Summary: John Grisham at his Greatest
Review: I don't know what book the other reviewers on here have read (those that didn't give the book a great review), but it wasn't this one. As someone who grew up reading mostly speculative fiction, I never thought I'd enjoy reading something so commonplace as a story about lawyers mixed up with Organized Crime. Boy, was I wrong. This book literally started me on a rollercoaster ride that has led me to literally devour most of the other works by Mr. Grisham, and have led me to other wonderful authors such as Tom Clancy, James Patterson, Jack Higgins, and others (none of these other authors write legal fiction, but this book opened my eyes to the fact that a book doesn't have to take place in another time or universe to be very very good).The story is about Mitch McDeere, a newly-graduate lawyer seeking his first opportunity after school. The Firm is a legal entity in Memphis which appears very prestigious on the outside, but on the inside is simply a front for the Mafia to launder its money. Of course, the Firm does what it can to get Mitch to goose step with the rest of them (such as setting him up for potential blackmail, if needed, by taking pictures of Mitch's seduction by a beautiful girl on a beach in the Cayman Islands). Mitch is already finding out that things aren't all perfect and above-board at his firm when he's approached by the FBI, and told that he can either help bring down his firm and the mafia figures behind it, or he can go to prison with the rest of them. The result of this dilemma makes for one of the most invigorating adventure stories I've read in quite some time. Either path that Mitch chooses is one that's ultimately going to get him in big trouble. One path will have him a fugitive from the FBI, the other from the Mafia. Which to choose? Of course, as Mitch dodges his way through a series of narrow escapes from both the FBI and his firm, he manages to come up with a solution that's both creative, witty, and very suspenseful. Usually, I can see the outcome of a book coming a mile away. Not so with this one. It surprised me, and that's saying something. And for those who said that the movie had the better ending, I can't disagree more. The ending to the Firm was elegant and perfect. In the ending to the movie (which had significant flaws and differences from the book), it was obvious the director and screenwriters chickened out and wrote their own ending. The result is that the movie totally loses all credibility at the end, trying to tie up a very complex and well thought-out plot with a happy, unrealistic ending that was simply way to sappy to be believed. So, if like intelligent stories with great dialog, and intriguing plotlines, you'll enjoy this book. If you've seen the movie, you will still enjoy this book. They are very very different. In fact, this book makes the movie look fairly embarassing by comparison. When will Hollywood learn?

Summary: Not All It's Cracked Up To Be
Review: This is the first John Grisham novel I've read, and I'm not impressed. It's exciting enough, but overall the plot was implausible. I agree with one of the other reviewers who said that the book would have been better (and I would say, more believable) if Mitch McDeere had cooperated with the authorities. I mean, how easy can it really be to run from both the FBI and the Mob? The premise (of a low-profile, high-powered law firm that fronts for the Mafia) is interesting, but Grisham could have done a better job with it.

Review: As I was lying on my bed reading,
for a second, I laid there, looking at the walls of my room thinking "might this room be bugged?"
It was a freaky thought!
Kin'a chills you to think somebody's been listening to you on the phone and everything.
It's like a tornado that sucks you in and won't let you go!
Like you're drunk with stories and mysteries.
It's like as if it's changing the world around you and makes you become a character from the story, the book, in your hands!!
I stayed up a few nights to read this book.
And it was worth it!

Summary: A book that cannot be put down
Review: The Firm is a book built up with suspense; you never know what will happen next to the story. It starts with Mitch McDeere (main character) surprises everyone by joining in a small, private, very rich tax firm. McDeere and his wife Abby quickly settle in Memphis and start a new life, where they are young and happy. This is just like a normal lawyer where they hit big, and have a prosperous life. But as the story goes on things did not go as smoothly as McDeere thought. Two of the partners in the firm died in a suspicious diving accident in Grand Cayman, the firm are also overly proud about how no one has ever resigned. Afterwards, a FBI agent by the name of Tarrance suddenly appears in front of McDeere's life, and tells him that a mafia family in Chicago controls the firm. Everything properties that McDeere owned are all being bugged and are listened by the security in the firm twenty-four hours. Now McDeere has to make a decision, ignore the FBI agent, and get busted in to jail later on in his life, or cooperate with the FBI and taking the risk of getting killed by the mafia. I would often question myself, "If I was McDeere, what would I do?" The situation that McDeere's having is a life-death situation.
Personally, I would give two thumbs up for this book. It isn't like other books where the settings are based in somewhere familiar to the reader, and plot is about top lawyers competing with each other. Instead, the setting is in Memphis, Tennessee, a city down south of America, where people pay no attention. Imagine yourself as McDeere, and you will feel the tense dangers around him

Although I was a fan of the film before I read the book I have to say that the book is much better a must for any fan of suspense thriller's

Review: This book starts out smoothly and finishes, well, not so smoothly. This book about Mitch McDeere and his job at a Mafia-run law firm-and it's pretty good at making the reader love the book for suspense and such, but I didn't really like the ending at all. For those of you who have not read the book, go and buy another John Grisham book, anyone but this one. I think I might have liked it A LOT more if Mitch McDeere had cooporated with the FBI (Don't worry, that line won't give away the book.) It's an okay book, but if you don't want to waste time with so-so books, go read something else!

Summary: THE FIRM - Suspense Overloaded, GREAT Book!!!
Review: This is an all around excellent book! The complexity of the characters and plot made it impossible to put it down. Even though the first 200 pages were used as a suspense builder, it added to the quality, not decreased it. This book is based on Mitch McDeere joining a small law firm in Memphis when he is fresh out of law school. This firm offers more than any other and seems perfect, too perfect really. As the book goes on, the firm gets more and more peculiar and Mitch gets deeper and deeper into investigation. THE FIRM provided an excellent read!
