Rating: Summary: this book is the real truth Review: FINALLY a book by an african american that doesn't fall into simplistic stereotypes about "interracial dating" (we're all 1 human race- but anyway....) EJD was on target. Brothas who are with caucassion women aren't all lost or misguided like OJ. Some of us love people for who they are, not their skin color -be they black like me or another shade in God's rainbow. And even if in relationships with a brotha and sista, if it isn't based on more than skin color, it isn't going very far Do I need to mention the skin color issues blacks have with each other???. Ooops! Won't go there. Thanks EJD for a REAL story about HUMAN beings who happen to be with another skin color.
Rating: Summary: A Caffiene Addiction! Review: Eric: Damn! From the cab ride, to the subway 'el, to putting around in the car, I felt like I was in the story. Your prose has a way of drawing the reader in - very descriptive. And I haven't seen nor heard colloquies as you used them, since I was back in Chattanooga!!! If I had to travel through cultures, MIMC would be my vehicle of choice. The reader is forced to slow down - long enough to take a hard view of self - before hopping the 'el for the nextcapade! Kimberly reminds me a lot of my deceased wife (Breast Cancer.), she was Dutch and German - through and through. That's why I missed the 'curve' in chapters 26 and 27. It will be all I can do not to tell my friends. I am hurrying to finish the book - so I can lone it out. You as a writer got skillzzzz!!! And this book is the rush that some of us need on the road of life. Stay down.
Rating: Summary: You are still number '1' with me Review: Jerome, "Milk in my Coffee" didn't hit me like the other two books, but as always you are one of my best authors. It wouldn't be fair not to drop a sweet comment about you. Everyone whom I asked to read this booked loved it and I just had to let you know. I can't wait to read "Cheaters" and I pray it gives me that "Dickey feeling" all over again. Smiles
Rating: Summary: I just finished reading and thoroughly enjoyed it! Review: I was pleasantly surprised find the characters so well defined emotionally. I wasn't sure how the story would progress from that first meeting in the cab and I never dreamed Jordan and Kimberly would go through a variety of situations leading to marriage. I didn't expect to discover that Kimberly's heritage would create such controversy. I enjoyed how you were able to express Jordan's reaction to learning the truth. I found it so very true to life. I was sadden with the outcome of Solomon and Zoe's engagement and Peter's death, both were so unexpected. I also, mourned the loss of the bond between Solomon and Jordan. However, you were able to bring joy into many lives with the good news about Reggie and Wanda. I look forward to reading your other books, in fact I'm on my way to the library to check out "Friends and Lovers" and am looking forward to others yet to come.
Rating: Summary: What???? Review: I liked the story of friends, or people who acted like friends and the tests they were presented. But I thought the main point of this book was a black/white relationship. With Kimberly being black, no matter how light/white she was, it took away from the main point of the book. It should have been about a single, non-gay, educated, middle-class black male dating a free-sprited, funky, artsy, confused black woman. Also enjoyed the omission of name dropping in this book (please see comment E. Lynn Harris). It is not necessary to tell the reader the brand name of every product used by the characters to tell the reader the character's are middle to upper class. I know welfare queens who sport Tommy and Gucci.
Rating: Summary: Eric has done it ...AGAIN! Review: As a close friend of EJD, I got nothing but love and admiration for the brotha. His work is only an extension of the man. EJD not only captures relationships in their rawest form, but creates and presents fiction the way it should be...unbelievably believable. I'm proud of you E.
Rating: Summary: Worth Reading Twice!! Review: Milk in My Coffee is a very entertaining novel. I read it for the first time in September '98. I recently joined a readers group and it was on the list, so I had to skim through it to refresh my memory. It was so good, I had to read it page after page again. Do you know how it is to watch your favorite movie over and over again and see something you didn't see before? Well that's how it was for me the 2nd time around. Eric J. Dickey is a gifted writer. I have read Sister Sister, Friends & Lovers and I am looking forward to his new book, Cheaters.
Rating: Summary: Did we read the same book? Review: Okay I've read, Friends and Lovers by EJD and loved it!!! I read the reviews before I read this one. While I have to say that EJD is a fascinating writer, literally speaking, what in the heck was he doing with this one? The reviews on this book for the most part baffle me. There was no in depth discovery of inter-racial relationships or relationships period. Every relationship in this book was bad, expecially between Jordan (the main character) and the other black women. His relationship with his best friend was even horrible and I personally don't see brothers vibing like that. This characterization to me was inconsistent. The only decent relationship in the book was between Jordan and Kimberly, the white, black, white woman? Hello???? I am all for whatever floats your boat in terms of relationships but to depict every black relationship as a travesty of mankind was a big turn-off. Try again Mr. Dickey. Please try again.
Rating: Summary: A delightful, inter-racial romance with lots of twists. Review: Milk in My Coffee captured my interest from the very beginning. You can feel the chemistry of the two main characters right from the start, however, you don't really know just how far it will develop. There are so many circumstances throughout the book that will totally take you by surprise. The style of writing in which Dickey depicts the story is witty and very creative. There are times when you will be knocked off your feet at the suspense that is revealed. At other times, you will find the actions/words of the characters excruciatingly humorous.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous, a book you can't put down! Review: I loved your character Kimberly. I think what I admired about her most of all, is that she didn't get into the white/black thing. She was who she was, by virtue of what she felt, her passions ruled her life. She leads with her heart rather than conventional thinking and was true to herself. She did not like labels and wanted to be accepted by who she was, rather than what she was. I had no clue, nor did it matter to me that she was biracial. I loved her energy. She got my attention the moment you introduced her. She was strong, yet soft, tough but still tender and frail. She fascinated me, but then I have always loved red headed people for their natural fire within. It's almost like God gave them so much passion, it turned their hair flaming red as a warning that the faint of heart should tread lightly in their presence. Jordan, he was just plain yummy. I loved the fact that you introduced his strong southern background that laid a foundation of all the racial underpinnings of his time and he had to face those challenges straight on while trying to come to grips with the fact that he like this "white" woman. I loved that he suddenly paid more attention to the people around him, while once again he was being judged by them because he was dating this white woman. The internal struggle he faced as he tried to balance who he was, where he had come from, what his belief system was and how to make it work within the tight framework that was his life, as he knew it. The remaining characters were like gravy on fluffy mashed potatoes. They just added the right flavor and texture to the book and rounded the whole thing out to be one fabulous page turning book. I love your style of writing, so please keep the pen to paper! I am looking forward to reading another one of your books.
