Summary: Very helpful for a new mom
Review: This book helped me so much! By the time my daughter was 6 weeks old I knew things had to change. She wouldn't let us put her down and couldn't sleep without us, freaked out when we put her in a bassinette and forget the crib. She would nap only when 'attached' to her parents - either sleeping on a chest or lap - or grandpa's big belly. I had to go back to work and needed help. This book was the answer. The information it contains helped me understand that problem #1 was that baby was overtired and couldn't help but cry. Problem #2 was that her parents were enabling bad outcomes, by constantly holding her - that's all she knew and she liked it. Well, after reading and 2 difficult days and nights of putting her in her crib and picking her up each time she freaked out she finally got the idea and mom and dad got their hands free! She has slept in her crib ever since. I understand my daughter's crys better and realize when she is tired or over stimulated, etc. - I don't think I would have ever gotten it without this book. Now, of course there are some things she suggests that I've tweeked for my purposes, but Tracy's approach is very humane and the time I spend with my girl now is so much more pleasant and less stressed. I have to thank God for leading me to this book - it was an answer to prayer. We are enjoying raising a happy and healthy child, I really don't know what I would have done without this book!

Summary: Scary stuff for any attachment parenting family
Review: This book is a slap in the face to any full time care giver- my gosh I didn't know there were so many selfish parents out there. This book is all about not being there for you child, not practicing Attachment Parenting, and the don't do what is hard attitude is hoorible, (take the breastfeeding information). If you want a book read something by Dr. Sears... a father of multiple children, a peditrician, and realistic.

Summary: It helped me the second time around!
Review: Tracy Hogg has a gift for helping moms calm down and observe what their baby is really doing, rather than just trying some technique they've read or heard about from so-called experts.

She taught me to read my baby's body language, something I never realized was possible. I didn't have this book when my first was born, but I was so grateful it came out in time for my second! I was much calmer and I think both of us benefitted because of it.

If you like this book and trust my review, check out my book, "THE MOM-TO-MOM GUIDE TO THE BABY YEARS: REVIEWS, RATINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE TRENCHES." It gives real-world advice on everything from losing the pregnancy weight to getting dinner on the table fast (recipes included).

Summary: No details ( especially for helping baby sleep)!
Review: I read this book over and over, before my baby was born and many times over the first few months I was dealing with my colicky newborn. While the BW ( what we call her in our house)offers great general advice for taking care of babies you might as well chuck it aside of you are already in deep with sleep problems! I swear I followed all her advice!! But, it just does not offer details. Friends agree. I finally ditched my well worn copy at 6 months and solved my babies terrible sleep problems quickly with "Healthy sleep,...." .
A good read full of general advice, but won't solve sleep problems. Move on.

Summary: Some valuable information but...
Review: This book did contain some information that proved to be invaluable to me in trying to understand my little newborn so for me it was well worth the money I spent on it. However, Tracy's general method of how to train babies I find completely counter-intuitive. The book will advise parents to always have your newborn sleep in the same place (their own crib) and to always nurse in the same place. She proposes that this schedule will make life easier on the parents because you can then plan but who wants to plan your whole day around your babies nap and feeding times making sure to be home for all them - you would never be able to leave the house! Babies are actually quite portable and if you are nursing then they will feed quite happily wherever mommy is.

However, being inexperienced as I was this book did shine the light on some major mistakes I was making about reading my baby's cues especially when it came time to interpreting when she was tired and needed to sleep. She also reveals other golden tidbits of information I had not read or heard anywhere else...For instance, while all the experts talk about how long breast milk will keep in the freezer she points out that a mother's milk is constantly changing to meet the changing needs of her baby. So, although the milk is not spoiled it will not be exactly what the breast is currently manufacturing nor what the baby needs.

I do recommend the book but advise not to follow her plan to stringently. Take what is helpful and leave the rest.

Summary: Be Informed
Review: Be sure to read at least 20 reviews before you make a decision about this book. The first few are very positive reviews. However, if you take the time to read more you will find that the author's audience is EXTREMELY polarized. Some love the book and others hate it. Be informed.

Summary: This book saved our Sanity!!
Review: We are first-time parents and neither of us had ever taken care of an infant prior to our daughter being born. We had found and read a few books while I was pregnant, and it didn't seem as if it would be too difficult to take care of an infant. Well, needless to say, our daughter was colicky and we made huge mistakes early on and didn't realize it until we read this book. Now I have to say that when I read the first few chapters of this book, I found myself a little surprised. Most books that I had read up until this point recommended a very unstructured view on parenting and Tracy advocates structure and consistency. It was a little disconcerting at first, but I continued reading (thankfully). This book saved our sanity, within a few days of trying some of these techniques, there was improvement and within a few weeks, our daughter was on a sleeping and eating schedule and was alot less fussy. The book includes a listing of the basic causes for Colic, techniques to try, tables and charts to follow, problem solving techniques, etc. If you have a colicky/fussy baby that doesn't eat or sleep on a regular schedule or cries for apparently no reason (at least none you can figure out) then this might be the book for you, I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. I still wish I could afford to hire her to help me with my spirited child. :)

Summary: The London Nurse Knows her stuff
Review: I purchased the books "the Baby Whisperer" and "Babytales: A Pregnancy Companion" together and found both books to be wonderful and amazing... The london Nurse, who wrote "whisperer" Has a lot of affective advice for new mothers. She obviously has been around babies for many years. everything she spoke about worked for me. Highly rercommended as is "Babytales"

Summary: Highly recommended...best book out there!
Review: ... This book helped me to understand my baby (especially the crying part) and the emotional roller coaster that goes with being a new mom. Her techniques (which I combined a little with Baby Wise) helped me through the first 3 1/2 months of no sleep and nursing every 2 hours! It was very hard at first to let my baby cry when we started to put him on a routine. But I'm so glad that we did it for my on sanity. I love the fact that I know what's coming up next. I'm not sure if the routine is more for my son's benefit or mine. :)

Summary: To me, this book was useless. Read Babywise!!
Review: My son did not respond to this program at all. I will say I know of other babies who have, but even they are still not guarenteed nappers or full night sleepers. On Babywise, my son was sleeping 7 hours a night after the first three days and now, at 11 weeks, he is sleeping 10! As a first time mom, I relied heavily upon Babywise and it DID work. Our son is very healthy (95 percentile in all areas) and is definitely thriving....
