Rating: Summary: let the adventure begin Review: "But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray." (Luke 5:16) This life is an adventure. There is no higher calling within this adventure than following in the footsteps of the master--Jesus the Christ. Prayer is one of the main paths that Jesus traveled during his first stay here on earth...Richard Foster's masterpiece "Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home" is like a grizzled old tour guide to help lead us in the life of prayer. Foster devotes each chapter to a different kind of prayer...examining each one like the facets of a precious jewel. Foster's advice is both insightful and solid. This book is to prayer what Foster's "Celebration of Discipline" was to the spiritual disciplines. Both are masterpieces. I give "Prayer" my highest recommendation.

Rating: Summary: Keen insight into types and effects of prayer on our lives Review: Foster has written an amazing eye-opener on the world of prayer. It is not just another dry listing of different types or methods of prayer, but is instead a biography of love's laguage between the Creator and the created; Of how one draws ever closer to the Lover of our souls, and how that deepening communication effects everything else that we do. It can be seen that Foster draws from a lifetime of struggle, searching, and ultimate victory through a divine loving grace. But more than anything else, what is seen is a lifetime of listening to the Father's voice, and responding to the Spirit's call. The Book Will help anyone seeking a fuller dimension in their prayers, as well as a more harmonious relationship with God, themselves, and others.
Rating: Summary: Prayer From the Heart Review: Foster is a master of drawing together all the strengths of the Christian tradition for his readers to benefit from. This book transcends denominationalism--it is a gift to the entire body of Christ. It is a book written from Foster's heart. "Prayer" is a book that demands to be more than read. It needs to be prayed through, meditated on, and re-read. Once again Foster writes with clarity, conviction, and winsomeness. Foster does not merely talk of prayer in this book. Each page seeps with insights that can only come by living a life of prayer. His layout of the book has a rhythum and seemless flow to it. The different descriptions of prayer greatly helped me to have a deeper understanding of the different kinds of approaches we have to God in prayer. Foster's book has invigorated me to hunger for the Holy more and more in my life.
Rating: Summary: TRANQUIL, INFORMATIVE LISTEN Review: Foster tells listeners "God has graciously allowed me to catch a glimpse into his heart" and that "The heart of God is an open wound of love." God aches over our distance, weeps over our obsessions, and longs for our presences. Moreover, God wants to relieve us of aggression, frustration and fear and replace it with security and peace. Foster's goal is to help believers with lessons on prayer. Foster tells us we avoid prayer because we are naturally prideful and hardhearted. In addition, when we do desire prayer, we first want to put our life in order. That's why God gave us prayer, he explains. Constant prayer - the beginner's prayer, the simplest prayer, the breath prayer, etc. - will put our lives in order and bring us "back to that which we were created for." Foster explains prayer and guides those who pray. Written for both the novice and experienced Christian, he talks about the prayer of adoration and rest, sacramental prayer, meditation and contemplation. In expressing God and his desire, the author uses common examples and backs his teachings with scripture. The book Prayer was published in 1992. This audio version contains chapters 1, 2, 11, 13, 15, 18, 21 of that version. Brenda @ MyShelf.Com
Rating: Summary: My only review Review: I am an avid reader; but, this is the only book I have ever felt so strongly about that I wanted to express my opinion in a review. I realize that a person's reaction to any book says as much about the reader as it does the book. But I cannot imagine anyone who is genuinely interested in the topic of prayer not feeling satisfied that they got a great exchange for their time and money in this book. It helped me tremendously.
Rating: Summary: A great companion for a life of prayer Review: I love Foster's books and this is my favorite. It's a walk through various types of prayer, not exhaustive of course but wide-ranging. Foster's pattern here is to describe a type of prayer, give biblical and historical perspective on it, some examples (often both personal and profound), and then suggest practical steps for integrating that type of prayer into your life. The three general categories he groups these into correspond to the categories in Celebration of the Discipline: looking inward, looking upward to God, and looking outward in service to others. Emphasis is given to meditation and contemplation, and that is where Foster shines the most. One of the things that I love about his writing is that he can be so refreshing. There are ideas in his works that I've not read anywhere else, yet which resound with wisdom and which recall forgotten bits of spiritual history. He is also practical- an advocate that prayer begins where you live, in the small and everyday things. Some people will object to his inclusion of "charismatic" themes. There is no magic bullet when it comes to prayer, but this is a wonderful guide and companion for a journey we all must take if we are to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. It will enrich your dialogue with God.
Rating: Summary: Not entirely Scripturally accurate Review: I ordered this book based upon the reviews of other readers, but I quickly discovered that it was not everything I had been led to believe. The book had some good points and nice concepts, but I found a number of instances in which I believe the book was not consistent with Scripture, in my opinion. This could possibly be attributed to the fact that the author is a Quaker, a group in which many of the followers openly deny the scriptures as our final authority for conduct and doctrine. Please understand that I am not accusing Mr. Foster of such beliefs, nor am I arrogant or ignorant enough to think that my denomination is the only one with correct doctrine. But I was not comfortable with many things in this book and would therefore be hesitant to give it a positive recommendation.
Rating: Summary: Above all this book is honest Review: I was lured to this book after reading Foster's book Celebration of Discipline. His style is intimate and descriptive, but above all else it is honest. The content of this book could have been written from a theological or academic standpoint. Indeed Foster masterfully included enough references and allusions to other great works to take up a large portion of the back pages for bibliography, and each truth he expresses stands firm on scripture. The content is what makes this book essential. The style is what makes it a joy to read, and its pure honesty is what makes you want to apply it to your life.
Rating: Summary: Want to Learn How to Pray? Review: If you are stuck with the same old ways of praying and feel that there might just be more to prayer than what you were taught as a child, this is the book for you. Each chapter presents a different way of praying and each is beautifully "illustrated" with spiritual examples. Foster's love of God shines through this book and it is a joy to read. The book won't take you deeply into each way of praying, but it has given me many new ways of praying that I never considered. Highly recommended.
