Rating: Summary: great read Review: I have to admit this book surprised. I was not very impressed with EJD's last two books Thieves Paradise and Between Lovers. This book however was awesome. The characters were real and had heart. I especially enjoyed the scenes between David and the narrator. I didn't like the way the book ended, I would have liked to have seen whether two people, meeting "in war" as David put it, could have found a way to find peace together. It was definitely a page turner and makes us all wonder what we might do if placed in the situations these characters were in.
Rating: Summary: excellent! Review: i've read every book written by eric jerome dickey and i must say, this is his best novel yet. the plot was unpredictable and twisting throughout. i read this book in one day because i couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: This is one book that everyone needs to check out Review: Eric Jerome Dickey is finally starting to get his due. He has weathered the unfortunate label of "black author" and has simply become known as an author, and a very good one. His characters are mostly black, true, and there are even some real "African-Americans" in THE OTHER WOMAN (there's an Ethiopian immigrant, for one) but the concerns he writes about in THE OTHER WOMAN can affect anyone, of any race. Still, I don't think that anyone can write about them quite the way Dickey can.THE OTHER WOMAN is told from the point of view of Freckles, a television newswriter who is married to Charles, a middle school teacher. Their situation is, I think, fairly common: they both work, they're on somewhat different schedules, and they are all too often like ships passing (and occasionally and hurriedly bumping) in the night. Things aren't bad between them, not by any means, but they're maybe a little too ... complacent. They're in a content and comfortable, if not exciting, groove. That at least is what Freckles believes until she begins receiving frantic calls from David Lawrence. Lawrence has a tale to tell: his wife, Jessica, is having a torrid affair with Charles. Freckles confronts Charles, who admits the affair but downplays his emotional involvement, even as he is confronted with the truth that the affair has been carried out over the course of eight months. Lawrence has proof in the form of instant messages between the two lovers that are explosive in their content. Lawrence, perhaps the most complex character in THE OTHER WOMAN, has an agenda of his own. Hurting and humiliated, he uses Freckles as an instrument of revenge against both his wife and her paramour. The conclusion is explosive but no less shocking in its inevitability. Dickey does an incredible job here. I don't think I've ever read a novel by a male writer who has done such an excellent job of getting into a woman's psyche. I'm not sure if I can describe this correctly, but here it goes. There are those areas of a woman's emotions that a man has some difficulty understanding. Dickey gets the description of those emotions just right. But where a man would ordinarily try to explain those and break them down to be understood, Dickey does not. Dickey, in the literary sense, understands what Wynton Marsalis has stated in the musical sense: that what is not played is often as important as what is played. This doesn't mean Dickey neglects the guys, however. The guys react as males will do. Do they ever. One other thing. Dickey does not exactly shirk away from graphic sexual descriptions. While he is not subtle in his descriptions, however, he is never gratuitous. THE OTHER WOMAN reads as if Dickey spent some quality time talking with women about what they want and want they need. Oh, one other thing. If there is a sudden run on the Altoids 12-packs at the local Sam's Club, it's because of THE OTHER WOMAN. And gentlemen, an extensive field study I conducted recently indicates that it works both ways, if you're interested in giving as good as you get. THE OTHER WOMAN is a book about women and men --- and is for both. Dickey just gets better and better at what he does and is finally getting the widespread recognition he deserves. This is one book that everyone needs to check out, for many reasons. --- Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub
Rating: Summary: The Darkside of Comuppance . . . Review: EJD I have always been a great fan of yours. Your writing is excellent! However, your last book "The Other Woman" was good writing but, in my opinion, very dark material. It left me feeling somewhat depressed. I still look forward to your next book and I hope that the story is a little more up beat. I have always credited you for finding humor in the worst situations. Even though couples had done the most unthinkable things to one another, you gave them their comeuppance in creative ways not lingering on the negativity of the relationship but rather capturing human flaws and faults with comedy. That's what I really like about your writing and hope to see again in your future books. Thanks for another good read. Hope to see you again on your next trip to Waldens Virginia Center Commons.
Rating: Summary: it pays to be careful Review: this book was really a good one. Everyone should be very careful. This book just prooves that having sex with just anyone and someone you just meet is TROUBLE!
Rating: Summary: A Sizzling and Intimate Must-Read Book Review: I have read every novel by Eric Jerome Dickey and I am a huge fan of his work. "The Other Woman" was by far, one of the best books I've laid eyes upon (and that's an understatement). This book is written in first-person from a woman's perspective, and it really makes you feel that you are living "Freckles" life. Throughout this book, you think you know what's going to happen, but you really do not. It catches you off guard and will leave you with your mouth hanging wide-open!!! It is one of EJD's most intimate and capturing novels written yet! It is very easy to follow and makes you want to read it without putting it down until you are finished. I absolutely can't wait for the next novel!
Rating: Summary: Impossible to put down!!! Review: I read this in one day flat! One of the best books I have read in a long time. EJD gave me some things to think about. As most of the reviewers have said, this is definitely a reality book. How many times have you been in a relationship that seems to be working, with no problems, just to find out that the fairytale is over. I hope there is a sequel because "Freckles" has some issues to sort out after all of the drama settles down. There are questions that need to be answered and I can definitely see part II...............:>)
Rating: Summary: Complexity and passion Review: EJD has done it again. TOW is a real page turner, and I couldn't put it down. Full of passion, and complexity. A vivid depiction of real love..tragic and bittersweet. I laughed out loud and cried. EJD is a gifted writer and I thank him for blessing us again with his talent. I am counting the days until #8 hits the stands. XOXO
Rating: Summary: Somewhat Disappointed Review: While I am a big fan of EJD, I am again disappointed. Not that this was not a good book but Eric can and has done so much better in the past. The story line was very good . It has gotten hard for me to reccomend his work now to both of the bookclubs I am a member of. They are just not interested. I am one that continue to support his work. I guess he will always be one of my favorite authors but I have to be fair and say I expected more. I have all of Eric's novels and have read all but one of his books. While Theives Paradise did not appeal to me I bought it anyway to go in my tbr pile. I had very high hopes and thought this one would be a pageturner. The story was good but I felt he just drug it out to much. Once I got near the end of the story you could not drag me away . I just wonder what has happened to the Eric I know and enjoyed. Perhaps it's me I'll give this one 3.8 but not 4* . Eric , I agree Another Woman's Husband would have been the better title. Now I am very anxious to read what Shonda Cheeks has to say in her titled book. This was a good read just now one of your best. It might be hard to get your books when they first come out especially when I can not get the best discount price. Just to think I was to anxious to read this one. I am so grateful my daughter gave it to me as a Mother's Day gift. But I still luvya ! :)
Rating: Summary: Took my breath away.... Review: I must say that I am impressed. This was a wonderful work and combined with the fact that I will be meeting Mr. Dickey in two days, it makes it all the better. This book touched me so much that I finished it in one day. I felt "Freckles" pain... After reading the first few IM's between Jessica and Charles, I was aching with pain. Definitely a must read for all women. This is one of Mr. Dickey's better books...
