Rating: Summary: Not his best. Review: A little slower than I have come to expect. Good, but not great. Still better than many other authors' best work.
Rating: Summary: look elsewhere Review: If you've never read Hiassen before, I urge you to start with an older book--Skin Tight, for example. This book feels phoned in. The characters are awful stereotypes instead of the quirky and hilarious send-ups that Hiassen is capable of. The good news: Hiassen is getting back on track with his latest, Sick Puppy. I'd say Lucky You is the worst of the handful of Hiassen books I've read.
Rating: Summary: Lucky Carl Review: Being a huge Carl Hiaassen fan, I could not wait for "Lucky You" to come out. The previous novel "Stormy Weather" was showing a little lack of imagination for Hiaasen, and I was hoping he would get it back."Lucky You" hits most of the times but misses a few cylinders in the long run. The idea of two winning lotto tickets and one winner not happy that they must share, who decide to steal the other ticket from a single African American women. The bad guys once again are the best written characters in the book. Hiaasen does dive into looney topics of South Florida again, mainly looking at christanity taken to extremes. Hiaasen is still the best at the genre, he may be slipping a little but there is nothing in this book to make you stay away. Carl is lucky that this is not his first book, we all can say that he may be in a rut, but will come out of it. Looking forward to "Sick Puppy".
Rating: Summary: "Jesus Willy" that was a great book. Review: "Lucky You" was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. After reading a long line of frivolous yet heart warming romance novels, it was good to read something so entertaining and free spirited. Bode and Chub's crazy beliefs and redneck antics had me laughing out loud. Then there was the pairing of Miss JoyLayne and Tom. What a treat it was to see these two get together. Thank you Mr. Hiaasen for writing such a wonderfully wacky story.
Rating: Summary: "Jesus Willy " that was a great book! Review: "Lucky You" was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. After ready a long line of frivolous yet heart warming romance novels, it was good to read something more cleverly written. I have to say there were times when Chub and Bode had me laughing out loud with their redneck belief and crazy antics. Then there's Miss JoLayne and Tom, two unlikely people pairing up. What a treat it was to see these people get together. Mr. Hiaasen is a jem of a writer, thanks for the belly laughs...
Rating: Summary: Disappointing but worth reading Review: The two bad guys in this novel are very well described but the black lottery winner and black highway patrolmen are not believable. He pokes fun at small Florida towns, some of which is accurate and some is run into the ground. Personally, this is the least enjoyable of his novels, but is still funny in many places. Take a chance.
Rating: Summary: Downhill slide ? Review: As with so many authors, Mr. Hiaason's work has sadly weakened over time. Compared to the inventive characters and story lines found in Strip Tease, Double Whammy and Stormy Weather, Lucky You is NOT FUNNY. Strongly suggest that Mr. Hiaason returns to his original formula of "Skink" as the sub protagonist, surrounded by "Chemo-esque" type antagonists - who display new and exciting uses for - say - chum making machines!
Rating: Summary: Lots of f un! Review: This was my first book by Hiaasen, and I was very satisfied with it. It is full of great characters, and unique, funny situations. Some people have complained about the material - the main plot centers on rascism, and militias. However, they are missing the point that those characters promoting the rascism are made out to be complete idiots with the IQ of a baked potato. The humor comes from poking fun at these guys, not from the material itself. My only problem was that while the story was fast paced, the subplots were overused. While they were interesting, they should have been cut back by about a third because the book ends up dragging on a bit too long, with the ending somewhat anti-climatic. But it is still very good, and highly recommended for an enjoyable read with lots of laughs.
Rating: Summary: HILARIOUS! Review: What a parody! If this is the worst of Carl's then I can't wait to read his other books. To those who say it has "smirking racism", it is about REDNECKS afterall. To those saying the characters are "unbelievable", take a good look at your fellow Americans. I guess some like to think that the world is a nice & perfect place.
Rating: Summary: Not that funny Review: Carl Hiaase and Ed Asner try hard. Hiaasen's novel, which is about (I think) lotto winners, religious scam artists, white supremacists, and other Florida loonies, has its humorous moments. However, it mostly drags on towards a disappointing conclusion. Asner does well with his various growling accents, but the material could be a lot better.
