Rating: Summary: Wonderful story! Review: I picked up this book without knowing a thing about it. What a great surprise. The writing pulls you into the story and what a story! The book can be read for so many different reasons. It is a realistic look at the evolution of a marriage relationship. It is a great look at modern Chinese history from an insiders view. And it is a eye-opening look at the prejudices of the times - many that still remain. This would make a wonderful movie. I hope the author continues to write; she has definitely found a fan.
Rating: Summary: Satisfying read Review: I really enjoyed this book, especially the perspective on how the Chinese were treated in America at the turn of the century, and how Americans were treated with equal discrimination and harshness in China during the twentieth century. I found Hope a very strong and independent character. To sacrifice her own and her children's safety on so many occassions, and to suffer such hardship (even as far as starvation!) portrayed her love for Paul to a fault. Cloud Mountain is an incredible tale.
Rating: Summary: my review` Review: I really loved this book. The story is about two people who meet, fall in love, marry and then suffer the consequences for their love, for they are of different cultures. She is from America and he is Chinese. The story englobes the problems in China at the start of the Revolution and how this couple try to adapt to their surroundings. The characters are very well described and you feel an immediate bond to their struggles. You can really fell their determination, but also their pain at all they have to go through. Very good book and also a good source of information.

Rating: Summary: Washington State Book Reader ~ LOVED IT!! Review: In the last few years I have read many books that deal with China's history and this book was by far one of my favorites. It is a beautiful book that I felt compelled to share with others and purchased more than one copy so I could lend it out and make sure to have a copy for my collection. This book will not dissapoint, especially if you are as intrigued with China and it's history as I am! When I got to the last 20 pages or so I turned them very slowly in hopes of making it last longer! :) I urge you to buy this book and one for your friends! It is a very moving picture of what a person can live through and still see the beauty in life around them!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: Ms. Liu is a great storyteller. She draws you in through the characters in and their story. She doesn't overwhelm us with too much historical details of the Chinese revolution. I have read other stories in the past that have been bogged down with facts and "name" throwing that the real story gets lost, but not in Cloud Mountain. I was entralled from the first chapter and read practically straight through it!
Rating: Summary: Interesting, yet shallow Review: The author wrote an interesting story, with a great ability to re-create a very specific time and place. Her attention to detail was remarkable.But...the characters are one-dimensional, and some of the action (especially near the end) borders on melodrama. Hopefully with her next book she'll be able to have plot and character development on the same level.
Rating: Summary: How much of Cloud Mountain is TRUE? Review: The events retold in Cloud Mountain are virtually all true. The main characters are based on members of my family. The history is accurate, and the historical figures, such as Sun Yat-sen, Yuan Shih-kai, and Mikhail Borodin are all carefully researched -- they were associated with my family as described. Events such as the firing squad, midnight escapes, and rescue during the San Francisco Earthquake -- and of course the wedding trip to Wyoming -- are all true. The reason I chose to tell this story as a novel was that I wanted to get into the hearts and heads of these characters, especially my grandparents, whom I never knew. I wanted to live their adventures and experience their courage through the magic of fiction. I hope you will enjoy the adventure as much as I did. Please let us know what you think
Rating: Summary: Great beginning... Review: The first half of the book was quite exciting, detailing how a teacher who is fascinated by a particular Chinese student becomes permanently attached to him when he is her savior in the big San Francisco earthquake. Their early trials & tribulations are interesting, but after the familiy's move to China the story centers more around politics than personalities and I lost interest.
Rating: Summary: Good combination of history and personal insight. Review: This was the best book I read this year! I loved the point of view, a woman who had struggled with her own heritage, falls in love with a chinese man and is immersed in a complex web of relationships. A little romance, some politics, comprehensive references to chinese and american history at the turn of century. I learned and loved.
