Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I had read Susan Powter's books about weight loss and felt that she was often right on in her approach, so I expected this in her book about alcoholism.I was disappointed about her stance on alcoholism. I can't agree that a mother will drive drunk with her child in the car because the addiction is stronger than her ability to parent. A parent who puts their child at risk is someone who isn't suitable as a parent, regardless of what reasons they would like to tell themselves for why it's OK to drink. I agree with Susan that alcoholism is a disease, but the book seems to be a long, drawn out story of excuses to be an alcoholic. I am sorry that Susan Powter jumped from one addiction (food) to another (alcohol).
Rating: Summary: Sober and staying that way Review: I have never been a fan of Susan Powter because I found her too abrasive, but now I see clearly! This book is RIGHT ON! She is picking up where Bill W. left off at the time of his death. She examines the taboo avenues of the EtOH industry and really hits the mark. If current recovery dogma isn't getting through to you, BUY THIS BOOK (or audiotape) Brava, Susan, you're helping me save my Life.
Rating: Summary: It's good...Even for men Review: I know this may sound weird in light of the fact that Powter has been labeled fem-nazi and the like, but she has a new male convert in me due to the Sober and Staying That Way. It completely changed my view of her. I read the book non-stop from front to back. I immediately identified with the sugar/caffeine cravings whenever I tried to stop drinking. I knew/know from personal experience that eating/being healthy really helps me not drink. And I readily identified with her observations about current recovery programs. I was in some shock over the connections she makes between the government and big business, but that was naive on my part. This book really simulated a response from me on many levels. It may have saved my life and possibly my marriage.
Rating: Summary: What an impact! Review: I put this book in my alcoholic husband's hands and expected a miracle! And he has stopped drinking and is eating healthier food than ever before. It has changed our habits dramatically. Ignorance of how alcohol affects the body can only cause problems; everyone must read this book and become more aware.
Rating: Summary: She's smart & funny and offers a lot of good advice Review: I read it cover to cover in one sitting and then passed it on to the person I had purchased it for. Then I bought another copy for someone else. I'm just trying to understand this desease and the size of this beast, and the horrible things it's done to people I care about. She got me a long ways toward that understanding. Fault it any way you want, by and large it was a good read, good life skills, good common sense. It was a good kick in the [rear] and I hope everyone I share it with gets as much out of it as I did. It may not be the only answer, but she moves you forward in the right direction, and hopefully healthier and better able to tackle this monster.
Rating: Summary: It open my eyes to my denial and has inspired me to learn mr Review: I recomened this book if you are not sure what is your problem is, but feel it could be drinking or if you know what the problem is and are having trouble facing it. A very good book.
Rating: Summary: I think this is the best and most helpful book I've ever rea Review: I saw this book in the library on Friday, went to the bookstoreimmediately afterwards to purchase it, after reading 43 pages in thelibrary, and I truly think it is the best book I've ever read. It has helped me get through the weekend. I am almost done reading it and I advise anyone with the same problem,to read this book. I cannot say enough great things about it. M. Logan END
Rating: Summary: At last - some real answers! Review: I thank God I found Susan Powter's book. For the first time I have a better understanding of those in my family and church with the illness of alcoholism. Our family has struggled to understand and now we have a different view, and a concrete way we can help, instead of looking on helplessly. Yes, we pray, and this book is one of the answers. Thank you, Susan, for your honesty and research. We ALL need to look at what white sugar and flour are doing to our bodies! Rev. Judy Oak
Rating: Summary: well worth reading - a must Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it very educational. I consider the book a stepping stone for greater awareness. I am also going to purchase some of the other books that Susan recommended. Knowledge is power and the more we know about this disease the greater the chance of staying sober now and in the future. After reading Susan's book, I definetly believe that there is a link between sobriety and the foods/vitamins that we eat.
Rating: Summary: Saved My Life Review: I was drinking twelve beers a day, at least. Had been for a couple of years. There are many bad times I could tell you about, but I'll just share the last one. One night I was charged with being drunk and disorderly, handcuffed and kept in the back of a police car in the Department's garage for about an hour. That was it. No more able to deny I had a problem and scared to death that I would not ever be able to stop, I found Susan's book. I remembered her name from her previous book about dieting. I read it cover to cover. Some of it hurt but all of it was true. I've been sober for 3 1/2 years now and am eternally grateful to Susan and her courage and willingness to pass on to me the power to stop. I believe her book saved me.
