Rating: Summary: Excellant Review: What a well written, Excellant book. I am a former government employee, and my daughter is a federal agent. We both greatly identified with this book....
Rating: Summary: The Last Chapter is the Most Important!! Review: As a public information officer (PIO) working for a city police department I can tell you that I believe Ms. DeLong's last chapter--that talks specifically about personal safety information and tips--IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CHAPTERS IN THE BOOK!!The anonymous reviewer who claims to be writing from Butte, MT states that the last chapter is filler, I am wondering if that person missed the personal safety messages that are imparted in this chapter. I have heard DeLong speak on personal safety and find her speaking as well as her book,to be succinct, right on target, and very educational. In fact I bought a few extra copies of her book to give to friends to read because of the safety messages contained inside. I hope DeLong continues her plan to write a second book on personal safety as it would be an asset to readers who want to learn more about how to be safe and how to safeguard their family. AND the photo on the back of the book looked fine to me. What was the big deal!! I would have been more upset to see DeLong selling out and wearing a tight fitting dress busting out all over... the photo was both tastfully and professionally done. Axes to grind and personal vendettas have no place in book reviews. Carry on DeLong....we can't wait until your next book comes out!
Rating: Summary: A bit lacking Review: Maybe my hopes for this book were too high based on the other reviews I read, but I found it wanting. To be sure, Candice DeLong has a long and fascinating history in the FBI to draw from, but the book failed to live up to its potential. I suspect this might have much to do with the fact that it is ghostwritten. There's no clear voice in the book, I'm sorry to say, and it reads like what it basically is: dictation. Also, there was at least one (admittedly minor) obvious factual error in the book that indicated (to me, at least) that it was not as carefully edited as it could have been. Sounds like nitpicking, I know, but when I catch an error like that I have a hard time taking other facts at face value. Another problem is the book does not always follow a consistent timeline, and this can also be jarring to the reader. I wanted to enjoy this book more than I did, but the flat writing style, the lack of depth in certain places, and the fact that it just seemed like a bit of a rush job made it a much less satisfying read than it could have been. I wish instead of a survey of her 20 years in the FBI that she had focused on two or three incidents, or facets of her life in the Bureau, and gone into detail. In my opinion, that would have been a much more compelling read.
Rating: Summary: NO......SHE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING YET!!! Review: I WAS INTRIGUED TO READ A STORY WHICH PROMISED TO BE THE "REAL DEAL" ABOUT A CAREER IN FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT FROM A FEMALE PERSPECTIVE. YET, AS I READ I KEPT TELLING AN INTERESTED COMPANION...NO SHE HASN'T DONE ANYTHING YET...PAGE 100...PAGE 200...NO, SHE HASN'T REALLY DONE ANYTHING HERSELF YET. IT SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF PANDERING TO PERSONAL INTERESTS AND A LOT OF AMORAL ACTIVITY, WHICH ONE WOULD THINK SHE SHOULD BE LESS THAN PROUD OF...LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF FILLER (SEE THE LAST CHAPTER) AND BASICALLY, I WAS RUDELY DISAPPOINTED. I'M SURE THERE ARE SO MANY MORE SUCCESSFUL WOMEN WHO COULD HAVE ACTUALLY WRITTEN ABOUT CASES WHERE THEY ACTUALLY DID ALL OF THE WORK...NOT JUST HAPPEN TO BE AROUND AT THE TIME SOMEONE ELSE DID SOMETHING. I'M STILL WONDERING WHY ANYONE WHO PROBABLY MADE AT LEAST 100k WOULD STILL NEED TO MOONLIGHT FOR MONEY. THE PHOTOGRAPH WITH THE GUN ON THE VERSO IS REVOLTING. FORTUNATELY, THERE COULDN'T POSSIBLY BE A SEQUEL...BECAUSE NOTHING HAPPENED IN THE FIRST BOOK. I SHOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL IT WENT TO THE "BOOKS LESS THAN ..." TABLE.
Rating: Summary: Honored to work with You! Great read of a fine career! Review: After reading the review by "The Gameboy" Mr. Ward I feel compelled to offer my thoughts. Unlike the former suspect of the UNABOM investigation, I found the book to be a factual recollection of events as only someone who was a member of that tiny band of agents who can only recall that cold Montana morning. I found the book a great read, no myth , no fiction, just a tale of one womans struggle in an imperfect society and career. Candice set high standards for herself, her son and all who came her way. It was an honor to have served with her as a friend, and fellow agent, in the ghettos of Chicago where noone else would venture and in the deep snowy cold of Lincoln, Montana After my over thirty years of service in the F.B.I. comes to and end, I will always remember the wolfpack, and the stories of Christmas. Everyone will enjoy the truth within this book.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating & Inspirational Review: A good read. Everyone I've ever known in law enforcement always had great stories to tell, but Candice seems to have had a particularly good run. I was fortunate enough to have worked with her at the beginning of her career when she volunteered to work surveillances on the terrorist organization FALN. In a time when there were few females in the FBI, (or law enforcement), her femininity was an asset and her enthusiasm a delight. She not only volunteered her own time to work surveillances but recruited several other young agents, male and female, to participate in surveillances that required scores of people and were extremely sensitive. Her selflessness paid off when, by chance, she became the pivotal agent surveilling the main terrorist target in downtown pedestrian traffic and on public transportation. Her recounting of what she did to win at the "cat and mouse" game of surveillance is more than entertaining. Her stories have the insight of someone who's been there and should serve as encouragement to anyone who wants to pursue a career in law enforcement. Rick Hahn Special Agent - FBI - 32 yrs
Rating: Summary: Special Agent -Special Book Review: Special Agent is just one of those books you don't put down for long. Although not a prolific reader, I found myself looking forward to going home after work and reading this book. There's everything in here to make a great read; humor, suspense, drama, action, comradery, you name it, it's in there. If you've ever wondered about the lives that agents lead, pick this book up!
Rating: Summary: A great read on an interesting subject Review: This book was simply captivating, plus it reminded me how hard it was to be treated with respect in the early 80's as a working woman. Not that Special Agent DeLong whines about it at all - she merely states it like it was, and sometimes still is. The cases on which she worked were of such interest and variety that I couldn't put this book down. Even those with a passing interest in law enforcement would do well to read this book. Ms. DeLong is the kind of lady you'd like to have as a friend and a neighbor. She is a great example of a courageous single mom and working woman. This would be a great book for young women, late high school to college age, who are trying to figure out what they want to do professionally.
Rating: Summary: A Work of Fiction Review: If it wasn't for the fact that I was a subject of the UNABOM investigation for 20 years this book would be extremely humorous. Almost every fact about the UNABOM case in this book is materially wrong down to the room in which the Dungeons and Dragons group convened. Anything in regards to Ms. Delong's participation are outright lies. (She did manage to quote me correctly, however). Thus, I cannot believe anything else she writes. It is my understanding that Ms. Delong was almost fired from the FBI because she would clock in and then leave to work at another job. She was also described as a 'worthless agent' by one of the better agents I had dealt with over the years. Please keep your hard earned money and do not encourage self-aggrandizing garbage like this. In 20 years of being investigated I discovered that there are FBI agents who actually care about the truth - Ms. Delong is not one of them.
