Rating: Summary: Forced Freedom Review: All of Follett's books are good (I haven't read Hammer:)) It seemed like Follett tried to match the recipe from Pillars but it didn't work. Aa little romance is good but this was too much for me. The story lacked punch.
Rating: Summary: Different Review: I would have liked to give this book three and a half stars, but that option was not available.A Place Calles Freedom follows the converging lives of Mack McAsh, a Scottish coal worker who seems to always irritate the wrong people, and Lizze Hallim, a igh born lady who would prefer to act like a man. It is a tried and true fomula, and I enjoyed this book immensely, despite its predicatable plot. I particularly liked the introduction to the book, and the way that the story was introduced. I mainly gave this book three stars because it is very different from the other Ken Follett books that I have read. I've read Pillars of the Earth, a sweeping intricate novel, and Night Over Water, which I thought had an interesting an enjoyable plot. I knew how this book was going to end before it even started. The characters are fairly stereotypical. There are scenes that are reminiscent of a steamy romance novel. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it's nothing to write home about.
Rating: Summary: A good reminder of the value of freedom Review: Follett has written a very interesting study of freedom and non-freedom. He reminds us vividly that freedom is much more than the right to vote. By starting with Scottish coalminers who were enslaved to the mine owners if they worked a year and a day in the mines and dramatically communicating the human costs of subservience and the brutalizing aspects of power over others he carries the reader into a variety of experiences far more interesting and thought provoking than the traditional revolutionary era novel. For anyone who would like to think about the nature and value of freedom and the importance of the rule of law, private property and basic human dignity this is an interesting novel that will hold your attention.
Rating: Summary: A Great Story Review: As with many of Ken Follett's other novels A Place Called Freedom does an excellent job of creating a realistic setting where the interests of family, business, and government collide in a moment of history. With this backdrop and a very rapid pace, the constant struggle for freedom, family and justice by the main character reveals many aspects of the human character both good and evil that make for a wonderful story worthy of attention.
Rating: Summary: another good book from follett Review: this book is another winner by a great aothor.it has good characters that are real and likeable. its not as great as pillars of the earth or a dangerous fortune, but its very enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: Average Follett Review: I thoroughly enjoyed Dangerous Forutnue and hoped this book would have the same effect. It doesn't quite reach that level, but still is a captivating story. The picture of lower class life in Eighteenth Century England is a compelling backdrop for a good story. The ending seemed a little too fantastic (reminded me of a Robert Ludlum finish) in that all the loose ends were brought to a successful conclusion for the star crossed lovers. But on the whole, I would recommend this to any who have enjoyed Follett's previous work.
Rating: Summary: DISAPPOINTING Review: I found this book to be simple, silly, and predictable. A pillar it is not.
Rating: Summary: Boring...! Review: This novels is very poorly written. While I enjoyed the Pillars of the Earth, this story is so disappointing. Haven't you ever noticed how the plot of his novel is very much similar to the movie "Far and Away"?
Rating: Summary: This IS NOT Pillars of the Earth Review: This book is more like a mass market Romance novel--written by a man! It was rather hard to believe that the same person who wrote the lengthy and intricate Pillars of the Earth, wrote this nice piece of fluff. It's not a bad book. But it is predicatable and for the voracious reader it does not cover any new ground. I am just glad that it was such a quick read. I wouldn't have wanted to spend a lot of time on this book.
Rating: Summary: The Best Read Ever Review: The book called "A Place Called Freedom" is not a book for the faint of heart. The book can tear the breath away. The read is easy to follow. If that makes you stop reading it then how about the two excapes, one attempted murders, a murder, three killings, a cole worker gone bad, one strike, meny love scenes, and the lust of two people that live a life that cant be with the wealthy.
