Rating: Summary: Fight for your ideas Review: It is a story to relax and read, is not the best of Ken Follet but is not a bad story, with this book you will learn how some people want their freedom at any price and some people just want to be or do what other people say, no matter if it is a man or a woman.
Rating: Summary: The Book That Never Ends Review: I am a bit disappointed in the author after reading this book. I think he was trying to build on the success that he had with Pillars of the Earth but this book falls far short of that classic. This book is more like a [$] mass-market teen-age Romance novel. There is nothing new hear except maybe the name, the plot is so predictable it is sad coming from such a good author. I knew how this book was going to end before it even started. He has written much better books, I would stay away from this book unless you are looking for a long love story.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and exciting Review: What a very fine writer Ken Follett is! Having read "The eye of the needle" many years ago, and more recently, "Pillars of the earth" and enjoyed them both very much,I just finished reading "A place called freedom".It took only 2 days as I couldn't put it down and for 2 nights, read into the small hours. An indentured Scottish coal miner, Mack McAsh, tries to force the hand of the mine owner into treating the down trodden miners with compassion and fairness. He is railroaded by the system and tranported as a convict to Virginia. This is a tale of a mans inhuman treatment and his fight fot freedom in the New World. It's a great read, well written, exciting and unputdownable. It could well have been made into an actioner movie
Rating: Summary: A place called freedom, by Ken Follett Review: A great novel wich I eated in half weekend, even if I normally take few weeks to read such a book. As I'm Italian and live in another country I could much relate to emotions, like "leaving something behind" and such. Similarity to "Far and Away"? I don't know, but I'm surprise no body made a movie out of this one. After all, a place called freedom, is in all our spirit. A great travel through history and emotions, love and romance, high and low, but above all... persistence. Thank you Mr. Follett
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This book was the most enjoyable book I have read all year. Trying to explain the plot to a person who has not read it, would almost make it sound boring. It is the masterful and mezmorizing way the Follett writes that keeps my attention. Yes it is a formula book, but so what? If you want a good read with a clear cut, hero, heroine & Villian, this is the book. I LOVED IT
Rating: Summary: magician tells storie Review: I'm a dutch reader who likes to read english sometimes. It's usually quite difficult to keep in touch with a book of that size, especially when you're reading a foreign language. "A place called freedom" keeps me reading and gives me the opportunity to see the whole story as if it was a movie. I think only a magician can do this. Follet puts a spell on me and brings me to historical Scotland and the States. Wonderful, thanks !!
Rating: Summary: Lizzie Put It Best Review: RE: AUDIO TAPE VERSION. I love Follett - when he gives his best effort that is - but this novel smells like quick paycheck. Forgettable characters and predictable action leave the reader with the same response that heroine Lizzie has to her wedding night: Is that all there is? The weak title should have been a clue that this would be a second-rate effort. For a much more compelling period piece from Follett, try the excellent "A Dangerous Fortune".
Rating: Summary: Could Ken Follett really have written this book? Review: I generally LOVE Ken Follett books for their content, history and thorough descriptions of inviting stories. Thought I had picked up a Danielle Steele novel. Very predictable!! The only thing that was left out was the color of Mack's eyes. The plot was there, but it was not one of Ken's better books. Lizzie came across as a headstrong, too independent, spoiled, rich kid and Mack as her ever-faithful, always there (even in the strangest places), ridiculous hero. Makes for a quick read, but unfortunately not one that is memorable.
Rating: Summary: Another's work under the name of Follett? Review: At best this is a Harlequin romance .... it's hard to believe that Ken Follett wrote such trash. Although the historical aspects were interesting, the story was very predictable.
Rating: Summary: Intoxicating Review: I have also read The Third Twin and A Dangerous Fortune by Follett, but neither can hold a candle to this masterpiece. Follett is one of the best at developing characters and bringing the reader into the setting. His ability to weave a captivating story together with a time in history makes for a powerful and educational experience, and having a villain to hate always helps. It is definitely in my top five all-time reads.
