Rating: Summary: Interesting Reading Review: I had read about Eric J. Dickey's books on Amazon.com, I recently read Milk in my coffee. I thought it was wonderful. I read the book in less then a week. I recommended it to a co-worker and she is almost finished it also. I am going to read all of his books & hope they are as good as Milk in my coffee. Keep up the good writing & I will keep buying his books.
Rating: Summary: I DIDN'T LIKE THIS BOOK Review: I am a black man dating a white woman. You don't see many books or people expressing their ability to identify with that at all. When I picked up the book, I thought I would come across a piece that told my story or at least broke it down in a similar way. Everything rolled along fine with the read until the buildup for the entire premise was just thrown out so the author could have a "clever" plot twist. Instead, what he did was alienate his plot. No doubt, he was trying to turn it around. All in all, looking at it from another standpoint, I see the piece as a celebration for black relationships. Expressing the greatness that could come from two black people in love. Fine. The main character fell for one type of woman, lost faith in her, and subsequently found his diamond in the rough. I could see that from another point of view. But, I looked for something else and what I got in return was a cop out.
Rating: Summary: Ain't Nothin' Wrong with Being Down with the Swirl! Review: What made me truly pick up this book was the fact that I saw everybody reading it, and I am so glad I bought it. It clearly addresses what kind of things a person thinks about when becoming part of an interracial relationship. The book has so many good details that I can literally place myself in the book. EJD successfully expresses the characters' emotions. The book was well put-together. It's one of those books that you just don't want to put down. It is evident that it wasn't something that he wrote overnight, but actually put time into it.
Rating: Summary: This book is NOT an insult Review: i'm only writing to respond to the reviewer from London who said Milk In My Coffee will only appeal to people who dislike the black race. well, i like the book, i'm black and (as far as i know) i don't dislike the black race. first of all, remember ejd writes fiction. i could see if it were a non-fiction book, then people may have a right to jump all over him for squashing the image of the black woman. but, being that the book is fiction, we should view it as such. he's writing from the perspective of the characters, not necessarily his own personal viewpoints of black women. and even if he is writing from his own views, who's to say that he is banned from expressing those feelings in a book? bottom line-the book opened up dialogue and thought about a controversial topic - interracial dating - and should be perceived as such.
Rating: Summary: This book is an insult.. Review: I read the book and found it to be an insult to both black men and black women. The black characters were depcited as the dregs of society. If the author's picture was not on the back of the book I would have believed that the author was a racist bigot. I was appalled that the author could be so obtuse to undermine the black race. The book is tasteless and would only appeal to those that dislike the black race. I read the entire book expecting that there would be a change but it got worst. Insult after insult was thrown at any character that had black in them apart from the main character Kimberly who was/looked white, when she showed a temper 'that was the black in her coming out'. This book says alot about the author who really needs to take a check on himself, every insult he threw at the black women he threw at his mother, sister, aunty, daughter etc. Every insult he threw at the black men he threw at his brothers, uncles, sons etc.,and himself. This book does not deserve a grade, but unfortunately the tab request one...
Rating: Summary: Interesting Review: I found the book to be interesting but sometimes hard to follow. I had to reread at times to figure out who was talking. I thought he left us hanging on some of his story lines - which he could have left out of the book completely. Otherwise, it kept my attention and I would read other books by Mr. Dickey.
Rating: Summary: Milk in My Coffee Review: Milk in My Coffee is a pretty good book. It has a serious tone at times while there are funny moments also. Dickey kept me reading because I could'nt wait to see what would happen next. Throughout the book new twist and turns popped up which kept me interested. I cannot wait to see how the book turns out. The issue of dating outside your race is common but it is not noticed as much as he made it seem. Dating caucasian males myself I understand the issues that he brings forth but they don't bother me that much. I think that I have a choice to date any race no matter what anyone says so I am glad Dickey's characters, Kim and Jordan, did what they felt was right. Dickey made his details clear and expressed his ideas very well but he could've left more things to the imagination. Overall it was a good book because it was iteresting and realistic.
Rating: Summary: Well done Dickey! Review: Just finished Milk in my Coffee and loved it, couldn't put it down, made me laugh out loud. What I enjoyed most is the way Dickey makes his charters so true to life and real that anyone can relate to these characters on some human level. Dickey keeps it simple, his words roll off the pages with ease keeping the readers attention every step of the way.
Rating: Summary: SUPERB! Review: After reading this book, I went out and bought other novels by Eric Jerome Dickey. I have "Friends and Lovers" and "Sisters, Sisters." I am living overseas. So, I either order my books online or purchase them from our AAFES Bookmark. I was indulged in this book. I took it to the gym, the grocery store, to work; where ever I thought I might have the time to slip in a few minutes or an hour, I read it till I finished it. As I approached the last few pages of the book, I got mad because I had finished it. The little synopsis of "Cheaters" at the end of "Milk in my Coffee" sent me on my path to find that book and I did. Presently, I am reading "Cheaters." His writings are so live. As I read, I could vividly picture the scenarios in my head. After finishing the book, I felt as though I had seen a movie or something. Mr. Dickey is truly a gifted writer. I love to read and when I get something as interesting as "Milk in my Coffee" I get a new sense of excitement.
Rating: Summary: Great Beginning, Sloppy Ending Review: Eric Jerome Dickey's "Milk In My Coffee" had a terrific start. He's a good writer, good at describing the setting and the character's appearance and the like. But the relationship between Kimberly and Jordan could've been fleshed out. Instead we were TOLD what the relationship was like and not SHOWN. He should have had more scenes of the growth and development of the relationship so we could judge for ourselves, as the readers, whether we thought the relationship was stable or not. And the book went downhill after Kimberly's mugging. So many things were left out. Like the topic of her husband--Jordan just got over that? And the fact that David died--shouldn't she have felt more for that, even if he was a jerk? And Jordan quickly gets over his shock of Kimberly hiding things from him--her true culture, her husband? Shouldn't they have had a discussion about honesty? And the Solomon storyline felt unfinished, as did the Reggie storyline, which made both seem pointless. Still, I can't hate on Mr. Dickey. He is a good writer, and I will read more of his books.
