Summary: Napping on the job
Review: I'm not sure exactly how to recommend this book. At the very beginning it's the perfect story to read to any child you want to put to bed. Halfway through, however, it becomes a lively rollicking/jumping/bouncing kind of tale. The premise follows a grandmother, her grandchild, a dog, a cat, a mouse and a flea as they all nap (save the flea) on a wet and rainy afternoon. Slowly, one by one they crawl on top of one another to sleep. Quickly, one by one, they wake one another due to the untimely flea bite the mouse acquired.

Don Wood, the illustrator, has done wonders with the light in these scenes. The dreary drizzly afternoon pours steadily, making the reader really want to snuggle up in a warm bed too. Then also, his drawings are quite clever. Each character appears in every single spread. The flea is represented more as a circular black dot with a halo about it. Almost as if the flea was lit from inside. Kids will probably enjoy locating the mouse and the flea in each and every picture as the scenes change and the characters toss and turn in bed. In the end, I was particularly taken with the grandmother. Sleeping in her nylon-like socks, her reaction upon falling back upon her bed and breaking it is one of pure joy. Atta girl, grandma! In that second to last scene in the book, daylight streams into the room, the blue walls now a cheery and dazzling yellow. Any child uncertain of the benefits of napping (of which there may be one or two) will enjoy seeing how lively and boisterous the characters are after getting a good afternoon's rest. The last page of the book speaks volumes for the benefits of sleep. A marvelous story.

Summary: 5 stars is not enough!!!!!
Review: I've been a bookseller, librarian, mother and read-aloud volunteer and this is my absolute favorite children's book for curling up with and reading to a young child. Cumulative, predictable (something young children enjoy) and engaging, The Napping House is terrific. The child in the story could be a boy or a girl. It opens and closes with an inviting look at the exterior of an old fashioned home (which looks like the author's home, BTW). Inside the house, everyone is alseep, but there's soooo much going on here. The characters are changing positions. The changes in perspective and the light as the book progresses make it interesting. The illustrations are amazing, detailed, beautiful, and at the same time humorous. And the Granny! You've got to love this Granny. She there just snoring, wearing her bed cap, nightgown and stockings (with reinforced toes & heels). She has all of these characters piling up on her and when the bed breaks, instead of looking mad or alarmed, she just looks like she's having a grand time. After you get this book, you'll want King Bidgood's in the Bathtub, and Piggies also by the Woods. And if your child likes things a bit scary try Heckedy Peg. Happy reading!

Summary: The napping house
Review: It was one of the first books I bought when I had my baby. I try to read it to her a few times a week. I love this book, the soft pictures and the silliness that occurs when a certain flea is wakeful.
A wonderful book for those pre-napping moments.

The Napping House
by Audrey Wood
Scholastic Inc.

The Napping House is a realistic fiction/ fantasy book. It all started when poor old grandma was sleeping on a cozy bed and her grandson came and decided to sleep on her. Then along came the dog who decided to plop right on the grandson. Along walked a cat that saw that the bed looked very comfortable and decided to jump right on the dog. Then came a mouse who jumped right on the cat and started sleeping soundly. Then came the problem. The flea who decides to bite the mouse. Lets just say that after that it wasn't a napping house anymore.

The main characters in the book are the grandma, grandson, dog, cat, mouse, and flea. The characters in the book don't really have personalities but they all have something in common. They are all sleepy and are all trying to find a place to sleep. At the end of the book when the conclusion happens they all have something in common too. They are all happy.

I think this book is very good and I would recommend it to anyone especially little kids. The book is funny and none of the characters get mad at each other. The illustrations in the book are amazing and you can just see the characters come to life. The wording is flowing and is nicely done for anyone to understand. I hope after you read this review you go and read this book yourself or to someone else.

Summary: An Absolutely Adorable Book
Review: My 2-year old daughter loves this book, and insists on reading it every night. We have several books by Audrey and Don Wood, and as always this is creatively written with wonderful illustrations. It's the perfect length for a bedtime story, and it becomes more and more fun each night, as we now recite the book together. Fun, humor, and creativity - you can't ask for much more in a children's picture book.

Summary: Delightful Bedtime Reading
Review: My 3 yr old daughter really likes this book. It's a really cute book, but since I told her that she was the "dreaming child" and that her Grandma was the "snoring granny", she can't get enough of it. It also helped that Grandma has a dog and a cat too, like the granny in the story. She laughs and squeals at the funny illustrations. This is going to be a book that her and Grandma will get to share often, especially on sleep overs.

Summary: A Real Snoozer
Review: My child loves many books, but this one loses him every time. Perhaps he is bored by the monotonous illustrations that focus on one room, adding a small detail on every new page? Perhaps it is the repetitive sing-songy verse? Uninspiring.

Summary: Another RAVE for this book
Review: My daughter is 2 and she loves this book. I do too! It is beautifully illustrated and the cutest fun story to read. My daughter originally was read this story at daycare, I bought it as soon as I saw her eyes light up when she saw it. This book will stay in our house for a very long time!

Summary: An oft repeated giggle fest
Review: My girls made me read this book every night for months on end. Even at a very young age, my youngest had the words memorized and "read" with me every night. The pictures are well-drawn and colorful as they show the domino effect of one little flea bite. As my girls get older I will always have warm memories of watching them giggling over a story they have heard over and over. A definite must have for all kids.

Summary: My kids loved this book (and they're fussy)
Review: My kids (7 and 5) absolutely loved this book! I picked it out at the library and they both roared with laughter through the whole thing. We've been rereading it and looking at the pictures ever since. The story is good, but the artwork is quite inspired. Anyone who liked this book would also like Cat Up a Tree. I highly recommend both.
