Rating: Summary: A Fan of The Games Review: This book by Tom Clancy is the first one I have read and I enjoyed it immensely. Although it is difficult to understand if you do not have a knowledge of terrorist organizations and intelligence agencies. This book is action at the very begining, then some scheming and then some more action. It will keep you hanging on to every word. This book is for those who like realistic fiction. I am planning on reading more Tom Clancy books in the very near future.
Rating: Summary: Not his best, but a good read... Review: Compared to other Tom Clancy novels, this has an average story. The plot isn't well-developed or complex like his other works, but there is a decent amount of suspense. But you will find out a lot about Jack's history, so if you're looking to read the entire Ryan series, you might want to read this first.
Rating: Summary: Absolute drivel..... Review: What a pity that Amazon doesn't give people the opportunity to provide a list of their least favourite books. This undoubtably would top my list. It is complete pretentious and (from a British perspective) deeply patronising nonsense. The plot is laughably implausible and Jack Ryan's character is utterly one dimensional. I agree with a previous reviewer who gave credit to 'Hunt for Red October' and 'Red Storm Rising' for their technical content. But I'm afraid as a good storyteller, Clancy just doesn't cut it. For the ability to tell a good yarn I'd recommend Frederick Forsyth and John LeCarre anytime over this garbage.
Rating: Summary: Mediocre Clancy Story Review: So ok, we all know that Jack Ryan is a good man. So good that throughout this book, he engages in a tedious inner-battle as to whether or not he should be devoting his time and energy to the CIA, indirectly helping bring the terrorists who attempted to kill his wife and daughter to justice. In the real world, people like Jack Ryan would be itching to get their hands on coldhearted killers who put their family's lives on the very brink of disaster. Yet Ryan is troubled because his intense data analyses are helping bring killers like these to a secret justice that they deserve? No, I don't think our boy Jack Ryan would care what happened to low life thugs like Sean Miller if it were real life. But it's not real life, and other than a warped sense of guilt, Jack Ryan performs well to serve Clancy in this great book. Great story, good characters, a little bit of action, lots of political insight, and a great stretch of reading in-between. I liked it, definitely not my favorite of Clancy's, but it was good nonetheless. Hope this review helps!
Rating: Summary: Gripping, detailed, and insightful Review: Clancy again displays his attention to detail and extensive insight into government and terrorist matters in his entertainment novel, Patriot Games. The book has a gripping plot that keeps readers interested throughout the entire novel. If you have any interest in terrorists or anti-terrorist groups, then Patriot Games is a book that will grab your attention and keep it until you finish the book. Jack Ryan has a PhD in History and he teaches at a military college in Anapolis, Maryland. Dr. Ryan is a reoccuring character in many of Clancy's book and he is an ex-marine which serves him well when he encounters terrorists. Clancy's style is very detailed and to the point. The tone is serious but he adds some comical releif through clever things that his characters say. There are gun battles and action packed fight scenes that Clancy describes in detail that is seldom seen in novels. His use of comparisons in his writing is instrumental in the readers ability to imagine everything that is going on with little confusion or difficulty. Reading Patriot Games was like watching a movie except that it was much more exciting and the graphics were much more enjoyable. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a strong stomach and a love of action.
Rating: Summary: TOM'S BEST NOVEL!!! Review: This is by far my favorite of the Ryan Series. They re all great, but this one is a cut above. You are sure to delight in the story and characters from all ranges of society. Literally! I look forward to reading it again.
Rating: Summary: Patriot Games Review: In the first book of the Jack Ryan series, Patriot Games, Tom Clancy does a masterful job in writing this novel. The book begins with Jack Ryan gathering information on history in England, when he breaks up a terrorist attack on the Prince and Princess of Wales. Ryan then goes back to America where he goes back to work for the CIA. Revenge is one of the main plots in the story, Sean Miller, one of the men Ryan stopped from killing the Prince and Princess escaped while on his way to jail, has regrouped and wants revenge on Ryan and his family for his stopping of the attack. I enjoyed this book very much, and would recommend that you take the time to read this exciting book.
Rating: Summary: Green Porche, Blue Tomcat and Silver Costanza Review: Being the first of the Jack Ryan series, Patriot Games was an overall good read. While on a vacation with his wife and daughter, Jack Ryan breaks up a terrorists attack at London, only to find out he had just saved the lives of the Prince and Princess of Wales. For some time, Jack is the media's center of attention. However, the proud hero soon finds out that he and his family are also a new target for the Ulster Liberation Army, a highly dangerous division of the IRA. The novel gives you both good guys and bad guys' perspective throughout the revenge plot. This is good because it doesn't just focus on Jack's repetitive life but the terrorists' professionalism and the FBI's search for the thugs. Unfortunately, at certain points when the FBI and CIA are discussing possibilities for the terrorists' motives, it can get confusingly frustrating. This can be a drag, but it is quickly compensated with humor and suspense. Patriot Games was my first Clancy novel, and it won't be the last.
Rating: Summary: A Good Book To Lose Some Sleep Over. Review: I finished this book in less than 2 1/2 days. Any TV programs I usually watch during the time I was reading this book were recorded and watched later. I wanted to put my full attention in the book and not miss anything. This will definitely be a book I will re-read - re-re-read, to get the repeat thrill the book put me through while reading it the first time.
Rating: Summary: Patriot Games Review: This is the first item of the Jack Ryan series. Before this, I read The Hunt for Red October, then I came to this. I thought that the story was great, and realistic. Although it does get boring in the middle, but do not throw the book away for that. It DOES get a great ending.
