Rating: Summary: JUST AWFUL (why are there no (-)negatives for the ratings?) Review: For lack of a better word, this book was WHACK! The writing was so terrible that if it weren't for a book club reading, I would have returned the book to it's owner (glad I didn't buy it). Eric's use of analogies was so infantile that I am in disbelief that he attended UCLA's writing program. Here are a few examples of these CHEAP analogies: "..my stride to the subway entrance[was]slower than molasses in Alaska." "I hated being played like a game show." "I hated the hypocritical feeling I was feeling. It was as thick as cold oatmeal" "My breathing was as thick as Aunt Jemina Syrup." Need I show more? WHACK!!!!! Every time I read the word "SmooVe" I cringed. It was not cute, it was annoying. And what was up with Kimberley calling her mother "mom-mom"??? Eric juxtaposed being a white woman vs. being a black woman. On one side I read how black women are ghetto, crazy and loose. Kimberley (the 'white' woman) was also loose, but she had class, adventure and sanity. At one point in the book when Kimberley does get upset with Peter, she says "Sorry. I guess my black side is coming out". Eric, how dare you! This book did not teach anything new or interesting about interracial dating, it only brought forth black and white (and especially black) stereotypes. The book was boring, the twists were predictable so the only things that jumped out at me was the terrible writing style.
Rating: Summary: What was the hype about? Review: Let me first say that it's not that I disliked the book. But honestly, the book was nothing fresh. It's probably a good book for insecure people who to this day still feel guilty about dating people of another race. It'll comfort you. Or if you're in an inter-racial relationship, and need something to feed you a reason to self-indulge, this is a book for you. But otherwise, this book said nothing much but what we hear/talk about all the time. And some people say that the author did some amazing job in writing from the woman's perspective... Are you kidding? A woman that's supposedly have travelled internationally and educated fairly well will not see an Asian person and say "Chinese" to herself. That's more of a guy thing, if anything. An educated woman in an urban environment will not do that.
Rating: Summary: nothing is as it seems...not even milk in my coffee.... Review: Wow and wow and wow. Couldn't put it aside this book found it too addictive. This books showed that there are so many things beyond our ability to see the real thang. Being tricked by conclusions not even able to "recognize" one of his own tribe, Jordan has to learn that conlusions can keep u away from having good experiences...soulfood...food for thought...ointment for the soul...if we don't stay open minded. Eric shows how much people of this world go only for the "looks" and not for the real core and what's inside and what the inner value of a person is. Eric showed us how cruel people are to their own kind, just mention the paperbag test...and what damage can be done if one is only living by prejudice, hatred, and taggin and judging people by first sight seeing it in Kimberly's experience. It didn't surprise me though that much that she actually came out as a 'sista'. but still she was seen as something she's not and is at the same time. The world would be a much better place when people would accept/respect each others flavours. Thank you for this milk in my coffee! Doesn't it taste wonderful? Won't be the last book I'll be reading from Eric Jerome Dickey. (did you know that there are chocolate brownies that taste like chocolate and there is not even a pinch of chocolate in it?? Think about it! ;-)
Rating: Summary: Excellent Human Story. Racial issues or Not. Review: The Sistas are going to hate me for this review but ..... I am a white woman and after reading many of this books reviews have come to realize that this book was not, initially well received by the black community. From what I've read, the 'backlash' was because it centered on an inter-racial relationship, which is not openly accepted; even in this day and age. I realize my perspective is completelty different, but Sistah's PUL-LEAZZEEE! This author is magnificent. He captures relationships like no other author I can think of (okay, besides Terry McMillan), he is funny, real, and makes us keep picking his books up! Also, Kudos to a man who can 'understand' a woman's thoughts; this is displayed in his on-target storytelling that every woman I know relates to and loves. Although this is a 'black' novel, there are still stereotypes of 'white' women in this novel that aren't so great either. It was odd to me to hear the main character's personal struggle in dealing with a white chick; a pale one, wondering how his friends would react to him dating a white woman. The bottom line is that not every story is a pretty one when it comes to human beings. We are all different. We all have issues that we struggele with. I felt this story was awesome. A very entertaining story about friends, relationships, family, ups-and-downs, with a 'white/black' chick thrown in. Bottom line, this book was extremely enjoyable, realistic, and human. Period.

Rating: Summary: Still a long way to go Review: Although this book was quite enjoyable generally, it was smeared with the racial and social division in the USA. ... I am from the Caribbean and our attitude is more like Kinikki. Inter-racial relationships are responsible for our diversity and colourful spirit. It also goes a long way towards evolution of the human race and culture.
Rating: Summary: Very Enjoyable Review: What an entertaining book. I could hardly put it down. The characters were so well developed as well as the story line. I loved all the twists and turns and the trip down to Tennessee was hysterical. A must read...you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book About True Love! Review: I loved this book, I could not put it down. I am a white woman and I do date black guys, this book only stated how I feel. Eric Jerome Dickey is a wonderful author. This books proves love knows no color.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: Eric J. Dickey is a great author. You can really get into his books. This book is about a good man who has the wrong girl but finds the right girl. The only problem with the right girl is she's white, or aleast he thinks she is. You have to read this book. You won't put it down, believe me.
Rating: Summary: Good Book!!!!!!!!_Bad Ending^^^^^^^ Review: I think Eric Jerome Dickey is great author and did a great job on this book as well. Though I didn't like the ending. I also didn't agree with how Kimberly got beat up or mugged. The begginning of the book was great. It was great how he met her in a cab. The way he let the stereotype out that he was a black man waiting on a cab that wouldn't stop for him was excellent. I love the way he eased into the relationship with Kim. Janetta was crazy though. She was pregnant and then just came out the blue and said she wanted an abortion. I think that Jordan was totally there for Janetta.
