Rating: Summary: george sells out to the man Review: i gave george 5 stars because he's great and this is great material. i laughed so hard i nearly kicked the slats out of my crib when i first heard most of it, though. it's old stuff re-packaged for the most part. i love the old stuff but that's what it is: old...used. like george, i guess.
Rating: Summary: Heard that one already Review: I used to be a big Carlin fan and ran out to buy this new book. This was recycled stuff from years past, and loaded with anti-Anglo, anti-Christian, anti-business, anti-American nonsense. If he tried to say what he says about the English and Christians about any other ethnic or religious groups he would have anti-racist organizations all over him. Georgie especially loves to make fun of the well-off, the white, the American....hey Georgy, look in the mirror, pal !!! Self-hating drivel for sure.... There are funny bits in there, but they are hard to find.
Rating: Summary: Carlin at what he does best...Ranting and raving! Review: "Braindroppings" was a great book, yes, but I was hoping for more older rewritten stuff. I guess my prayers were answered. Most of this stuff is old, I know that, but it is rewritten. However, the new material is really funny! "Monopoly" and "Henry the 8th" make me teary-eyed with laughter. And, I've never heard the Driving parts, so that was great. "Short takes" are not 40 pages long as in the older one, so theyre's more time for real material. And guys, read the death wishes, it's GREAT!
Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking Review: My favorite thing about George Carlin is the fact that his humor is laced throughout with subtle and blatant political slander and dissent. Besides being funny, he makes you think a bit about the country in which we all live and to which we pledge allegiance. The ideas he conjures are a bit fanatical at the least, but the book is still a riot and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys political humor. George Carlin seems to be a mixture of Dennis Miller and Bill Maher and a little Jerry Seinfeld. Great book, even after multiple reads.
Rating: Summary: I've been a Carlin fan since I was a kid. I'm not anymore Review: The only things that were funny in this book were the old standup routines I'd already heard. Most of the new material is just angry ranting. No punch lines... Carlin has always been cynical and bitter, which was funny. now he's just a quasi-liberal crazy old guy. If the rants were funny (try somethingaweful.com for good, cynical rants) it would be different, but it just seems that Carlin has decided to disconnect from reality completely. Makes me sad, he was a role model, I won't bother reading, tuning in, or buying tickets to his shows in the future.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking Review: My favorite parts deal with his revelations on how we misuse language. My only regret is that Carlin isn't computer literate and can't take on the internet, Microsoft, IBM and Apple.
Rating: Summary: you either love him , hate him, or... Review: .. find him irrelevant, sadly irrelevant.. . I was a big fan in the '60's; lost track of him lately[ other than to hear that he's been outrageous-- which I don't find troubling ]. . There are far too few nuggets here. What we have a simply a raving old man. . I bought this book because I thought I should have something to remember from this incredible talent. I was too late. . Maybe someone will put something together, like : vintage George Carlin. And I'll buy it, after someone takes N&SP off of my hands.
Rating: Summary: Thanks for entertaining my mind ... Review: I bought this book, as I have loved George Carlin for many years, have seen and bought all his comedy shows, and have really enjoyed this book. It kept me in stitches and allowed me to keep my mind active while on the bus going to and from work. George has a lot of talent, and where he comes up with some of these ideas beats me, but most of them I have thought of myself, and was just unable to express them myself. Most of the antidotes he writes about I have either heard or seen in his prior skits, and even though I have heard them before, it is a real pleasure to read them again. Hey, laughter is hard to come by nowadays, and sometimes you have to purchase it to make your life better. George made me smile and laugh more than once and as he states in his book: "A crazy person doesn't really lose his mind. It just becomes more entertaining". Thanks George for not losing yours, and making ours more entertaining!
Rating: Summary: Napalm & Silly Putty Review: First rate from beginning to end. Carlin gets better the older he gets.
Rating: Summary: I had hoped for more new material :( Review: I'm a big George Carlin fan. I've seen all his specials, listened to all his albums, and I've seen him in concert more than once. With that, I had already heard at least 80% of this book in some other form. The vast majority of new material in the book is in the "short takes" sections. These are little one line observations that sometimes hit the mark, but often fall flat. A bit on death with a "wouldn't it be funny if you could pre-program your body to do funny stuff at the funeral" premise seems a LOT like Bill Cosby's bit on death where you pre-program a tape recorder to SAY funny stuff at the funeral. Joke stealing or not, it seems awfully familiar. The book is good as a bit of nostalga. Unfortunatly, I had hoped it would be mostly new material.
