Rating: Summary: good book on inner workings of FBI in a time of turmoil Review: Candice DeLong is the sister to one of my best friend's fathers, and the Rosing Family is extremely talented. My interest level in this book was high and I was glad I read it and will reccommend it to many people. It's great for women who can understand the inner workings of what goes on in sex offenders' minds, how to avoid danger and problematic situations. It was also nice to hear how this one FBI Agent was able to excel while the FBI is certainly facing difficult times from an image standpoint.
Rating: Summary: get the skinny on being a G-Woman! Review: A fine, funny & furious read! Elisa Petrini has taken Candice DeLong's loping life & made a memoir of a modern woman's career in one of the most entrenched Old Boys' Clubs ever founded upon these hallowed shores! It helped a lot that Candice DeLong had been a psychiatric nurse for years when she decided to up the ante & bring a little action into her life. Divorced with a son to care for, this single mother joined the FBI at a time when political correctness was merely a mote in God's eye. Get the skinny on John Wayne Gacy; the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit & John Douglas, the father of that discipline or Roy Hazelwood, the preeminent authority on sexual criminality; the Kemper case; agent-training programs at Hoover High, aka Quantico; a rookie's first days in the field; the Wonderful World Police; Utopia in LaGrange, Illinois; The Master Class; the Unsub & NCAVC; The Bad Guy that got just a bit too close & the Cocaine Cowboys who took everyone for a ride. Lend an ear to Girl Talk in which a brainstormer meets a "company man" & Ice Woman chills out Loverboy & the Candy Store caper sweetens the pot! Special Agent reads well - moving right along from case to case, from trainings to street work; from rapes to murders; terrorists to gangsters. From early days of divorce & gender-resistance to blossoming years of partnerships & reputation.
Rating: Summary: AN INSPIRATION AND ROLE MODEL FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE! Review: Candice Delong's experiences as head nurse in a maximum security psychiatric ward and, ultimately, as a member of the FBI have made this a top-notch book. For most of us, "The Silence of the Lambs" makes for an interesting read, but for Candice Delong the world is full of real-life "Hannibal Lecters", rapists, child molesters, serial killers and a wide assortment of other criminals. Needless to say, Candice has tread where many women would dare not go. Through the pages of this book, the reader will get a first hand experience of what it is actually like to walk in the shoes of one "who has been there and done that." From her experiences at Quantico to real life in an imperfect world, the reader is left with an overwhelming respect for this woman's inspiration, dauntless courage and endless determination to make the world a better place. As a former street counsellor who worked on the streets of a Canadian city, I can attest to the fact that one is forever watching over their shoulder. There is no shortage of con artists, rapists, child molesters and serial killers in society, no matter where one lives. They live in affluential homes and in the recesses of the darker corners of the world. Some criminals are the typical "nice guy next door" - the Ted Bundy's of the world; others prefer to blend in among the homeless where they feel less conspicuous. Candice Delong's account of life inside the FBI, particularly as a woman, is a real eye-opener. At the time she became a member of the FBI women had not been among the ranks for a very long time. This is a true-life story worth reading, deserving of a five star rating and highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: A very good book Review: Candice Delong wrote a great book, but more than that she is a great person. I enjoyed everything I read, her style was entertaining, and her accounts of her life in the FBI were thrilling. She made the FBI seem real and amazing. I would love to follow in her foot steps, become a FBI Agent and write a book that is as good as this one! P.S. Candice, I just want to say that your book is an inspiration to me. It would be my honour if you would email me someday.
Rating: Summary: Candice DeLong's Special Agent Review: This is the best book that I have ever read on the FBI or law enforcement, written by a woman who not only went beyond the call of duty but did it against both *friends* (a tradition of not hiring women agents) and foes. Aside from her courage, what most impresses me is her background as head Psychiatric Nurse in a major hospital before joining the FBI, which was subsequently put to good use in profiling rapists and similar violent criminals. This "profiling" technique uses statistics and interviews with offenders to obtain patterns of attacks and attackers - personality and lifestyle sketches of the typical psychopath (less effective with new criminals who simply *panic*)which are directed toward answering why particular victims are selected while others are not, why violence escalates over time for the psychopath, what kinds of public appeals may flush out the criminal or encourage him to communicate or confess, where the criminal is likely to surface, etc. The profiling technique was pioneered by psychiatrist James Brussel in the 1950s and introduced to the FBI by Howard Teten and Patrick Mullany in the early 1970s. Candice DeLong, who retired in July 2000, is a credit to Irish American Catholics and women and people with courage beyond the call of duty as well as mental health practitioners everywhere. I hope that women and mental health professionals and other scientists including statisticians will follow her example and consider a career in law enforcement, whether or not they believe in the sanity of politicians or in the sanity of bureaucrats.
Rating: Summary: An eye-opening look into federal law enforcement and gender Review: This book should be used in Criminal Justice classes, along with another revealing look at gender in law enforcement: U.S. Customs, Badge of Dishonor. Any female thinking of a career in law enforcement should read these two books! Both of these books would make great movies!
Rating: Summary: Adventures worth sharing Review: I found this book while browsing at Best Buy waiting for a friend to buy a washing machine. I didn't buy it then, but I kept going back to it in my mind and decided I had to read it. I'm glad I did. Although the writing itself is not particularly noteworthy, Ms. DeLong's career is worth reading about. Her knowledge of the criminal mind is extrordinary. It is sad that that there have to be people like Special Agent DeLong out there to catch the scum who victimize other people, but reading this book made me feel like there are people out there looking out for myself and those I love.
Rating: Summary: A brave lady Review: As a police officer in Hong Kong I have seen the female stereotype persist throughout the 1990s. Some of the incidents that Ms. DeLong went through are outrageous e.g. being sent to babysit an informant's kid while the rest of the squad went out on the bust. To her credit, although the way she was treated is a common thread running through the book, she is able to focus on the interesting stories that occurred during her career. I finished the book in a day - a great, informative read and you won't be able to put the book down. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: A must read for all Review: I am a Criminal Justice student, and I found this book very interesting, and a must read for all potential Criminal Justice Majors. If you like this book, I'd also recommend U.S. Customs, Badge of Dishonor!.
Rating: Summary: Very Informative Review: Every female police officer or potential police officer should read this book. Know what you're getting yourself into. Also read another excellant book on the subject, U.S. Customs, Badge of dishonor.
