Rating: Summary: Great fun, destined to be a new Christmas classic! Review: Christmas won't be the same this year for the Krank family. With their daughter Blair gone with the Peace Corp, it just seems pointless. So Luther and Nora decide to skip Christmas, just for one year. No parties, not presents, and not a single Christmas card will be sent out. Instead, a cruise to the Caribbean is on the plans. In "Skipping Christmas", Grisham once again leaves his main genre and takes us through the Krank's life leading up to not celebrating Christmas. But when the unexpected happens, the Kranks are forced to celebrate Christmas and learn some things in the process. From diets, to some-what nosey and concerned neighbors, this is a delightful, fun book. I gave it four stars because I felt it could have more substance. It reads like a quick paced time line, with little detail and doesn't take but a day to get through. But don't let that fool you, it is a charming little book that I'm sure will be around for Christmases to come. Good job Grisham!
Rating: Summary: great! Review: With his newer books, John Grisham seems to be revealing more of himself. Granted he's still writing fiction, but somehow you feel that he's sharing more of his thoughts as he goes through different phases in his life. I love this book because it is feel-good, and the characters are so vividly described that I had to keep pausing throughout the book to imagine what each neighbor is like. The book is also funny, and it's an easy read. It's a great Christmas gift. I'm eagerly awaiting Grisham's next book.
Rating: Summary: A NEW TWIST FOR JOHN GRISHAM! Review: For those who are die-hard followers of the traditional picturesque Christmas complete with the chestnuts roasting on the open fire, Yuletide carols, presents beneath the dazzling lights of a tree, and a credit card bill longer than Santa's list, you may get a real jolt out of Grisham's book. Not only that, you will get a ton of laughs from start to finish. Did you ever think about just getting away from it all and let Santa go on vacation? Grisham did. The main characters in this book, Luther Krank amd his wife, Nora, have decided to spend Christmas as many would truly like to do but do not have the heart or guts to try. After all, what would the rest of the family and the neighbours think if we really decided not to do Christmas this year? Grisham makes Christmas as entertaining as he does law, and readers will not be disappointed with this seldom seen side of John Grisham. Krank is grumpy, he's witty, he's creative and he's your typical modern-day Uncle Scrooge. What a fantastic gift this book would make for those who are still up to the gift-giving traditional Christmas. The book is worth a "five star plus" rating and highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: I read this book in about two hours and I loved it. It was endearing and funny. I laughed out loud something I haven't done with a book in a long time. The best part about it was that you could imagine the whole thing actually happening. Great book highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Grisham Lite Review: A charming little book, humor and irony intact. Won't take long to read but enjoyable. Definitely Grisham-Lite. This is an escape book - - don't plan to think very hard.
Rating: Summary: don't skip this book Review: This book was a very fast read at only 177 pages, but the things that go on in those 177 pages are funny and touching. For all of us who hate the hustle and bustle of the holidays this a book that we can relate to.

Rating: Summary: Modern "Gift of the Magi" holiday treat Review: John Grisham exits nicely from the world of lawyers, courtrooms, and sleeze and takes us into a world all of us would recognize: What would happen if we passed on Christmas this year? Protagonist Luther Krank (okay, the name is a bit to revealing), an accountant who knows the cost of Christmas but not its value, calculates an alternative to Christmas parties, unwanted gifts, illuminated Frosty's, and more. Why not simply say "no" to Christmas? "No" to the neighbors decorating their homes, to the Boy Scouts selling trees, to the policeman selling calendars, to medics selling fruitcakes...just say "no" to everyone and everything concerning Christmas. Take all that money you spend on mindless cards, trinkets, and parties and spend it on something half the cost and much less stressful, like a cruise. Perhaps the only sentiment stronger than the tempatation to pass on the anxiety, crass commercialism, drunken office parties and competitive neighborhood decorations must be the nostalgia we all have for Bing Crosby White Christmas past. The Kranks fight hard to stay the course. A slim, fast read, it would be a shame to deter the prospective reader by revealing the plot twist but it is transparent and predictable. But it's also fun, and heartwarming. A nice Christmas gift.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding short novel Review: I purchased this book the day that it was released - and finished it the same day. It's an unusual book for Grisham, much as his last novel, A Painted House. This light-hearted tale of a couple who decide to skip Christmas for a year makes for a great read. Their misadventures will keep you riveted to the book.
