Rating: Summary: makes me want to holler (makes you want to holler) Review: For my school one of the required readings was Makes Me Want To Holler. I thought it was a good book but felt it was injust and racist towards whites, even if he did do the things he said he did towards whites. There are somethings that need to be kept to yourself this is one of them times. I think he is a very good writer and his book keeps you interested in what he has to say but by the same token I felt offended towards the ideas he had (has) towards white people. I'm white and can relate to some of the things he was saying and a few things he did or went through I couldn't relate to but still read on. Overall it was a good book and I would recommend it to my friends and anyone looking for a good book to read.
Rating: Summary: It reminds me of my youth and my life now Review: I felt as though some of my life was written in his book. Learning how to treat girls as a boy, and trying to learning how to treat women as a man. He help me look back at myself and showed me how to improve in my future relationships. I loved the book. It was referred to me by other black men I work with. I think that every man should read this book to help see themselves in their past to improve their future. I could as far as saying " Its' a million man march on paper." I hope I can obtain his type of passion in my writing. I have used it as a tool for getting inspiration.
Rating: Summary: Best Book I have Ever Read Review: This is truely a masterpiece. I had no idea, whatsoever, what African Americans have gone through. I myself am a minority, yet I have not dealt with nowhere near as much pain and suffering as described in this book. A must read!!!
Rating: Summary: It should be suggested reading for every young black man Review: I truely loved the book. It is well written and easy to read. It gives the readers a better understanding of the plight of most young black men in America. I passed the book on to my son and I also brought a copy for my 14 year old grandson to read. Not only men, but women should read "Makes me wanna Holler" to give them (us) a better understanding of black men and how they feel, and moveover what they have to deal with on a daily basis. I love you Nathan McCall for sharing yourself with us (the readers). Please give us more...
Rating: Summary: Not badly written, but nothing special Review: Another book on what it's like to be black? Joy. As if there weren't enough on the topic. As if one person can speak for an entire race. The writing was OK and McCall's story has been a somewhat interesting one - it's just that he seems to assume the situation of all other black folks in America has been the same as his own. Pompous might be the word I'm looking for in describing this mindset. Albert Murray made this criticism years ago which the mostly white book reviewers who praise this kind of trash ignore: "This whole thing about somebody revealing what it is really like to be black has long since gotten out of hand anyway. Not even the autobiography of Sigmund Freud reveals what it is really like to be Jewish, for instance...does anybody actually believe that, say, Mary McCarthy reveals what it really is like to be a U.S. white woman, or even a Vassar girl?" Stop trying to be a spokesman for all of black America and your writing would come out alot better, Mr. McCall.
Rating: Summary: Portsmouth, Va is my hometown, too. Review: Though McCall is nearly 20 years older than me, the story hit me hard. I knew of some of the neighborhoods in the book but did not live in them. It didn't matter. The book can hit you hard if you live in Alaska or Virginia. The book scares you and makes you sad and happy all at once. It could not have been more clear or well-thought out. I have read it 3 times. You should, too.
Rating: Summary: One of the most greastest books that I have ever read. Review: Nathan McCall is a fabulous writer, and this book touched my heart completey. It is a book about his life and the troubles that he has gone through. It made me see that the life that I was living was a hard one and leads you to trouble. I can say that i found it hard to change my life around just like he did. I am proud for the changes that I made and he made me have a new perspective on life. I enjoyed the book and I have read it over 5 times already . I reccommend this book to all teens who have troubled lives. It is an excellent book!
Rating: Summary: Strong and Powerful thats all I need to say Review: I was 17 years old when I read this book, and it touched me like never before. People hear about these things that happen in the hood, and most experience these things by living in the hood and know how hard it is to grow up there I know "been there done that". This book inspired me so much that now I'm 20 and a volunteer at the Boys and Girls club, helping my young sisters and brothers to stay off the street and out of trouble showing them why it is so important for them to stay in school. Not all understand but I am happy to say that most of them do, I encourage everyone to read this book. I have never heard of this guy before,my brother was reading this and I looked overd it then started to read he still don't know where his book is. Keep up the good work brother!"Peace and much Love"
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL AND VERY INSIGHTFUL!!! Review: I read this book a few years ago and throughly enjoyed it. I used this book in my 11th grade English class and the results were astounding. My students became very involved. In fact, some of my students related to the book so well that the turned in homework for the first time!!! (smile). It was also amazing to see students reading this book during "their" time. The book produced great discussions. Not only did they learn Nathan's story, but the were exposed to poetry and songs that have deep meanings. We were able to develop great lesssons to compliment the content of the book. I highly recommend this book to any and everyone!!
Rating: Summary: Mr. McCall is the only author I've ever written a letter to. Review: After reading this book three years ago, I wrote Mr. McCall a letter. As a young, white woman, it really helped me to grasp what people different from me deal with in this country. I've since recommended it to everyone I've ever had opportunity to. Read this!
