Rating: Summary: This book should be your first read as a parent. Review: I saw Tracy on Dateline and rushed out to buy the book after seeing how she calmed the babies I knew immediately that this book was for me. I did all the things that Ms Hogg tells you not to do as parents do, at the time I knew this can't be right but how can you stop yourself as a new parent from rushing in no one tells you in the other books I read. They assume that all babies are the same my son Jake was 4 weeks premature and all he wanted to do was sleep I on the other hand thought his cries were for hunger and was determined to get him from his frail 4lb to 10lbs as soon as possible consequently he had colic. He is now 8 months and thanks to this book I have him on a structured routine sleeping through the night
Rating: Summary: No Substitute for common sense Review: Thank goodness for common sense. Every new parent should read this book. It not only stands out from the rest but Ms Hogg definately understands babies and her experiences are well documented. As a mother of 2 understanding your baby is the most important aspect of parenting, listening to them and showing respect can only lay the foundations for a respectful child. I like Ms Hogg's pro choice attitude on feeding even though she is recognised as one of the top lactation educators in the country, women today like myself who cannot breast feed due to cancer or surgery need to know that they should not be frowned upon. Ms Hogg has sound advice and a voice that should be heard Congratulations your sense of humor is a blessing in its self.
Rating: Summary: Best read by far Review: This is by far the best read of all the parenting books, I have read them all, while on bed rest for 3 months. I received the book as a shower gift from a girlfriend and I can honestly say it was the best gift I received. I gave birth 3 weeks ago and I use the book as my bible. It is full of common sense and cute acronyms that are easy to remember and work very effectively. When my baby first cried I was ready to rush in and pick her up with bottle in hand But remembered the S.L.O.W Stop Listen Observe then noticing What was the matter it made perfect sense to me. My baby like Ms Hogg suggests is an E.A.S.Y baby Eats Activity Sleeps on cue and I have plenty of You time. I have already sent 8 books out to my expectant friends and work collegues. Fantastic read and the CD is awesome my husband chuckles every time he plays it what a wonderful voice you have.
Rating: Summary: Congratulations !! Empowering book Thank you !! Review: Congratulations !! Ms Hogg on such an empowering book, which should be read by every parent, grandparent, childcare provider & everyone who interacts with infants. My wife and I have 3 sons and we drove 200 miles on friday to thank Ms Hogg in person for changing our lives. We were also pleasantly surprised that she took 2 hours out of her schedule to talk and answer everyones questions at her book signing, and even spent 5 minutes chatting to my wife and I. Not the Hollywood type. Ms Hogg was down to earth respectful and very witty. Well worth the drive. Our eldest son Dan Jr is 4yr and up to a week ago was sleepiing in our bed, a habit we have desperately tried to break on numerous occassions, with Ms Hoggs advice on accidental parenting we finally broke the habit and now sleeps 12 hours in his own room and bed. Justin 26 months would only go to bed when we did, and woke at least twice in the night, we put Ms Hogg's bedtime routine to work and her other tips on sleep, and he now is a much happier toddler even though he does still stir in the night we are able to comfort him more successfully and get him back down. Gray is our 9 week old dream baby after first reading the book 5 weeks ago we put him on the E.A.S.Y routine straight away we implemented the S.L.O.W method and what a transformation, I don't think our baby has cried in 3 weeks we can read all his cues like the book suggests and amazingly he is sleeping 10 hours at night and 5 to 6 hours in the day. This is the reason we felt the need to drive 200 miles I am sure any one who reads this book and embraces Ms Hogg's philosphy of the whole family approach, follows her flexible routines, picks up on her common sense tips and techniques will have a happier home. My heart goes out to those parents like us who have suffered the sleep deprivation for years, if other books offer easy to follow steps why are American families still sleep deprived. Ms Hogg has done a terrific job here and my family is living proof. My wife actually slept 10 hours herself for the first time in 4 years last week. Disregard the negative comments, parenting books are controvertial topics and no one said, one syle of parenting suits all read and embrace Ms Hogg's philosophy and decide for yourself. Thank you !! Thank you !! Dan and Dianne + 3 happy kids X X X X X
Rating: Summary: You're alright Luv! Review: I just finished reading this book and was reminded what an empowered, confident mother I became with the help, guidance and gentle touch of Tracy Hogg-oh yes, and don't forget the cup of tea!Tracy was in the room when my son was born and worked with my husband and me the first few weeks until we got the hang of things. My son had a terrible time latching on and Tracy was patient and really there for me. I was feeling like a complete failure, without Tracy I would have absolutely given up!I had read every single parenting and baby book before he was born and not one of them prepared me for how hard breastfeeding can really be.Not to mention all the other things that I hadn't been prepared for-baby blues, major sleep deprivation, etc. My son is three years old now,and I have to say I look back on those early months with such wonderful memories. With Tracy's help I was a calm and confident new mom,it was fun and exciting instead of overwhelming and exhausting. In this book is everything she taught me,I am so glad that it's now available, now everyone can have access to this wonderful, whispering woman!
Rating: Summary: A good "synopsis" of other books Review: I have found this book to be a cross between Babywise and What to Expect the First Year. The principles introduced are more detailed in other parenting books available so if you think Tracy's ideas are "novel" you will get more information from other sources. I had great expectations (and read the book from cover-to-cover) from all the media coverage Ms. Hogg received. When I finally finished I had a "not-so-satisfied" feeling. I found the book to be quite average.
Rating: Summary: KIDS TAKE L.A. ON THE BABY MANUAL EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT Review: In surveying numerous mothers in Los Angeles (and in New York) for our books, I was frequently hearing mothers rave about Tracy and her methods. I, of course had to get a copy of her book as soon as it came out and although there was certainly some information I didn't agree with such as some of the breastfeeding info, there was more than enough very interesting and helpful info in there to warrant a purchase. Have always as a mother believed that any info that can help save your sanity is truly a worthy investment! Rating: Summary: Borrow this one from the library Review: Did I skip a chapter? I have read several books on getting my baby to sleep through the night, & I'm still looking for the answer. I even had my mom stay with him for a week to comfort him through the nights (she really IS a baby whisperer) yet he still wakes up on schedule- 3 hours- for his feeding. After learning his cues, I know he's definetly hungry. I don't feel Tracy addressed the real issues that my friends and I have, instead, covered topics like nursing too long (an hour) or trying to put him down with loud music. Duh! She doesn't come right out and say it, but I believe she must let the babies cry it out as long as there obvious needs are met. To her credit, she was entertaining & had several ideas worth reading, such as her chapter on body language and cues. I loved her advice to treat your baby like a little human being. My son was already on her EASY schedule after reading 'Babywise'. Tracy, come to my house and see if you can whisper my son to sleep.
Rating: Summary: Theories without evidence Review: Hogg has a lot of theories about childcare and a lot of Hollywood celebs as clients. What she doesn't have is any good evidence to back up her claims. Some of it may be right, some of it may be wrong, but there is no way to tell from the book. This may be helpful to you and your baby but read it for what it is: the unvalidated opinions of one person based on anecdotal experience, not a proven success nor the insights of somebody with mystical insights into the minds of babies. (Incidentally, she also exaggerates her formal qualifications and experience).
Rating: Summary: A Sad Day When You Have To Read A Book To Connect Review: This book is hookey at best. This woman takes basic natural instincts that parents should feel and have for their babies and turns it into a business. She leaves her own children thousands of miles away to come to America to make money from the rich and famous and to sell her books. There is nothing of real value in Secrets of the Baby Whisperer that a parent can't find in their own heart and soul. This is just another book trying to give parents a quick fix for normal behavior in infants.
