Rating: Summary: Simply marvelous Review: This is Roald Dahl's second-best and most underrated book. It ranks second only to Matilda. Yet when you hear people speak of Dahl, you only hear them speak of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or James and the Giant Peach. This is unlike anything Roald Dahl wrote, because the people are so ordianry. They're just regular people, caught up in one extremely wild plot involving pheasant theft and raisins with sleeping pills. The descriptions of Danny and his father are lovely, and you wish you had a dad like that. Should be read by one and all.
Rating: Summary: Another masterpiece. Review: This is much different from any other Roald Dahl story. The story is about:A kid named Danny who has grown up with his father in a gypsy's caravan with no mother. His life is good. Then one day his father reveals a secret that he poaches animals, usually, pheasants. Danny's father goes out to do that one day, and gets stuck in a pit, where the keepers will take him out of tomorrow. Danny comes to rescue his father and finds his father sprained his ankle. They finally get out and devise a secret formula to get all the pheasants with one blow. Can they do it?
Rating: Summary: A Winning Book! Review: I'm a huge fan of Roald Dahl and "Danny the Champion of the World" is one of my favorites. It may even be my favorite book. It's about a boy and his father, their great relationship, and a most unusual adventure. I would suggest this book for everyone, parents included!
Rating: Summary: An absolute joy! A classic. Review: A wonderful book to read as a kid, or to read to your kid as an adult. The story is about Danny and his amazing dad (his mother is dead) and the wonderful hijinks they get into together. The plots they come up with are absolutely fabulous, and they involve a lot of pheasants. There are moments in here that were so happy that I literally cried. As a child, it was one of my two favorite books, along with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (which I read 30 times). This gets my absolute highest recommendation, I'd give it 6 stars if I could!
Rating: Summary: Not one of his best... Review: I'm a huge Roald Dahl fan, but I found this to be one of his weakest books; in essence, it teaches "If someone isn't nice, it's okay to steal from him." In addition, the story seemed rather uninspired; though the relationship with Danny and his father was touching, it seemed to wrap itself around a metaphor of dubious origin; father and son bonding over stealing & killing. I'd suggest the superior "The Enormous Crocodile" , or the quintissential "james and the giant peach", "matilda", or "witches" (my personal favorite) over this questionable entry.
Rating: Summary: Atypical Dahl Makes for a Good Read. Review: This is probably one of Roald Dahl's most atypical books...here you'll find no fantastical elements, unless you count William's BFG story to Danny (which inspired Dahl's full-length novel about the Big Friendly Giant). No humorously exaggerated characters here...of course there's humor, but the characters are all people we've met. Even the baddies don't have the usual Dahl-ish quality of over-the-top nastiness for the sake of nastiness. The villains, too, are believable...the schoolroom Little Caesar who acquired a taste for power in the Army and continues to exercise it in his class, the noveau riche snob who puts on flamboyant airs in a desperate attempt to fit in with the old-money aristocrats. The very uniqueness of this book is what makes it so human and so appealing. This was originally a short story by Dahl (not for kids) that featured two roguish friends instead of a father and son. I'm glad he re-thought things, because William is one of the most beautifully and sensitively drawn fathers I've ever seen in children's literature, with his boundless fascination for the natural world, his inventiveness and creativity, and his ability to be both gentle and strong, devoting both strength and gentleness to his son (he's ready to thrash the aforementioned tyrant teacher for whipping Danny). Some have said that this book glorifies theft and dishonesty. Maybe I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, but in a way I see it as justified...William and Danny are poor (not really starving, but if anything ever happened to business they might be), and the rest of the village is not exactly rolling in money. No doubt they've known times when they wondered where their next meal was coming from. Yet rich, pretentious Victor Hazel has woods teeming with wild game...being fattened up for the sole purpose of being shot in a no-contest pheasant shoot. Can we wonder at it?Because of its warmly human perspective and beautiful father-son relationship, this would make a superb birthday gift from fathers to sons, or a Father's Day gift from sons to fathers. One note...in 1989 Jeremy Irons and his son Sam starred in a film version. The original illustrations (pre-Quentin Blake) for this book depict a William who looked so much like Jeremy Irons it was eerie...remember, these were done years before the film was made!

Rating: Summary: Roald Dahl has really done a great job ! Review: "Danny the champion of the world" is a very well written book about a boy who is living with his father in an old gipsy caravan. When Danny is nine years old, his father tells Danny that he's a poacher and that he poaches pheasants. First Danny gets very aghast by the fact that his father is a poacher, but then he begins to like the idea of poaching pheasants from the horrible and rich man Hazell. Danny helps his father and lot of fun things happens. A book that shows you how much fun you can have with your parent. At least if your parent is SPARKY.
Rating: Summary: I Can't Put It Down! Review: This book is great! You won't be able to put it down! It is about a boy named Danny that loves his father more than anything(except God.)Then he and his father have to outsmart the villainous Mr.Hazell. Pros: The best book ever. It will provide entertainment for kids and adults for all ages Cons:If you like other great books, you will like this.
Rating: Summary: This book did mean a lot to me as a child. Review: I am writing this here now because 14 years ago: I was under 13. I enjoyed this book in so many ways I no longer remember; so, I am buying it again because the first copy was handed down long ago(maybe it can help me remember life as a child)or help me write as Dahl did.
