Rating: Summary: As thrilling as the title suggests; not a dull sentence. Review: From the getgo this novel draws you into its exciting adventure. A blend of facinating historical fiction and seductive supernatural in a contemporary setting. It is an almost obsessive read, that cannot be put down until finished. Not a dull sentence in the book!
Rating: Summary: You'll Feel the Chill As you look for the gold. Review: This is great mind candy. There's treasure, danger, technology and mystery. This is very reminiscent of Smith's The Seventh Scroll.
Rating: Summary: Another treasure from Child & Preston ! Review: To my mind they have done it again, right up there with Relic and Reliquary. This time there's no deep dark jungle, it's pirates and buried treasure and curses on all the greedy seekers. What could be better for a summer's read ! The scene is the coast of Maine, but the legend is pure Oak Island,Nova Scotia. Well Done Indeed !!!
Rating: Summary: Suspenseful and thrilling, kept me flipping the pages Review: This book was one of the best that Preston and Child have written. I am starting Thunderhead, and so far Riptide blows it away. This book keeps you reading and the unexpected twists will astounish you. The authors developed the characters so good after I was done, I wanted to know what happened next in the character's lives.
Rating: Summary: Certainly better as a movie idea than as a novel Review: It probably would have been better for the authors of this book to simply skip the book stage of their project and sell the movie rights directly to Hollywood. Their concept is certainly exciting, and there a few (though not a lot) of twists in the plot that could keep moviegoers on the edges of their seats. But as a novel, this work leaves a lot to be desired. The characters are about as sterotyped and one-dimensional as possible, perhaps as part of the authors' unrelenting efforts to appeal to the Lowest Common Denominator. Much of the plot is highly predictable, and brings to mind a very conscious attempt to combine elements of "Jaws," "Jurassic Park," and (yes) "Moby Dick." It's a fun summer-read-at-the-beach kind of book, so lots of people will surely enjoy it. But a GREAT book it is not.
Rating: Summary: A grip-the-seat-of-your-pants thrill ride! Review: This book is Robert Louis Stevenson meets Michael Crichton. If you are a treasure-hunt/high seas enthusiast, then DO NOT miss this! Even if you aren't a fan of the genre, if you have read Preston and Child's other works, you know the drill! Make sure you've got a decent bulb in your bedside night light. And if you've never heard of these guys or their stuff, then GET WITH THE PROGRAM; you are missing out big time!
Rating: Summary: Almost supernatural, yet entirely believable Review: Having thoroughly enjoyed Relic, Reliquary, and Mount Dragon, I was (admittedly) expecting high standards. Well, no disappointment there! The pace is never boring, yet facts are cleanly presented and supreme attention is paid to detail. This is a neat, fast-action adventure bordering on sci-fi, though the suspense doesn't come close to that of Relic. As in the other author's books, the well-rounded blend of history, biology, geology, and high-tech wizardry makes for a great story.
Rating: Summary: Well paced and entertaining Review: I bought this book as my "beach" book this year and I was glad that I did. It is not a great book by any stretch of the imagination, but it is fun to read and you are wanting to know what happens at the end. It is a perfect vacation book in that it keeps your attention and moves along quickly. I will say this though, if you have not read the Relic, get and read that book first before this one. Now THAT is a great book.
Rating: Summary: Treasure hunting fun Review: A great book from start to finish, it brought to mind Oak Island, and Blackbeard's treasure... although Red Ned's treasure is more viciously defended. Though it seems supernatural at the beginning, Man is revealed as the ultimate architect of doom.. especially a man who has nothing left to lose. Adventure, excitement.. a contrived romance (forgivable), and a relentlessly thrilling third act make this an enjoyable read.
Rating: Summary: Note to Indiana Jones & The Goonies: Move Over! Review: Fun, fun, fun! I have not enjoyed a story so much in such a long time! Child & Preston have done it again and I'm anxiously looking forward to their next novel... If you are a fan of adventure novels with a great historical setting and beleivable characters, look no further. The authors work so well together as a team and have an uncanny nitch for developing the most original ideas and snappy dialogue. I highly recommend this as a fun summer read!
