Rating: Summary: I love this Coffee :-) Review: Interracial relationships portrayed in most fictional works have been exploited merely out of sensationalism and have failed to give an honest, valid portrayal of black man/ white woman couples in the 90's... Milk In My Coffee is the latest novel to encounter this subject, and pretty much scores a home run. Dickey is excellent at using pop culture references to describe the world that Kimberly and Jordan live in...Other writers would have used them to the point of overkill, but Eric utilizes them with fresh twists... Jordan's feelings for Kimberly, and his internal conflict over being involved with a white woman are honest and at the same time,we smile as the love between the two blossom. i have dated outside my race constanly, as a black male, so i could easily relate to Jordan. I loved the character, Kimberly, though my only complaint with Eric about her, was that, i thought he was a bit deceptive in portraying her as a "white woman", when she was really "biracial." But then again, there is no such thing as "pure" white or "pure" black races, so i forgive Eric for that "slight of hand." After all, for many decades, if a person had one drop of black blood in them, they were considered BLACK! Eric also makes great use of the supporting characters in the story and of their opposition and eventual, if reluctant, support to their relationship; i thought the feelings expressed by them were honest also, because in real life, people may not always approve of your choices, but they will tolerate them! As for J'nette... I thought Dickey made her to be too bitchy;not all sistas are like that! but overall, i commend Eric for making a bold, refreshing statement about black male/white female couples in America, and how love can work, if two people really want it !
Rating: Summary: Another great effort by Eric Jerome Dickey! Review: I really must say that, after reading ALL of Eric Jerome Dickey's books, I really don't know how he manages to write one great book after another but he does! With that said, I really enjoyed Jordan and Kimberly's relationship from the beginning to the end. This is a great book for those who have either dealt with interracial relationships or knows someone who has. The plot moves along at a great pace and there were some surprises thrown in at the end too which made for yet another excellent effort by Eric Jerome Dickey.
Rating: Summary: Best book I've read this year Review: I just finished reading this book, and I must give Mr. Dickey his props. A co-worker of mine suggested that I read this book and I bought it right away. This book kept me glued to it at all times I hated to move my head. He did a great job when it came to suspense and the twists, oh the twists. I recommend this book to those who have had milk in their coffee or not. I'm going to pick up CHEATERS as soon as I leave work today.
Rating: Summary: GIVE THE SISTERS A BREAK Review: I LOVE EJD'S BOOKS. THIS WAS REALLY GOOD THE ONLY THING I HAD A PROBLEM WITH WAS HOW HE MADE BLACK WOMEN LOOK. TO TELL THE TRUTH I DO NOT KNOW ANY ONE WHO IS AS OFF THE HOOK AS JEANETTE AND HER SISTERS. THEY WERE POTRAYED AS REALLY GHETTO. BUT ASIDE FROM THAT THE BOOK HAD SOME SUPRISE TWISTS TO IT THAT MADE THE BOOK REALLY INTERESTING. I REALLY ENJOY EJD'S WORK. BUT NEXT TIME GIVE THE SISTERS A BREAK AND POTRAY THEM AS THE SMART AND CLASSY HUMAN BEINGS THAT WE ARE
Rating: Summary: Cream In My Java Review: I really liked this book. I especially loved the descriptions of M.E.M.P.H.I.S- the Funkytown. I felt like I was right at home in "Blackhaven". I liked the characters okay, but I wish Eric could have depicted the black woman a little better. I am not sure how to take Kimberly. I have never had much sympathy for the "tragic mulatto"--maybe I am just too harsh. I thought her ethnicity was a bit..contrived. Too convenient.
Rating: Summary: EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK ASAP Review: The book entitled "Milk In My Coffee" was an excellent and interesting book to read. I was very surprised at how real it seemed to me! In this amazing yet interesting book, it feels like you know some of the characters that are portrayed in the book. I've recommended this book to dozens of people and tryed to explain to them how interesting it was without telling the ending! The book also seemed to me like a soap opera! Milk In My Coffee most people can relate to and sometimes the best book to read is a book that you can relate to. If you read a book that you can not relate to, then you might not understand what is goin on in the book or might not be as interested in the book as some one that can relate to the book. I couldn't put the book down for one second. I highly suggest this book to mature adults or mature teens. It was very detailed in things that you wouldn't even think twice about asking a question because there was no need to, there was pleny detail in the book.
Rating: Summary: One Of The Best Books I've Ever Read! Review: This book, among others written by Eric Jerome Dickey, have been some of the most exciting that I have read in my life. He has a voice that speaks out, to let everyone know "What's Really Going On!" All my love to him, and success to everything he does.Love Is Me! Miss Corina M. Pleasant
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly Better Than I'd Imagined Review: I'll admit that I initially did not want to read "Milk In My Coffee" because I didn't think I'd enjoy the storyline. I've read interracial storylines before, but had reservations when it came to reading one written by a man. However, once I began to read, I was more impressed by the writer's skills, creativity, and hard work and didn't focus so much on the storyline. MIMC is full of what I call classic EJDisms (all the techniques for which he's known): metaphors, side-splitting 'run-to-the-bathroom' humor, strong characterization, plot twists, great attention to detail, and tension). The characters Kim, Jordan, J'Nette and Solomon were fleshed out very well. You could close your eyes and envision them. MIMC also had plenty of surprises and the writer PUT you THERE in the scene. He does have a great way of showing and doesn't merely tell. Those are the good things. The only distraction is probably the part where a trip is taken to Memphis. I found myself wanting to skip over that particular section because I was more into what would happen between Jordan and Kimberly. Overall, this story is well written and worth reading and adding to your EJD collection. Looking forward to reading the Mothers & Sons Anthology and Liar's Game.
Rating: Summary: Good Almost Til the Last Drop Review: Great book. I was just a little disappointed when we found out the "truth" about her. I felt that if Dickey was going to explore this topic, he should have stuck with it. The "truth" about the main character almst invalidates this story line and makes it a whole other issue all together.
