Rating: Summary: A light, easy read -- but not profound Review: Normally, when one views a movie based on a book, one is struck by how much of the book was lost. In this case, having seen the film first, I was struck by how little the book added to the movie. "Wonder Boys" is an easy read, and it's fun, and it does add some material to the movie, but it doesn't really seem to have anything important to say.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: Wonder Boys is one of the best books I have everread. Alcoholic, drug addicted English professors are not a group Iwould expect to have very much in common with. But this is a book about writers, about people who love words, and that is why I loved it. Michael Chabon expertly crafts his sentences; he is a poet. His characters are complete, real human beings who step off the page and tell their story. I love this book, and every single one of these quirky characters. It is the truest book I have read in along time.
Rating: Summary: oh my Review: I'm only to page 28 and I already feel like swan diving off the roof; he's that good. haven't seen the film yet but I hope he is making pots of money off its release. what a skillful and brilliant novelist. you must read this book immediately.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ Review: THE BOOK WAS GREAT AND SO WAS THE MOVIE. THE STORY IS SO MOVING AND I READ IT THREE TIMES IN A ROW I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH
Rating: Summary: "It's No Wonder!" Review: I had been searching for a novel that I could completely fall head first into. Then, I found Chabon's Wonder Boys. Chabon writes with such detail and care with his characters. It is hard to not want to join the aging writer/teacher Grady Tripp, his troubled student James Leer, and his maniacal editor Terry Crabtree on their adventurous weekend together. The novel is wonderfully written, painting a detailed picture of what people look for and strive to achieve in the often-times bewildering and soul-wrenching thing we call life. Grady Tripp is one of the most carefully and painstakingly written characters to come along in quite some time. The honesty with which Chabon creates his protagonist is humourous, profound, and often times, truly full of longing. Chabon does a masterful job of inviting the reader into this bizarre world he has created. It is enticing, full of experiences paralled to Keruoac and his buddies, and at the same time, full of longing for something greater than what we have grown accustomed to. If anyone out there, is searching amist the sea of novels, looking for something to capture their attention completely, look no further than Wonder Boys. It is a marvellous work that lingers long after the final page has been read, leaking into the important thing you call your life.
Rating: Summary: Very Enjoyable! Review: This book is very unique in its style. One of the many things I enjoyed about the book was that the characters were real. They were human, and flawed just like everybody, but as flawed as they were, they were also endearing. This story also gets to the heart of what its like to be a writer.
Rating: Summary: Wonder-ful! Review: I thought this was a great book. I don't know what all the revewiers are talking about with regard to wrtiing classes, and maybe Chabon's been to one too many and all that. Personally, I've never been to one, but I love to read and this was a really interesting book. I like new books by younger writers and Chabon -- plus Brauner's Love Songs of the Tone-Deaf -- really knows how to make the words on the page sing. His descriptions are incredibly entertaining and interesting and fun. I highly recommend both Chabon and Brauner to all you readers out there!
Rating: Summary: Great book for and about writers. Review: I think if you're an aspiring writer this book will speak to you. This book is wonderfuly descriptive and full of images that stay with you long after you put it down. For me, it almost perfectly describes the writing process. Great book.
Rating: Summary: a funny story about the bungling life of an ordinary guy Review: After seeing the movie, I felt compelled to read the book. I had enjoyed the film, but found the book absolutely wonderful! The writing style is skillfully ordinary, making it sound like Grady is just another guy you might meet on the street; yet it is a wonderful blend of sarcasm, humor, and the helpless feeling people often get on which way to turn next. Grady, as the main character, is very well developed. You, as the reader, can understand and sympathize with him entirely. Plus, the side characters are also well-written; as you read, you can almost picture the brilliant loner James, or the the pretty young writer Hannah. The interactions between all the characters are believable, and you don't really know until the very end how they will all end up.
Rating: Summary: a delightful story about misery Review: I was assigned this novel by my writing class & would not have read it if it wasn't an assignment. Chabon is a definite poet. His strong command of the English language & his wonderful turns of phrase made this one of the most enjoyable novels I've read in a long time. It's no "Wonder" his novel became a movie.
