. Why not read a book where the main character is there to save the day, especially after personal tragedy followed by self doubts and insecurities. I read to escape and relax so thanks Robin Pilcher for a fresh and interesting "read".
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment that this is his first book...MORE! Review: I enjoyed this on audio cassette as I traveled from son's wedding in Memphis, TN to my home in New Mexico. Long trips have ceased to be fun, but this form of enjoying a book is most helpful. This was a most enjoyable story; very well written with characters that blossomed with each adventure or obstacle. Please let Mr. Robin know that we want more......
Rating: Summary: Good story but a little unbelievable Review: I have never read a more moving and touching book. We have all read many books that brings tears to our eyes. This is the first book I have read that tells a sad, yet Love Story from a male's point of view. The story of David is the most moving and emotional story that I have read in a very long time. I purchased this book as a Discount item and was overwhelmed at how moving it was. I was unable to put the book down and eagerly await Robin's next book due to come out in January 2002. Robin made the character of David come alive and everyone who reads this book will want to find someone just like David.
Rating: Summary: Praise for Robin Pilcher Review: I have never read a more moving and touching book. We have all read many books that brings tears to our eyes. Rating: Summary: An Ocean Apart Review: I have read all of Rosamund Pilcher's book, so I quite frankly did buy the book because Robin is her son. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I had some problems with it. Sometimes the language was a bit self-conscious and stilted; for example, when the doctor's wife said something "caringly," I winced. It sounded a bit syrupy. Also, I noticed the American characters often used words and phrasings that were much more British than American, which I think a good editor could have caught. The final problem I had was that the characters needed much more dimension. Rachel was an absolute saint and hard act to follow, and David was saved from sainthood because of his wallowing in self-pity and because he couldn't barbecue worth a darn! Having said all that, I will say that I read it from cover to cover, and once I was well into it, was interested enough in what happened that I was impatient to get back to it when called away. So he obviously has a gift; it just needs to be honed a bit.
Rating: Summary: I needed this refreshing read.... Review: I haven't read anything by his mother, so you won't find any unfair comparisons here. All I know is that it had been awhile since I had a good fictional read, and this one was extremely satisfying. It was refreshing to be introduced to a young man who was so deeply in love with his life partner. I wondered what it was going to take to snap him out of his self-absorbtion. So what if it was a needy young boy, emotionally abandoned by his 2-career parents? Did this bother some of our guilt-ridden readers? So what if several coincidences were somewhat contrived? I enjoyed every page, and was sorry to reach the last one. I love happy endings!
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming Review: I just finished reading An Ocean Apart and I loved it. It has been a long time since I finished a book with a longing to read more about the characters' lives. The relationship between David and Jennifer was not forced. And the relationship that David had with both his children and Benji was so descriptive that I felt like a part of the family. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to feel good.
Rating: Summary: Good story but a little unbelievable Review: I just finished reading An Ocean Apart. Mr. Pilcher is a good story teller, but leans too much toward the unbelievable. Except for losing the love of his life, the main charachter, was touched with an incredibly charmed life. He was just too perfect to be true. In less than two weeks he manages to move to another country, find a job, a rent-free house in a very nice neighborhood, a (free) car, a dog, make several close friends, solve all the problems of a teenage boy, and find another love of his life. The biggest problem of the book was the offensive language. I doubt I will read another one of his books, for this reason alone.
Rating: Summary: An Ocean Apart Review: I really enjoyed the book! I got into it more after the first few chapters. Pilcher sets his the stage for the story before really taking off with the main theme, so you need to be little bit patient as he sets the tone. Emotions are expressed VERY well as you move through the story, and you can feel for the characters and their happenings throughout the book. As I read, I could form pictures in my mind of the background scenes and the characters which were written with wonderful descriptions and scenes.
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment! Review: I should have known -- the fact that Rosemunde Pilcher's name is always used in conjunction with her son's book is a definite clue that the publisher wasn't sure he could hold his own. I suspect if his name had been Bilcher instead of Pilcher, the book wouldn't have been published or certainly not sold as well. This story is so predictable. A situation presents itself and in the next few paragraphs, there's the solution! And he definitely didn't get American speech. Reading this book reminded me of watching the videa of "Coming Home." In the book, Rosemunde Pilcher weaves a wonderful story with many varied characters. When I saw the video, the story seems shallow and insipid because so many characters were left out and so much of the story line changed. "An Ocean Apart" is shallow and insipid, too. In my opinion, Robin should have stuck to his day job!
