Rating: Summary: Sky of Stone, to read or not to read? Review: I enjoyed reading Homer Hickam's latest story about his 'growing up years' in Coalwood, WVA. After watching "October Sky", the story of Homer and his buddies intrigued me to learn more about the good old days living in a small town. Homer's new book continues on the line of "Rocket Boys" which I have. If you liked the movie or the book, you will like "Sky of Stone". As a friend of one of the actual Rocket Boys, I've learned that most of what Homer tells in his book is true. The book is humorous, yet has suspense which I couldn't wait to find out what happened in the end. You just have to read the book to know what I'm talking about. I read "Sky of Stone" in a day....I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Well done, but it's not October Sky Review: I enjoyed this insight into Homer Hickam as a young college-age man and his maturation, but enjoyed October Sky so much more. This tale seemed forced, with an underlying mystery that Homer just happens to help solve along the way. It's good, but of the two, I'd take October Sky.
Rating: Summary: A brilliant mystery Review: I love courtroom mystery novels. Amazingly, this is one of the best I've ever read. Combined with Hickam's taut, yet colorful writing, this turned out to be one of the best reads I've ever had. I can't wait to read his other books.
Rating: Summary: Sky of Stone Review: I never thought I'd find a Homer Hickam book I enjoyed more than Rocket Boys. I was wrong! Sky of Stone is riveting, really wonderful. It draws you in and holds you with its mystery and suspense.
Rating: Summary: Sky of Stone!WONDERFUL! Review: i read this book 4 a book report afta i had read both rocket boyz and the coalwood way. Homer Hickam is a wonderful author and well keep u reading and reading!
Rating: Summary: Sky of Stone has nothing to do with space and rockets Review: I teach Homer's books in my English class and I'm puzzled by a recent review. Sky of Stone has nothing to do with space and rockets. It is a story of a small town and its evolution during the latter stages of industrialization. Although Homer's previous two "Coalwood" books had a thread about building rockets as a boy, they've never had that much to do with space and rockets but more about the life in a most interesting little town and some great characters worth knowing. Sky of Stone is, as is related in another review below, more of a mystery story. If you like rockets and space, go elsewhere!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Read Review: I truly enjoyed Rocket Boys as a book and a movie but enjoyed "Sky of Stone" even more.Hickam does a great job of bringing to life his struggles of stepping from youth to manhood. I also enjoyed his vivid descriptions of the people and events of Coalwood. Great story!
Rating: Summary: Do you like Grisham? Hickam does better in this one. Review: I was surprised to find that Sky of Stone is actually a mystery story. I expected to read another Rocket Boys memoir but this book is far different, yet Hickam caught me in his web on page one and I never looked back. Read this book over a three day period, really surprised at how wonderful a book it is in terms of being a mystery story that Grisham wishes he could concoct. If Grisham's name had been on the cover of this book, he'd have sold a billion copies and his reputation as a writer would have been made by the critics. I'm hoping to see more of this author. Hickam is a fine writer and no matter what he writes it always seems to be a good read. That ain't easy, folks!
Rating: Summary: A budding Hickamite Review: It is really heartening to find a modern author who can write a book without a lot of violence and sexual content and come up with a work that you simply cannot put down. This is easily the best of his three novels about his Southern West Virginia roots. I spent just enough years in Southern West Virginia, worked just enough years in the coal mines, and lived just about the right time to be totally entertained by this book. I think that Hickam is something of an American hero and he has downplayed a life that the Nation can be proud of. Homer Hickam is one of the few (like former President Jimmy Carter or the late Justice Byron White) whom America could erect a statue to and say "this is what a person of any age or nationality should be" - both very accomplished and very moral. Also, what a great storyteller.
Rating: Summary: A great legal mystery story on top of everything else Review: It's sad this book has been kind of underappreciated by a legion of fans who like mystery legal thrillers. Even though it has the topnotch writing Hickam's fans have come to expect from him, it should be eagerly read by Grisham fans, too, or anyone who likes courtroom dramas. When the father in this book is put on the witness stand, it was a moment enough to make me almost catch my breath with suspense as to what was going to happen. One thing about all of Homer Hickam's books - they never bore! I devoured this one as all the rest. And then there's my favorite character in this novel - lovely Rita. Just thinking about that woman makes me breathe faster! A great love story interweaved with mystery and legal shenanigans. Good stuff.
