Rating: Summary: Do Not Read This on a Plane Review: HILARIOUS...As irreverent as I had hoped. Some old stuff...some new stuff, but still PROFOUNDLY funny. I was reading this on a plane and thoroughly embarassed myself by laughing hysterically -- probably a bit too loud. I tried not to, I really did. Gratefully, he has included material to offend most everyone.
Rating: Summary: Excellent material - but not what I expected Review: If you are looking for a book that gets inside Georege's head forget it. This is a printed version of his stand up routine for the last several years. I laughed plenty hard but it was not what I was hoping for.
Rating: Summary: laugh out loud Review: if you want a book that talks about real life sitations, and just makes you laugh out loud, this is the book. If you watch and listen to all of George Carlins shows, and cds, then he does reiterate some of his old jokes in this book. The first couple of pages had me laughing so hard, I had to put the book down so I didn't wake anyone up. I do recommend that everyone read this.
Rating: Summary: Very funny Review: I love George Carlin, I mean how can you not love someobdy that hates everything. Carlin can piss off anybody, he even pisses me off at times, but I'm laughing all the way. Truthfully only about 3% of what Carlin says pisses me off, but it doesn't matter, he is still the best comedian around. He doesn't back down, I've seen most of his HBO specials and he has gotten more aggressive over the years, but I digress. The book is super funny, since I'm pretty familar with Carlin's material (I've been a fan since I was 9 years old) about half of the material in the book was just stuff from his acts. That is to be expected, but brain droppings seemed less familar to me. Don't get me wrong I think everybody should buy this book. Plenty of people will get pissed off, but most of them will laugh. The child stuff is the best. Carlin is a national treasure
Rating: Summary: Still a little too much repeated stuff Review: Very funny man! My only problem is that he includes many jokes from Jammin' In New York, Back In Town and earlier ones. I do think he is a man that I would love to have his thinking...except for the drugs.I will say that somethings I hear him writing are funnier than when I 'hear' him say it. You have to have a creative imagination. Like his part on telling golf players to "pick the f---ing ball up! You're lucky you found the f---ing thing! Put in your pocket and go home." You have to be able to picture George or someone on a golf course telling some old, uppity businessman snobbily telling Carlin to get out of his way, while Carlin tells him a thing or two. Get it? I would rather be a skeptic like George than blindly follow a lot of the BS that the politicians, Religious Organizations and celebrities tell us. The reason people find him offensive is that they can't think past his fowl language. Sure I am offended by some of the jokes he says about the things I do, but he gets you to think on your own. The only reason he cusses is to add power. Words are power. It's like what Henry Ford once said, "Thinking is the Hardest work there is. That's why so few people do it."
Rating: Summary: Be warned Review: --I have to warn non-Carlin fans (or people that havent heard of him) be warned George offends alot of people, if you are easily offended then dont buy this book, don't even read it! dont borrow a copy, or glance at it in a store if you think you will be offended. If you DONT like George Carlin, dont read this book, dont protest him, In my opinion he is an insanely funny commedian and he has just as much right to write this book as anyone else. We live in a free country, he has the right to free speech! if you dont like George Carlin than leave him alone! Dont read his books, Dont buy his CDS!-- Now the review: George speaks his peace abought everything from Napalm to Silly Putty (Hence the title) This book is pure Genius!! Combine one of the greatest minds of our time, with the grit grime and dirt of modern society, and the anger and general discomfort of an angry old man and you get George Carlin His random style is a perfect blend of zany humor with a wit forged of tempered steel. Here is a sample reading of some of his cleaner one liners- -You know what's fun? Go to a German resteraunt and insist on using chopsticks -I recently bought a book of free verse. For twelve dollars -Sometimes they say the winds are calm. Well, if they're calm, they're not really winds, are they? If you are a Carlin fan or an open minded person looking for some great humor look into this one
Rating: Summary: Not as much fun as "Braindroppings" Review: Comedian George Carlin's first book, 1998's BrainDroppings, was mostly new material even though it did contain some transcriptions of his routines. Napalm & Silly Putty reads like someone just sat down in front of the VCR and watched his HBO specials, transcribing them as they went, even down to his extemporaneous commentary. And has anyone noticed that Carlin has gotten rather mean-spirited lately? Comedy, by its very nature, makes fun of someone or something, and Carlin is the king of the politically incorrect commentary. But his rapt enjoyment in the book for mayhem and destruction becomes rather disturbing, because it doesn't sound like he's joking. Carlin sounds like he's one week out from pledging with a militant militia group. With the exception of the hilarious Short Takes sections which are sprinkled liberally throughout the book (and even those contain a few one-liners used before), this book gets boring rather quickly. Besides, listening to his spoken inflections or watching his facial expressions is one of the chief joys of Carlin's humor. Napalm & Silly Putty is like buying a book of the lyrics to your favorite songs; you enjoy the words, but you don't get as much enjoyment out of it as you do listening to the songs themselves.
Rating: Summary: One of the greats!!! Review: This book, along with Brain Droppings, shows us why George Carlin is one the greats in comedy. Down to earth, bitingly real, it's everything that you would expect from George. Great stuff, keep it up, and DON'T YOU EVER CHANGE!!!
Rating: Summary: This is what a comic genius is......... Review: Mr Carlin is simply a man who has a brain and knows how to use it. He is not politically correct and his writings like his verbal presentations can make the ignorant laugh and not even realize they are the "joke". And he does it with charm, grace and the mental wince that makes it work. And as snobby as it sounds, Mr Carlin says political and social commentary the way it should be said and why it should be said. Read the other FIVE STAR reviews, since anything else I would write would simply be saying what others have said earlier and in most cases better.
Rating: Summary: Who is he talking about? Review: Why are the most mentally, morally, and emotionally defective fundamentalist Christians held up as representatives of the whole group? I have known fundamentalist Christian singers, musicians, artists, doctors, physicists, poets, college professors and philosophers. I have even heard several Christian comedians. I have yet to meet even one Christian terrorist. I like some of his comedy. I also can't stand political correctness, and see the stupidity of much of modern culture, including the substitution of gratuitous profanity for intelligent speech.
