Rating: Summary: Read Iles previous books Review: As others have said, this is not the best Iles book. If you think this was good, wait until you read Black Cross and The Quiet Game__examples of a writer at the top of his game. Suspense and substance. Original, involving and thought-provoking work. When he is good, he is very very good.
Rating: Summary: FAST PACED EXCITING READ Review: I thought this book was fabulous! I read it within a couple days. I've never read Iles other books, but if they are better than this one, they must be great! I have a hard time understanding why others didn't like it.... You can really identify with the characters. Plus it was a suspenseful ride the whole way through. I found myself flying through the pages to find out what would happen next. It comes highly recommended (by me anyway)!!!!
Rating: Summary: a disappointing experiment Review: I have always enjoyed the books of Iles. They always combined adventuresome, yet believable stories with complex, human characters. Though 24 Hours is adventuresome, it lacks any of the complex characters to which I was accustomed in Mr. Iles' previous books. Instead the characters are stereotypical and general. The valiant mother fighting for her daughter's life. The mentally and physically abused young woman wanting to start a new life chapter. The dim-witted, oafish, yet good-hearted captor. The heinous bad guy who's just stupid enough to let his captive get the upper hand while his pants are around his ankles. These are all characters we've seen before. This book looks great in theory, but when I actually read it, I really felt as though I was cheated. This would probably make a great movie, but the book sure is lacking. Give us another Quiet Game or Black Cross!
Rating: Summary: GREAT book - took me by surprise! Review: WOW! While browsing at Barnes and Noble, I read the book jacket and was intrigued. After reading some of the mediocre reviews on this site, I took my time purchasing the book. Took it home and - WOW again! I opened it up and after the first few chapters I was hooked and in the boat. Premise: 24 hour ingenious kidnapping plot This is a suspensful, roller coaster ride! There are 3 different characters (Mom, Dad and little daughter), in different places, encountering different dangers and Greg Iles manages to keep you on your seat through EACH sub-plot. This book is refreshingly unpredictable, has a really perverted, sicko villain, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. What more could you ask for??? You WILL stay up until it is finished. Tomorrow it's back to the bookstore for another Iles book. Did I say WOW?
Rating: Summary: 24 Hours Review: Absolutely awesome! I finished this book in three days because I absolutely couldn't put it down. Iles makes the villain easy to hate, and there are twists and turns on every page. The title itself lets you know that it is going to be a fast-paced thriller. This is the first book I've read by Iles, and I plan to read his other works ASAP. Absolutely a must read!
Rating: Summary: Edge-of-your-seat, page-turning suspense at it's best Review: Greg Iles has scored yet again! This is a name to remember if you're not familiar with his work. His books have all been extremely well-written - and he doesn't write the same story again and again. Black Cross, Mortal Fear and Quiet Game are all wonderful reading, but very diverse. This is an author that I hope will be around for a long time. Once you start an Iles story, you cannot put it down!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable, but not nearly his best Review: "The Quiet Game" raised the bar so high for this Natchez, Mississippi author that almost anything else would seem a letdown. Unfortunately, "24 Hours" is a big drop. The systematic kidnapping of the doctor's daughter (perpetrated by a very well-prepared and experienced felon) makes for fairly compelling reading, but the yuppy-couple-living-in-a-huge-house-in-rural-Mississippi backdrop is beginning to wear a bit thin. Iles' writing is still strong, as he creates real heartache for any parent who can imagine his/her child (especially one with an illness) being snatched away. But "24 Hours" veers to close to Grisham territory in Will Jennings' race against time to save his wife and daughter (the F.B.I. portrayed as arrogant buffoons comes off a trifle smug) and the climactic plane landing on the highway scene is a wee bit too Hollywood for this reader. This is an enjoyable book, but it strikes me as perhaps rushed into print. You might be inclined to agree if you read this one, then try "The Quiet Game" and "Mortal Fear."
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down ........... Review: We are fans of Greg Iles and this is one of his best efforts. What a great Sunday I had just reading and reading. Such suspense and when the pace quickened at the end, I almost read TOO fast ! Don't get too far into it, unless you can finish it.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Page Turner Review: When I first began the book it was a little slow for me at first. I set the book aside for a week or two, but when I had nothing to do, I began where I left off. From there on I couldn't put it down. At certain times I didn't want to finish it. You feel like you know the characters SO well. I strongly advise that you read this book!! I am currently looking for another book by Iles and hope it is just as great.
Rating: Summary: Spectacular Review: This book is fantastic!!
